To provide a little more detail on Hua. His parents divorced when he was two and he lived with his father, who was an executive who not only worked long hours but was often away on business trips. His father would not speak a word of praise or affection to him the entire time he was growing up. When I say "not a word" I mean not a single word of affection ever. He handed him off to nannies to raise and they only communicated when his father checked his grades or asked him if needed anything. Even harder, his father remarried and had a daughter that he doted on even while continuing to ignore Hua. Growing up under such deprivation Hua became anti-social, angry and depressed. He wanted love from someone, anyone but for a long time despaired of ever receiving it and distanced himself from others to prevent them from rejecting him like he felt his parents had. It was only music, creating his own melodies and lyric-less songs for hours and days on end, that enabled him to cope. Hua found it painful to prepare for the performance because the memories of those darker times kept coming back. The producers did not want him to perform the song. Hua himself thought there was a real chance that the audience would not accept it but he wanted to share his struggle in hopes that people might reach out to others who were in need. At the end of the episode, Hua's performance took second place. There is a happy ending to this. His father opened up once when Hua was a teen to admit that he ignored him so that Hua would make his decisions for his life completely on his own, without worrying about what anyone else thought. When Hua came to fame as part of the Superboy competition his father appeared on an episode to support Hua. He admitted all of what I've written but said that he now wanted everyone to know that Hua was his pride. Hua said that hearing those words were far more important than winning the competition. He dedicated that night's performance of "I Will Always Love You" to his father, ending it with "Papa, I love you."

I could by cynical but will withhold what I really think in regards to his childhood. Trying to keep a positive comment for Hua who has become a lovely swan so to speak. God is taking care of him. Wish his success continues as he wishes. It's such a blessing to see such talent be shared with the public. Hope he feels real genuine love from his Martians. His mentoring and interactions with competitors on all the shows he's in just shows what a warm kind giving heart he has. On one of the travel shows, he strays off and sees someone playing some instrument in a secluded place. He stopped and sat down to listen to him. He had tears in eyes. Made me tear up too. Just goes to show how music draws him away from what's going on around him.

Hua's Fake Monk reminds me of this quote by Nietzsche: "He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee." Fun fact, Fake Monk is actually one of the rare performances that are closer to Hua's true style when he composes in private for himself. As he doesn't write lyrics, he makes Lyric-less Songs and he says that some can be so dark and crazed that he doesn't find it suitable to share them. No one had ever presented such an experimental piece on the stage of Singer before, since ppl usually play safe. But Hua being Hua, he stuck to his own ideals and did this gutsy move, even saying that he was totally prepared to be last for the episode. Thankfully, the tastes of the audience seem to have grown and he was 2nd.

Hua Chenyu doesn't really care much about lyrics. He auditioned for Super Boy with a lyric-less song. And check out his "Cancer". He said what is important is the feeling. Whatever and however you felt, that's the message of the song.
