Very please the Perodua came through It's MOT with little effort. It looks as though the tracking is toeing out, which will make the steering more numb around the centre. So fresh rubber and a wheel alignment will likely work wonders. But, you've got to keep it!

My wife had a Matiz for 8 years and loved it - we had to scrap it due to MOT/rust/clutch slip all coming together and we got a Hyundai that she just never got on with - that was a stop gap that failed after 2 years on spectacular rust issues and she is back in a Matiz and has been for 3 years and is loving driving life. You know what you like sometimes and if you like what you like then nothing else will do eh?

Top tip for stickering headlights, get some Kapton tape to put on the lens first as it sticks well but also comes off clean. It produices a decent selective yellow colour which can be used to see if you’ve masked the right place before covering it over with electrical tape (those ‘converters’ are a waste of money and the fitting sheets even con people by recomending using them on cars with adaptable beam pattern). You could also use it to cover the whole lens if your planning on competing in the Le Mans GT class and need selective yellow lights.

What a great video. I really like both of you offering your thoughts on the same car and the comparison with the Charade. It’s also interesting hearing of the issues faced by shorter drivers when they’re driving a car. I have just the opposite at 6 foot 1, particularly as I age and get s bit less flexible. I was almost permanently stuck in a MG Midget at a recent car show, much to the amusement of friends and family!

I've often found in older cars that a wobble to check it's in neutral is not a good way of dong it, because of slack centring springs and the like, it's easier to move the gear knob a full left and full right to check.

Having recently returned from a drive from Chester to Pembroke and back through the middle of Wales the 20mpH limits made sense apart from one problem. The number of people displaying fake 20mph limit signs. It got to the point when I almost stopped believing them unless they were electronic. Next time I will take photographs of them as defence if I ever miss seeing a real sign and get done. That sort of thing helps nobody.

To be able to commentate whilst driving shows that driving is becoming so much more natural for Miss Hubnut now. So much more confidence than before! One thing I do hope that Miss HN learned from this drive is that the red light on the dash is not just a warning for the handbrake - it also warns of low fluid in the main brake system. If it comes on during a drive it's always a very good idea to stop asap and check the brake fluid level. But certainly a nice little comparison between chemy and the Perodua, driving differences nicely explained!

Love the on-screen comments! As a note for Miss Hub Nut and anyone else that might benefit - red lights on the dashboard when in motion mean DANGER so should take great care. As Ian then pointed out and checked, the handbrake light is often the same indication that brake fluid is low so after a brake pipe change this could have been very serious.
@HubNut5 ай бұрын
Indeed. We pulled over to check, and I reasoned it was more likely a lamp fault than something serious.

Interesting comment from Miss Hubnut on gear selection for required speed. Our village has a 20mph, which is fine in third in my current Toyota, but required second in my previous BMW with its longer gearing. Both have a major displacement advantage over Carly's references too, being 1.4 and 2 litres larger respectively

One thing to be aware of is the influence of tyres on the way a car responds. You were driving on well worn, old and pretty rubbishy tyres. I think you might be amazed at the difference even budget tyres would make whilst premium tyres (probably costing more than the car) would make you think it was a different car. In addition stopping distances in the wet (for those occasional wet days in Wales) will be hugely reduced.

Good work Miss HubNut! Even though you had never driven that car before, you seemed to settle down pretty quickly. I would say you are a little harsh on yourself, but that just means you just care about your driving, and is way more preferable to someone who doesn't care. Sounds like the bushes in the gear linkage probably need changing.
@CatBroiler5 ай бұрын
Maybe the variable valves aren't lifting, or aren't lifting as much for whatever reason? If the car hasn't seen much use, and not much maintainance maybe it's affected the variable valve sprocket. A few short-interval oil changes might help? You could also remove the solenoids and test them. Less labour than removing all the timing gubbins to actually check, anyway. Although, a faulty solenoid should ignite the CEL.
@johnmoruzzi72365 ай бұрын
Yes, might be similar to Rover K-Series / Fiat VVC variator failure issues…. if it’s designed to be variable and it sticks then it won’t drive right…. Gear linkage bushes seem to need changing too ?

I loved your commentary, Mrs. HubNut!!! Your observations of the cars was top-notch! Do you have to start out on low-displacement cars when you're learning in the UK? Or is it just hard to get insurance for over a certain displacement? Anyway, it seems like a good idea. It's even good for enthusiasts to start out with tiny "under-powered" cars so they can learn the joys if driving a slow car fast. There's also a lot to be said for learning on a manual transmission. In the past i would have said you might be in a situation where you HAD to drive stick, but that's not likely here in the US anymore. But it still gives you a closer feeling to the car.
