One massive tip on Shimano loose bearings cup system is to remove 1 side the non drive side cup and bearings and look inside the axle hole area where the bearings are close to the hole for ridges and this means the axle is bent and is making the hole rough so the bearings will make noise. I had this on both sides of a rear wheel of a foldable bike and after smoothing the axle hole the bearings even with the small bent axle stopped the grinding. Next problem was the Freewheel making noises only when pushing forward then the noise stopped when freewheeling lol. So after tossing the 6 speed freewheel and adding a 7 speed freewheel the bolts for the mud guard touched the Freewheel so cut the ends of the screws done. Noises on bikes are not easy to troubleshoot because a bike hanging tripod does not add weight on top of the bike . Only when riding it you get the full scope of the noise.

"part 2 "how to use a shrinking machine and venture into the hub to find what is making that annoying sound !
@alex_smallet7 жыл бұрын
I have a pair of Fulcrum Racing One wheels. Pretty old one. They sound similar without a microphone. It's probably due to the hub design and large aluminium spokes that amplify the sound as an old gramophone did.

this is a good idea, but I think this guy is a perfectionist using a whole microphone system just to listen to his hubs

Only potential downside is that microphone is meant for voice, not measurements so it may not be completely flat with frequency response. But for figuring out smoothness it's probably sufficient.
@stevenleffanue8 жыл бұрын
+QuickQuips True. Tried to make it easy to understand without fancy equipment. Also its not too hard to "try this at home" :)

If your hubs need adjusting then chances are they are worn out or nearly so. If they dont need adjusting then they are most likely ok and perhaps only need re-packing. Take the wheel off the bike and have a good feel. Smooth? Rough? Gritty? Last two remove axle and inspect.

Great video. Just something I notice coming from audio eng background, you really shouldn't hold a condenser mic by hand for so many reasons, major points being it also takes vibrations from your body->arm, second you should place the mic at least 2 inches from the hub and the capsule pointing towards the centre of hub to avoid any air noise cause by the spinning wheels and capture the exact noise, thirdly, C1 condenser mic produce "lot" of noise and connecting it to low-consumer level preamp will sure multiply that. Anyhow what you suggested with the earphones is far more practical/logical technique. Because if you are going to do a lab test, you need to have the proper mics, pre-amps and techniques to do a "Lab" test. Hope you see this positively! Cheers!

Dear Sir, Thank you sharing these video's on bearing. I was thinking if the wheel is not balance (ie one side of the wheel is heavier then the other) then it may generate a frequency resonant.
@stevenleffanue7 жыл бұрын
+Ron Tan Glad you like the vids Ron. Yes, most wheels are unbalanced...usually by a heavier valve stem but not alarmingly so. Most people would never notice unless they are a light rider descending at speed and even the,usually not an issue. If it worrys you it can usually be balanced by making the valve heavier or lighter accordingly.

@lofturhjalmarsson98964 жыл бұрын
bike rolling badly no results on yt but this on top near. could not find reason it was spokes too very soft bendy not tight . did not slow much turning held up. then often tight or dry or wrong grease oil too thick on older normal bikes. l dont think about wear, oil said to las a week or few but easy to drip inside but can carry sand in but rarely so much that can hear cracking .

Could be loose spokes?
@uvwuvw-ol3fg4 жыл бұрын
Had a clicking sound from spokes which stopped after oiling with Boeshield or anything else. Now only after 350km on Chosen 150T and some light shock loads front and rear Taiwanese/Chinese IBR-STAR bearings seem to be slightly notchy/rough. When listening trough screwdriver they produce some hissing/howling sound. When spinning backwards there were some crunchy sounds occasionally. In instructables article they say that good bearings should sound like "whisking", dry ones "sandy".

@stevenleffanue6 жыл бұрын
First find out what is making the noise? Is it the clutch or bearing or something else. If you still cant figure it out, take the wheel to your local bike shop to fix.
