Interesting, the diode bridge is just 2 diode. Always thought they were 4 diodes.

4 is the proper way and that's what was there in the beginning. What he tried to make is a Full wave rectifier (Don't get it confused with a Full Bridge Rectifier), I assume that he ended up with a Half wave rectifier and one of the diodes is completely useless as this configuration needs a centre tap transformer.
