As soon as I heard Huanan was making a dual-socket version of their x79 motherboard, I knew I had to get one. Six weeks later, what exactly did I get myself in to?
So, is this Chinese motherboard worth getting?
But first... What am I drinking???
Full Sail (Hood River, OR) Harrington's Bourbon Barrel Aged R3D Ale (2017). As the name implies, this is a bourbon-aged Red. And honestly, I was expecting a little more from this one. Very malty up front, but then the flavor just kind of flattens out and fades into a very boozy finish. This one was just kind of 'meh' for me. 10.3%

I felt like I was gambling when I thought about buying one of these chinese motherboards (not this exact model, but the other x79 you reviewed; the e5 3.5b.) to couple with a E5-2640 without OC, but thanks to you I feel safe in buying it. I want to tell you, I am so grateful with your work, the only reviews that this type of motherboards have are russians and I don't understand a single think about what they say because... surprise! I don't speak russian lol. I live in Uruguay (SouthAmerica) and It's not a bad country, in socio-economic matters we are one of the best country in Latin America but the prices of electronics are really high thanks to customs taxes, and as an avid dealer hunter, I'm always searching for the best quality-price in the market, thing that It's easier with your great work. Anyway, you're doing an incredible job with all your reviews and I just wanted to tell you that. Keep going! Amazing video is this, as always, and greetings from Uruguay, Jeff! Muchas gracias, genio!

2640 is very cheap, 1620 v1 and 1650 v1 (both unlocked) are another alternative but the are already 130w so it need to spend in a good cooler. DDr3 ecc is cheap too. Im in a dilema if i choose a setup like yours or a ryzen 1600 with a a320 board and 1 stick of ram. @@CraftComputing Even this? ;D Excellent video as always! You got me wondering why the company doesn't improve the BIOS just a bit given some of the things you mentioned, but is it possible they can't really change the BIOS? The lack of fan control is peculiar, and it's a shame about the UEFI issues. I can understand the lack of any oc'ing at all on the board though, that VRM doesn't look like it could handle anything out of spec. One thing, presumably with the E5 v1 installed the PCIe slots run at 2.0; do you know if they would therefore run at 3.0 with an E5 v2 installed? Should do in theory, just a pity the v2s are so much more expensive ( and if only one could get the ASUS WS boards for a decent price). I was also wondering whether the system would let you use one of the x16 slots for something like a 950 Pro (or equivalent Intel), ie. NVMe SSDs that have their own boot ROM and can thus be used as a C-drive. Re the inverted box, I've seen that before with UK refurb dealers, eg. they'll ship out Gigabyte mbds with the original box inverted as they're one of the few that have a plain white inner surface. Was a nice surpise when I bought an X58 UD3R to discover it had come with its original box. Btw, almost 70K subs, woohoo! 8)

@CraftComputing 5 жыл бұрын
Even this ;-) And I agree about the BIOS. That's really the thing holding these boards back from being sooooo much better. The last couple boards I had did not support booting from PCIe devices (I tried with a couple RAID cards, same theory as NVMe BootROMs). Nope on PCIe. While the PCIe controller is on the CPU, the version is still determined by the motherboard. Installing a v2 chip would run the ports as PCIe 2.0 ports. Thanks for watching!

About the PCI-E 2.0/3.0 question, i had a 3930k on a MSI X79A-GD65 wich by default ran all the PCI-E slots at 2.0 but with some fix i found on the web it would run the slots at 3.0 speeds. I wonder if that fix was X79 specific or if it would work on a C602 board as well? (PS, awesome video! Love your channel!)
@mapesdhs597
@mapesdhs597 5 жыл бұрын
@@CraftComputing Makes me wonder whether there's something about the Megatrends BIOS usage that means they can't modify it much, or at all. Mattias, the fix you're referring to is no doubt the tool NVIDIA released which forces the link to 3.0. Still not entirely sure what that tool is doing given Intel's specs do say the official speed for the 3930K is 2.0. Most odd. I talked to a few people though who said they'd encountere stability issues when forcing the slots to 3.0, so I put them back to 2.0 (didn't matter, was only using a single GTX 980) until I finally upgraded to a 4930K which of course makes them 3.0 anyway.

I bought myself 3 x x79 2.49 HUANANZHI motherboards. The green ones. They've worked pretty good. Two of the boards are being used as vm servers and the third as my desktop running with a gigabyte RX580 8GB. Performance wise with games at 1440p running with a e5 2630 v1. They get pretty close to what most benchmarks on the rx580 8gb get on KZbin. I am glad you did this review on this board. I had been eyeing it out on AliExpress for quite a few months. I think you have helped put my mind to rest and will wait for the next revision of this board. I contacted Wuson store on AliExpress(official reseller for HUANANZHI) and he mentioned that the next revision will have more ram slots, pcie slots as well as a nvme port built into the board. Though an eta on this revision is completely unknown. Hopefully they will have also resolved the quirks that you have found running this board.

Awesome, been waiting for this video, will update my comment once I've finished watching :) Edit: Minus the buggy EFI issues this motherboard seems like great overall value for someone who needs lots of Cores for VMs and does light gaming occasionally but is GPU limited (Triple 1080p, currently using a GTX1060), the fact it's a genuine C602 chipset is really surprising, I am now heavily considering getting one of these and two E5 V2 processors to keep me ticking over for a year or two, I'll just wait to see where gaming performance is at (I'm not expecting much but as I've recently been running my Dual 95W X5650s at 65W with a custom BIOS mod at stock speeds anything is a welcome boost in performance) Thanks for reviewing this motherboard, and for going over all the details :)

Appreciate the video; am running a Huanan Zhi x79 Deluxe with 32GB ECC Registered ram...for about 6 weeks now; no issues with configuration or booting. Did have early probs with it not going to sleep....hibernation was good, just wouldn't sleep. As you're probably aware, they ship these with no CMOS battery...so all settings are default and it needs to be properly configured. Once I worked that out...enabled S1 & S3 sleep modes...and problem solved. Am very happy with the purchase and results...however there is absolutely no support available...online or email....NOTHING! But still...excellent value and I will be buying again, in fact ordered another motherboard last night....this time a PlexHD x79; has more PCI-E slots than the Huanan Zhi, and claims to support SLI...maybe you should look at it too. I'm only planning to run an E5-2680 v2 in mine with 64 GB this time. So was it worth it? YEP!! BUT....I do so wish you would lessen the 'Bass' impact on your backing tracks...really - almost overpowering 'Boom Boom' shit is all I can relate it to...

As for the $200 dual LGA 2011 boards - right now on Newegg you can find the Gigabyte GA-7PESH2 for $199.99 before the tax with free shipping. I ordered two of them, one was DOA but they agreed to replace it, and the one that works - that is a BEAST! Installed 16 DIMMs of 16GB each and got a 256GB memory. It has LSI 2008 SAS controller on board - so you can connect up to 14 HDDs without external controllers (but you will need a splitter cable and 4 of them are 3Gb/s ports, rest are 6Gb/s). If you have EATX capable cases - i highly recommend this board.

The bad news is that you can't install windows until you download the RAID drivers and side load them during install because the Windows installer won't recognize the RAID controller, even in non RAID mode. And among the drivers on Dells site, there are a bunch of drivers and you just have to try them till you find the right one.

You can get up to 12c/24t with the E5-2697v2 (but still pricey), and if you want a bit more core speed, go with the E5-2667v2, 8c/16t, 4.0GHz single core turbo, 3.6GHz all-core turbo. The best thing about using these CPUs is being able to use DDR3 registered ECC memory, which is crazy cheap. I built a dual 2680v2 setup for a home server running FreeNAS, Plex, OpenVPN, and PiHole. I’ve built 2 more servers around the 2680v2, 2690v1, and 2697v2 for SETI@home Systems, and even convinced a friend to go with a dual 2667v2 setup for his Plex server and streambox.

Sebastiano Pagani I used a chinese motherboard once but didn’t really have a great experience. It “worked” fine more or less but the turbo speeds didn’t work correctly. And it seems to have died in a few months. But this was several years ago and not the same brand used in the video. I prefer Supermicro boards though. They are much better quality.

Ok, So I bought the Huananzhi x79(lol, really an c606 chipset, as I guess i said) dual cpu and put 2637v2's into it and it runs like an champ I will say. Everything works except you can only use 6 of the 8 dimms onboard. The bios was from april 2019, and the m.2 slot works a charm, with 4x16gb ecc samsungs, an rx 5700xt 8gig, sabrent rocket q m.2 3100reads/2600writes, not overclockable at all, as well, only 6dimms are possible to install(not 8 like it says) Dual Intel fans(I had to sand down one side to get them to fit), USB 3.0 is non usable(crashes constantly)with and OLD old VIA usb chipset. Thank you for the video, I wanted to see if these boards were viable still as well, and thank you for the video. Dude, love your channel, always have great comment, cheers. Oh yea my cinebench was 2622pts with dual 2637v2s'.

Just got the Jingsha version of this board which supports M2 NVME and 256GB with 8 memory slots. I am using it for a home virtualization lab so my need was max cores and memory. I had pulled a 1TB NVME stick from another system that had Windows 10 running and after putting together this system it booted up first time and Windows 10 recognized the new CPUs with 24 Cores and 48 Threads with 256GB of RAM. Decided to use E5-2651 V2s to minimize power consumption as they only require 105W. Onto ESX - did not install initially as this board has Realtek NICs - built a custom ESX installation ISO with the Realtek vib installed and worked like a charm. Running the latest build of ESX. The only downside for me is no fan control - plan to get Noctua low noise adaptor cable to slow down the fans.

B4 is indeed USB related, and it seems to be a firmware bug with those chipsets. I have a similar issue with my Supermicro X9DRE-TF+ where W10 will occasionally freeze during a soft reboot. A hard power cycle usually clears it up. BIOS updates are supposed to resolve it, but not all boards have been patched.

When you can get an almost a whole package (without the case, PSU and drives) for about 1200NZD it makes for a very compelling system. I'm glad to see you posting a review. I just ordered a couple of component sets for Linux workstations. Threads and memory are the key for VMs. They were $500+ for Ryzen CPU , mobo and memory. Minimum GPU needed. For real VM work, we repurpose old Supermicro dual-Xeon servers with 24 cores/48 threads and 72GB of ECC RAM. The "dual X79" approach would let me deliver server-class vitualization on every desktop. Hopefully you will benchmark KVM or an equivalent tech in the next video. Thanks for doing this! Subscribed.

Currently running a dual X5675 rig I upgraded from a stock Dell T7500. Added some cool stuff like USB 3 (through a PCIe card) and also a good wifi card. Getting ~1450 cb on R15. That's basically just above a stock Ryzen 7 1700. Sure, power consumption is a good deal more, but the whole thing costed me $250 max. Limited to SATA II and also not great single core performance isn't awesome, but overall, this thing is maxed out performance per dollar-wise. At 1440p, bottlenecks on my RX 480 are very minimal, I basically never dip below 90% CPU usage. But for games that are REALLY bad and pretty much use a single core, it can get pretty bad, as low as 60-70 usage. It depends what you're playing and what your expectations are. Other than that, I'd do it all over again 100x over! And when Sandy/Ivy start getting even cheaper, I may go at it again!

At about the 10 minute mark, you mention the board supports VT-x, which you describe as “pass through”. This may be a gaffe, but to explain to those who may get confused: Virtualization passthrough is VT-d. This allows devices to be handled by other virtual machines, rather than the host OS. The most common use is GPU passthrough via VFIO. VT-x is a compatibility technology for virtualization, allowing multiple operating systems to run on the same hardware, and enforce better CPU and RAM management. Great video btw :)

Making UEFI USB bootable on this system is a little bit tricky. You need to first enable the UEFI for storage controllers and boot options set to UEFI and Legacy, then reset with the USB stick in the port, then in the BIOS you need to go into the HDD boot priority and move the USB stick up the list - then you will be able to select the UEFI bootloader from the list.

( Pcie card required ) * Faster Mgz Ram speed ( 1600 up from 1333 ) * Updated Bios So a new MB, a new case ( which I already have ) and some new ram are all I have to purchase, Which can all be bought inexpensive on the used market. This will Squeeze another 2 - 4 years out of my currant aging system with only native usb 2.0 and Sata 2 and no bios support fro Nvme. And be a fun little project. ** Thank You Craft Computing so much for the Great Video !!!!! U just saved me a fortune, Lol MooK
