WARNING: Vive flow is an incomplete unsupported and unmaintained project. Incomplete because it has bugs and lacks apps. Unsupported because most websites are build for Oculus, and not for Vive, and it misses codecs to play most videos. Unmaintained, because their forums are empty, nobody responds to questions, and software patches for security fixes aren't released. You'll find many online tutorials that are broken, links that don't work.

Thanks for covering this device, this is how I imagine VR in the future ! Lightweight goggles but connected with a PC instead of the phone, wirelessly via ultra fast Wifi to play with no compression and full body tracking without the need of controllers. C'mon let me dream ! 😭
@Thezuule1
@Thezuule1 2 жыл бұрын
One more step, in the future the headset will likely be 5G or 6G wireless through the cell network and it will just stream from the cloud. We'll never be able to pack the same level of processing into a mobile device that we can into a server so the only real solution is to pipe the data to the headset. This is the only way AR is ever going to be decent as well given the even more tight restrictions on weight and size people expect from glasses.

I actually really like the idea of this for consuming media. A lightweight, easy to put on device for watching movies and streaming things like netflix. I do wish it came with its own 3DOF controller similar to Go, as the biggest detractor for me (aside from price, but i would almost be willing to pay it) is the lack of a 3DOF controller. I understand wanting to utilize technology most people carry with them anyways, but I have really enjoyed my Google phones and it seems Pixel line does not support Miracast (instead using chromecast), so it seems for now you cannot use a Google phone with the vive flow.

To be honest, I really dont get why anyone would buy this over the Quest 2? It makes too little sense. I would see this as a nice product if they actually made something more similar to the Oculus Go, with everything required built into the headset. External battery pack, smartphone controller, I mean, its just bizarre. Its targeted at such a niche market that I honestly doubt even exist.

The singular ergonomic drawback (for a device clearly meant to be portable and comfortable and light) I see is what to do with the external battery. I guess most people will have it in their lap or pocket with a long cable, but... idk just seems to detract from the otherwise free and light experience. On the other hand idk how they would solve this. I also think they should have added a keychain-like loop at the ends of the arms for a cable or strap to secure it and prevent it from falling down.

That dialer is actually amazing.... Now, this isnt something id personally go out and get, but I think that my parents would absolutely love it. They dont play games, they have no interest, really. They like simple, to the point devices. My dad uses my quest 2 and i hop into bigscreen on my index and we watch 3d movies together. Stuff like that, they're into. So this, with the dialer to match their glasses prescription, their phone to keep things simple and some movies that we can watch together with my siblings who live elsewhere, especially with them not really wanting to go to theaters anymore, could really be a big selling point. I wonder if they're really pushing for that demographic?

I own the quest 2 and I use it everyday but I’ve played games on it maybe a handful of times, I use it mainly to stream media and search the web. I will be giving the quest 2 to my nephew once I get my hands on the flow.

What a let down. I am sure most busy mum's would rather buy a bottle of wine than a $499 headset! Seriously though, what busy mums and busy people need is time. When my wife asks me what I want for Christmas or my birthday, my first reply is time. For me, VR is luxury time which I can only afford when everything else is done. I had a serious burnout a few years ago and the best medication is sleep, exercise, daylight and fresh air. It took me six months to drag myself off the sofa, so the last thing I needed was something to keep me there. I think they have been developing this for a long time, with best intentions, but have been floored by the Quest. I think they had to get this out to recover some loses and some feedback. The design is nice, the size is nice, the diopter adjustment is great, but the tech is old. $499 No battery? No controllers..... no thanks. All the best, Rich in Sweden.

It looks like decent tech, but it's applications don't really seem to fit in anywhere I was hoping for (mainly the phone being the controller) it just doesn't seem worth it as it is right now.

I like the simplicity of the design but this is not selling to a big market. I’m interested to see other companies try similar products in the next few years that have better functionality like quest 2 or better

They are marketing it as a meditation device and nobody pays $500 for meditation. They need to sell this as a Netflix device and video streaming with updated apps I highly doubt they can.

Ugh... I've been a longtime fan of HTC industrial design. They often have some really innovative and useful features, but they rarely ever put those things together in a way that anyone actually wants. I just can't imagine anyone choosing this over a product that can... you know, do all this plus play real games. Often for less money.

Looking forward to the time when high end HMD are that small and lightweight. But with those specs the Vive Flow is of no interest to me. Especially not at that price.

The lightweight is great, the look is great, external battery understandable, no controller support for 6DOF is a show stopper for me. That plus no mention for VR Desktop support or steam ala cable support to my PC, its hard to justify the reason to purchase the flow for me at this point. If it can link up to sidequest, that may sway me a bit more into the consideration of this headset. Unfortunately the flow to me has an identity crisis, it just doesn't do any one thing better than what is available or upcoming within the next 12 months. The price was not the issue here, they watered down all the functionality yet didnt do any one thing great besides watching movies which still, would be easier and cheaper with the quest 2. Disappointed and hurt when HTC Vive team were the pioneers of VR headsets, this is so painful to watch. I've been rooting for you Vive team but you simply let us down with this one. It's not 2017 anymore. Focus on the Focus and open that up for gaming, then Id gladly let you take my money.

Even in cases where there might be a way to sideload stuff you're stuck with an XR1 chip so you're stuck running OG Quest level stuff I would think.

I guess you could say nice try, but this won’t sell! With the Quest 2, 2 plus, 3 and whatever other headset comes out, this has no chance. They really didn’t think this out! Who were they marketing too? Great video though!
