Well Ian, Charles Smillie is already offering to do the repair. But I'm on the same line as Tony Sargent at first, the coolant foams but doesn't immediately overflow, I'm thinking old bad coolant, I also speak from 18 years of auto mechanic experience, your engine doesn't run too hot, your heating works well , those are the first signals if they don't work that there is a head gasket leak, so the next steps, drain the cooling system, flush with water (also look for drain plugs in the engine block) and then fill the system with good coolant (don't use cheap junk). Good luck with it Ian.

Hi Ian, Toyota Australia didn’t export this model of Camry to Thailand ( by the way Thailand is RHD), but they did build and export LHD Camry’s ( I Think it started with the next gen Camry) to the Middle East ( GCC countries) up until the closure of the factory) . Ford Australia did try to export the Ford Territory ( betty’s sibling ) to Thailand, but because of the very high tariffs they impose on imported cars, very few were brought in for evaluation purposes only.

Since you've driven some 800 km in that Camry and it hasn't overheated, I suspect it's not the head gaskets. My guesstimate is that the thermostat is stuck, not opening like it's supposed to. That's why the coolant level is pumping, coolant should flow steadily with a functioning thermostat. Besides, your coolant needs to be changed anyways. The car has been unused and not maintained so long that the coolant has lost its rust inhibiting properties. That could also cause problems, old coolant reacting with iron causes sludgy, rusty residues in the engines cooling passages. Toyota engines are a symbol of reliability :) - that's to say, when maintained. Don't overestimate your problems - or like the saying goes: " Don't throw your baby out with the bath water!"

Ian,you said you bought it from a dealer so you are covered under the CRA 2015 (Consumer Rights Act) which replaced the old Sale of Goods Act. This Act provides statutory protection for the purchase of new and used cars bought from a dealer. It states that items bought must be of satisfactory quality,FIT FOR PURPOSE,and as described. If a car develops a fault within the first 30 days of purchase,it is under statutory warranty and the buyer can simply reject it and return it to the dealer for a refund. If a fault emerges between 30 days AND 6 MONTHS from the date of purchase,the law assumes that the fault was PRE-EXISTING and,unless the seller can prove otherwise,the car is still protected by statutory warranty. Here,the seller has ONE CHANCE to fix the problem. If they do not manage to do that,the buyer is entitled to a refund,which may be less than the original purchase price to account for the time during which the car has been functional. After 6 months the automatic CRA 2015 expires. Hope this helps Return it ASAP

@@delukxy doesn’t matter what they say, a trader selling to a consumer cannot disclaim the warranty. The issue is proving that the dealer(?) knew the fault existed at the point of sale. If it was sold without a written warranty then it comes down to one person's word against another. They would also likely argue that you were given ample opportunity to inspect and drive the car. By law they are not allowed to sell you a car that is not in roadworthy condition but a fault like this does not make it that way. I'd first try flushing and replacing the coolant to get the rad-weld or whatever out and see what happens from there. I'd certainly not ignore it as it could fail catastrophically at the most inconvenient moment.

I would certainly recommend flushing and fully filling the system, and fitting a new radiator cap. It's clearly half-empty now which is not good in any case, and it may not be sucking coolant back from the overflow as it should. Then do a bit more thorough diagnosis by using a test kit to verify whether there really is combustion gas getting into the coolant. At least then you'll know what you're facing, and be doing what you can to prevent any more damage.

To rule out a positive pressure leak between any of the cylinders and the cooling system on the cheap: 1. Obtain a plastic sandwich bag, or the bag sliced bread comes in. (any clear airtight bag will do) 2. Nip into a hardware shop and buy one of those carbon monoxide detector cards with the red dot that changes colour in the presence on carbon monoxide. They are supposed to be stuck near your boiler. 3. Make sure the cooling system is bled, put the little plastic card in the bag, squeeze the air out and pop it over the expansion bottle rim (or remote radiator filler in your case). Put Post Office rubber bands around the neck to secure it tightly. 4. Start & idle. Then rev until the bag fills with air. 5. If that dot doesn't even begin to change colour there are no exhaust gasses getting into the water, if the bag blows up too big stop and let the air out and repeat. 6. If the bag blows up lots of times and the dot hasn't gone yellow, chances are the new water pump is at fault or the cooling system is not bled properly. I'd suggest the former. I've seen many a pound spent assuming the new part is good.

My Land Rover 300Tdi engine showed similar symptoms after having been worked on by someone who shall remain nameless. It behaved like it had a failed head gasket. It kept getting air in to the top of the system until flow was affected and the temperature would start to rise, until I bled the radiator and then the cycle would start again. The culprit was a sliver of silicone sealant which had got stuck in the venturi which connected the top of the radiator to the expansion tank, which meant it did exactly the opposite of what it should have done, pumping air in to the radiator instead of the expansion tank. Took out that little rubbery sliver and it was all fine again.

Worth trying: flush the cooling system and change the coolant. For a proper one for this year of Toyota. I think it should be orange colored (double check me!), not the pink one. Also, get new (genuine preferably) radiator cap. The one on the engine, if the pressures are all wrong, cooling system goes bonkers. Also, the bubbles might suggest that the water pump is actually bad, or some cheap aftermarket one was used and it might not work properly. And of course, as Bror mentioned, the exhaust gases detection kit might come useful here.

@siraff44613 жыл бұрын
You need a compression and leakdown test to see if it actually is internal or if its one of the many systems where water meets something else. Does it have water heated manifolds? Water-oil oil (or trans) cooler? Unfortunately if its bubbling its usually bad news but its better to check first because if its only a cracked manifold or something you're laughing. Oh and the seller knew. They almost always do and the heater thing is a dead giveaway. Name and shame.
@paulross48343 жыл бұрын
In order to discover which cylinder head has the problem you could remove from the front, then rear head one plug at a time and run the car in each case until the bubbling starts. If in one case there is no bubbling, then that head is the culprit.
@groovedwareman3 жыл бұрын
If it has been overheated in the past several times, the aluminium head/heads might well have warped so causing leaks at the head gasket. . You would need to diagnose and rectify what caused overheating in the first place otherwise any engine repairs you might do are pointless - it would just do it again - I'm not an expert but used to have a Hillman Imp (Californian) Hours of fun!! On the plus side the bodywork seems in good nick no significant rust or body been warped in a heavy smash then bodge repaired - if the bodywork is sound you can fix mechanicals - its the bodywork that is the make or break issue IMHO - well, within reason.

Served my apprenticeship on these engines. I highly doubt it has head gasket issues…. That coolant bubbling / circulating when the cap is removed is normal. Carry out a Teekay test. Had a similar problem with my first car (1500 Allegro). It had had the head gasket replaced a few weeks before and we were setting off from London to spend new year with friends in Newcastle. Driving up the M11 the temperature gauge crept up until it was in the red so we stopped at the services in Huntingdon where the contents of the coolant system promptly emptied itself onto the floor. Let it cool down, refilled it and, after a while watched the temperature climb until coolant was pumped out again. AA came “ head gasket “ I was told then had it loaded onto the truck and taken back to London. Turned out to be a blockage in the radiator . A new radiator solved the coolant problem but this car really lived up to the name Allagro. Hope your problem turns out to be as straightforward as mine.

I’m really not sure where this will lead to, but it seems like your run of bad luck is being seen by some as a bit too ‘organised’. You have a great deal of work to be done on other vehicles, that a full time mechanic would take several weeks to get through and with the best will in the world I do wonder if we will ever see the end of what is getting to be one hell of a list of things to do. I think from now onwards checking reviews of sellers and previous MOT histories and acting on that is the way to go - even if spending more initially to get a decent example. Good luck

First suggestion - is to fit a 'blank' (non pressurised) radiator cap instead of the pressurised one - use it for 3 days then check the water level in the plastic reservoir. With heat & cool it should 'burp' all the air out of the engine - provided the plastic reservoir doesn't get sucked dry. Air coming into the coolant is better than coolant being forced out with coolant pressure.

Ian, one of the tell tale is no heat in the heaters as the air replaces coolant there first. That cap you removed is the highest point to expell air so there is no air lock. Fully it to the brim and put the cap on. If you want to test it then get a sniff test kit, that will tell you if the head is blown. It doesn't look like a blown head, fill it up and run her and see how it goes.

Another vote for the coolant test kit! Find out if it really is exhaust gases making it bubble and go from there. No heat in the cab can be an indicator of a massive air lock, and I seem to recall you mentioning it’s had a cam belt and water pump recently, if the system wasn’t bled properly afterwards or if the new pump is bad (surprisingly common!) it could be causing a whole load of pressure issues. Either way, it’s definitely worth repairing in my opinion! Of course, on top of all the other jobs you’ve got…

Use an old spark plug to make an adaptor so you can connect an air line to each cylinder in turn and look for air bubbles coming up the filler pipe. Piston at TDC on compression stroke, obviously. This can also give you an rough idea of the condition of the valve seats and rings by how much air passes each one.

Late thought, again something I've done in the past when I had younger brain and an old Landie, mount a secondary recovery catch bottle that can be easily detached. Route the expansion tank overflow pipe into it. After a trip and things have cooled down enough, open the pressure cap and return the coolant mix back to the system. It might help keep things manageable until you can get it repaired.

Considering the low mileage that the car has done i'd say it is worth fixing. You can often see on which head the HG has blown by looking at the color of the spark plugs. The coolant acts as a steam cleaning agent. If there is one plug exceptionally clean (and all other 5 the usual grey-brownish) then you have found the cylinder where the coolant is leaking to. Obviously the associated head will need to come off.

Hmm... My best guess is that it's a head gasket leak which is still slight. It's enough of a leak that the combustion pressure is getting into the cooling system, but not a big enough leak that any noticeable amount of coolant is getting into the cylinders. It's just possible (stroke a rabbit's foot and cross your fingers) that the head gasket isn't burnt out beyond redemption (yet) and that simply retorqueing the heads could save the day for some time to come. That probably wouldn't be too difficult if the engine was in the correct way, but some fool put it in sideways, and it looks like the manifold is over the top of the rear head. I was a bit surprised given the hassles you had with a transverse V6 in a Rover that you went that way again. And I'm surprised that Toyota maintains such a good reputation, given that for the last 40 years they have been a breed notorious for head gasket problems as soon as their cars enter the second hand market. Cheers!

We stopped buying Toyotas in the mid 90s as every single one bar a Corolla did a head gasket. Two cars within weeks of each other. I bought a new RAV4 diesel in 2013 and within 30k the engine seized due to excessive oil consumption. The coolant should be full up at that cap on the engine and the expansion at max as you know, but be extremely careful when opening said cap when the engine is hot, and first thing I would do to confirm the headgasket has gone is to do a "Stiff Test" (technical term 😁) if no combustion gases detected on said Sniff Test then there could be a leak somewhere and they've put Radweld in it, a rusty radiator is common on Japanese cars, if not it'll need a good check over and/pressure Test when cold.

After watching this video, I think the others are right, It is a cracked cylinder head that is causing the issue, The crack in one of the cylinder heads is most probably very close to the exhaust manifold, hence the exhaust gasses are getting into the cooling circuit when the engine warms up and everything expands... Good luck in getting it fixed, It is a very nice and very rare car.
