I drive a minty 2004 Jaguar X-Type 2.5V6 SE Estate and find it an interesting contrast to the Rover 45 V6 I owned in 2018. Includes a demonstration of the Quickclear heated windscreen, drizzel, grimness and some nice noises (not the indicators).
HubNut store can be found via: hubnut.org and will be operating even while Ian is overseas. Thank you.

Top Gear in its heyday drew an audience of tens and tens of millions worldwide, every episode, including, and this is important, women. No way will the independent KZbinrs attract family viewing and the budget and the absolutely thrilling camera work. I'm a guy and genetically bound to enjoy these little channels/streams. That's an excellent observation. I never thought about that before but I think you're right. That part of the car seemed familiar but now you've mentioned it I can see why! Also on an aviation note, I think that the "spinners" that cover the speedo and tachometer needles were deliberately shaped to resemble the prop spinners on some classic aircraft.

Can't believe these cars get so much bad press. I bought a mint 02 plate 'JagDeo' for £1,500 four years ago - as a temporary runaround between buying another Merc E Class. Over 4 years down the line, it still looks and drives like it is absolutely brand new (although my 2.1 V6 sounds a lot more refined than this model). Absolutely gorgeous cars. I was always a Mercedes-Benz sycophant; but my days with Merc rust-buckets are well and truly over. I have NEVER driven a car as beautiful as an X-type!

I've just come across this report, only two years late, but as an x type owner for the last four years, I have to say that they are very underated. Most of the negative press comes from people who have never owned one. You get a lot of car for very little money. I use mine daily and as it's the diesel I agree with you about how bad it sounds, but with the economy as good as it is, I can accept a bit of noise . Really what's not to like, very economical and service part's are very cheap. Keep up the good work, I enjoy watching your reports, it's a nice change to have someone who understands the vehicles but isn't up his own a**e.

The V6 sounds absolutely wonderful- you don’t need a stereo. My dad has the 2.0d and they do sound terrible outside. Very good on fuel though. They do feel quite cramped inside though (the column stalks are lifted off the Focus mk1) and the all black interior is quite depressing. Cream and wood is the way forward with a Jag. The estate is a beautiful looking thing 👌🏼 great roadtest

All hail the underrated Jaguar X-Type. We had a 2001 saloon version that had a tan leather interior and a sunroof that opened on it's own, (had to take the fuse out!). It was a sublime car that I wished we still owned. The X-Type was a car that made me feel special, the Rover 75 Classic that we own now feels like a Morris Oxford. Despite the odd comment about this part and that part being straight from a Ford, nothing that a driver or passenger was likely to see, or touch on a daily basis came from straight from a Ford. Even if a part was based on a Ford one, it was tweaked to make it unique. Unlike the early Ford era Aston Martins, Jaguar got away with not simply raiding the Ford parts bin. A diesel X-Type wasn't available at the car's launch, as Jaguar didn't like the Mondeo's 2.0L engine and were unconvinced that there was enough demand for an oil-burner. Lack of sales to fleet buyers soon put them straight on that last point. Then the only engine that was available at short notice was the previously rejected unit from the Mondeo. A lot of work went into "refining it" in the time available. IIRC the difference was noticed by the press at launch.

It's done 130k, 15k I've done, it uses no oil or water and runs like a dream I service it every 5k but that's just me and what I do to all my cars The only real issue with them is the sills mine show no signs of rust and the knock sensors can sometimes need replacing. The diesel engine is a nightmare with numerous faults that can raise their ugly heads ie. Turbos, turbo actuators, egr valve problems, injector problems. I would not buy a diesel but a petrol I would most definitely buy another. Mine is an 04 plate and will be keeping it for as long as I possibly can.

Another Hubnut video I agree with 100%. I promised myself a X type but somehow it hasn't happened as yet. A couple of friends had x types. One had a diesel which was as dire as Hubnut says in his review & the other was a 2.5 v6 x type saloon which I like a lot. But why is being based on the Mondeo such a bad thing? The Mondeo had always been a benchmark in its class and Mk3 Mondeo(on which X type is based) especially was a leap ahead of its rivals like VW Passat. If being based on Mondeo is such a catastrophy, then the A4 was based on VW Passat. Clearly the X type had its failings, but in no way was the platform to blame for that. I prefer the contemporary Mondeo for its styling, engine range and space utilization over the retro looking X type, but there is no better platform Jaguar would have got for its 3 series rival.

I owned one of these (sedan 2007 2.5 AWD) and it was the most reliable car I've ever had. Drove about 60.000 kilometers on it. Very good reliablity but it was bit of a gas hog. Funny that people in my country thought it was "super expensive" because it was a Jaguar (they're relatively rare around here). The most important maintenance was to change the oils in the back differential (because it was AWD). But when the maintenance was done it never gave any problems at all. It ended up with 325.000 kilmeters on the clock.

I had forgotten about the estate. I never liked the saloon styling because it seems be trying to be a mini XJ (X350) instead of being its own design and the hump on the rear wing above the wheel arch is too humpy, the XJ isn't like that. The video has made me realise that the estate solves this, and the 4WD makes it a geniune niche car. This with a set of winter tyres would be a weapon in poor weather. Thanks for posting.

I think the Mondeo DNA is a good thing. The Mondeo is a very good platform to develop from. Adding permanent 4wd and a more powerful engine basically means you have a car that trumps the hot Mondeo, the ST220 (except the Jaguar is necessarily more softly sprung). Don't buy the diesel, it's not worth the grief. I had a 3.0 V6 manual saloon in black with black leather interior and black trim. It was an excellent car, looked nice, drove lovely, and presented zero issues. What's more it had the sills already replaced so there weren't massive worries on the horizon. I would definitely say get a 3.0 manual. The automatic transmissions are a known weakness, and are under extra strain due to the 4wd system. Furthermore the 2.5 is just as thirsty as the 3.0, so you might as well have the extra power. The 3.0 is firmly in quick car territory, it's quite racy in an X-type. Your main downfall owning one of these if it's a good one will be fuel economy. You won't see over 25 MPG on a mixed cycle. The equivalent XJ6 (X350) with the same engine is more frugal believe it or not!

I had a 2005 2.0 DS Saloon model for a number of years and it was an excellent handling car, the few times i visited a Mechanic in those years for things like a new Turbo Hose the Mechanics commented on how it had a good strong engine. Mine did produce a little too much Black Smoke though but i think the fact that it was remapped had something to do with it because i kept the EGR valve clear.

I had the 2001 manual 2.5 saloon, fabulous cars & massively underrated. Incredible midrange punch from these engines! The 60/40 AWD is brilliant, although it's a shame they ditched the viscous coupling in favour of traction control from 2004 on. I drive an XJ now, but still miss the X-type when it snows!

Hi Hub Nut. Yes, after our Mondeo we bought a new X-Type 2.0V6. Mmmmm! We replaced it after seven years with a new 2litre diesel. This was the face lifted car 09 reg. Oh my god what a difference. It had electric everything, smelled nicer, seemed faster, looked 100% better inside and out, was far more economical and totally reliable. After 9 years we reluctantly traded it for a snazzy EX R sport. I could have cried. I'd have that X type back in a heartbeat. I absolutely loved it. My wife wouldn't drive the XE so we've now got a Fiesta. Don't ask. This Fiesta is a 1litre but goes like stink but I love another X Type. Cheers. Derek Taylor.

Good review! I had a stick shift version of the same and they are great cars. The one thing you might have mentioned is the rust issue. If buying. you MUST look under the the plastic sill covers which can hide a whole lot of problems. Cars are routinely written off because of the rust being hidden. The biggest concern is that it is often missed at MOT time so consequently it is often found when the car is too far gone. I now have an S-Type which can be vulnerable to the same problem. It needed a small amount of remedial work this year and that cost 500!

I took my Brother in-law's 54-plate X-type estate for an MOT last year. It was a very tired manual two wheel drive Diesel and I absolutely hated it! The springs had gone in the gear shifter so it was hellish to change. One of the headlights was aiming at the ceiling during the MOT! Eventually we managed to fix it and then two weeks later the alternator regulator decided to give up and fry all the electrics. He has a Mercedes C-class now...

I got told off by an owner of these that it certainly wasn't a Mondeo in a morning suit seeing as it had 'Jaguar' on the engine cover. I really like these though, especially in wagon form, very handsome motor. AWD anyone? I'd love one of these.

I never understood why some folk made such a big deal about this being based on a Mondeo's underpinnings. For starts, it was the mk3 Mondeo which was a fine car. Secondly, you don't hear Audi drivers complaining about the premium they pay for their A4s which, by this logic, is a Passat in a fancy frock.

I had the 1999 Jaguar 3.0 V6 S Type, all the interior 'wood' trim was plastic but looked very much like wood, had me fooled for a while until I noticed a tiny hairline crack in one of the panels! The steering wheel was actually made of real wood surprisingly. Mine had the built in sat nav with the control unit for it in the boot, which had a CD built into it to update the maps. Mine also had the j gate gear selection but I never really used anything other than Drive, which seemed to work very well. The v6 in mine was actually all ford based with the jaguar intake manifold, ford engine parts are a lot cheaper than the jaguar equivalent, so when ordering parts, make sure you check if a ford part is available.👍😎

The trim is wood (Jag has never used fake wood) but, like all veneers, thin. It is coated with a thick layer of lacquer - that must be what hairline cracked.

Just noticed this has been posted for three years !! I'm now on my second X-Type estate.. as it happens, the same colour as the one shown. A pity he wasn't looking at the paint on a dry day.. it's one of the most beautiful paint jobs you could wish for.. the green has been injected with almost microscopic gold flakes.. in the sunlight it's absolutely stunning. The bonnet catch is in the left footwell and with 8 years of ownership of two X-type estates, I've not had an issue with either. Sorry HubNut but you should have looked a little further.. there is a spare wheel, beneath the floor in the boot. For the past 5 years I've had the 2.2 turbo-diesel, a marked improvement on the 2.00 Turbo, it gives exactly the same performance as the petrol alternative, but around 50mpg on a long run at 70-80 mph and half the road tax (I believe), obviously more noise than the petrol engines but one of the quietest diesels on the road, any diesel noise is only noticed when idling stationary, once underway we don't notice it at all, a short time ago I considered an Audi diesel convertible as a toy for the summer, within in a minute I'd had to shut the thing down.. bought an XJS instead! In the 8 years of owning X-Type estates (perfect for all my boat stuff), I've fitted one clutch and had two suspension arms replaced.. other than that, totally reliable. Jokes about Mondeos.. laugh all you wish but I'm driving a Jaguar with beautiful stitched cream leather upholstery, wonderful for long journeys, great overtaking performance, I've had a dozen or more Jaguars over the past 50 years including two E-Types and the original S-Type..(1966)..I've always considered them a 'driver's' car so opt for the manual gearbox, I like to decide for myself which gear I need ! I love it dearly, can't see anything I'd rather have under ten thousand pounds, and why buy another car that I have no knowledge of.? I'm taking it in soon to have it completely checked over and hopefully will get at least another five years out of my 2007 X-type ! PS.. HM the Queen owned the X-Type estate for a number of years so it must be a bit special :>)

My wife had the 2.2 diesel, also an estate. Ours came just at the facelift time which meant that it was fitted with DPF filters which made it entirely useless for the commuting it was bought for. However it was a very versatile engine (filters aside) lovely to drive and you would never know it was diesel from inside apart from the eager shove in the back when the turbo kicked in - sometimes a little belatedly... though to be fair, the surge made up for the wait. I think Jaguar cut the model much too early. On a factory tour, I talked with an engineer who told me the X-Type estate was actually mostly the equivalent Volvo model, I forget which, but when parked next to them, it was immediately obvious.

Thank you. This is my X type in the video... I didn't actually want this car, but it was my Wife that persuaded me to buy it... and I'm thankful she did. Going by the paperwork, it's wanted for nothing and has been very well cared for. I've had it almost a 12 months now and can honestly say, I absolutely love this car and it's still wants for nothing.

As a Jag fan, and XJ40 owner, I am absolutely not ashamed to say that I also really like the X-type. Drove one for work years ago (2.5, manual), and they are nice cars, yes they are not terribly refined, and do have some occasional faults and lots of plastic, but to me they are still 100% Jag, and the Ford underpinnings if anything make it more reliable. The styling is still to this day to die for - so elegant, classy, and flowy.... Lovely car!

Currently have two, a 2.5 Sport Saloon and a 2.0D Sport Premium estate. Both are fantastic and over ten years of ownership have been refined, reliable and fun to drive. The Diesel version is brilliant on the motorway with mountains of torque and feels much faster between 50mph and, erm, 70mph than the 2.5. In bad weather the 4 wheel drive 2.5 just has the edge (it’s spookily good on ice) but the heavyish engine makes the driven front wheels of the Diesel version grip almost as well. On a twisty road I prefer either to our 4.2 XK8.
