Ian, check Gisele's earthing points. Often bolted to the body, they can corrode. Use petroleum jelly to ensure consistent, corrosion free contact. Voltage tends to try an find a path of least resistance - you might find your wipers working when you switch the heater on or something 😆 🤣

I was overtaken by a 2CV this morning on the A14 between Woolpit and Bury St Edmunds. I was pootling at 65 and the 2CV was pushing 70. I suspect they were having more fun. It reminded me of a trip in central London in a brand new 2CV Charleston at rush hour in the early 80s, hemmed in on either side by FX4 taxis.

I'm sure like many we look forward to a healthy Giselle. I have to say that like with the slumber of winter with Elle that TWC should get out and enjoy the sunshine to top up her vitamin D along with the others. Oh and I hope Bella doesn't have anything serious with the oil spots. As usual many thanks for sharing Ian.

The more I see Miss Daisy, the more I regret not buying a Daihatsu when it was still possible. I love the gear indicator on the dashboard and the cool simple Japanese design. That car sends me slight Austin Allegro vibes in a good way! It is always also fun to see you getting back into Ellie at this time of year, it is so obviously your favorite car. I was interested to see the problem you had with the throttle return spring on Giselle, I have a problem with the throttle on my Wagon R+ and have never considered if there should be a throttle return spring too? I stopped driving the Wagon R+ because the throttle stuck wide open one day. I thought it was a dirty throttle housing but cleaning that has not resolved the problem. So now I am again learing new stuff from your tinkering videos. Thanks Ian 🙂

Ah yes, the 2CV-therapy is just magical. I have my own 2CV I can drive whenever I want, but still I immediately smile when I see and especially hear one. "How could you not have a car that does this?" (hydraulic suspension rising): I ask myself that question quite often, knowing I have vivid memories of the "airplane take-off routine" of the diesel bx stationwagon my dad had when I was a child (unlocking all the doors individually, preheating the diesel engine, starting the engine, waiting for the suspension to rise...). But I only have indoor storage for 1 car, which Soleille the 2CV is taking up, so if I get another car it can't be a very nice one or one that easily rusts... I was very tempted by a BX recently, also a diesel and a break, but the one my dad had was a non-turbo blue pre-facelift, the one that I saw for sale a turbo grey facelift, so I managed to resist the temptation... for now...

Thanks for the update Ian. Great to see Elly out again. Can't help but think that a couple of departures are needed and a new arrangement found for Bob. Some tarpaulin at least along the shuttering would do something about the weather getting in along the side. Is there any mileage (pun intended) in throwing electrical components off a Matiz scrapper to try and get to the bottom of Myrtle running woes? Throwing parts is less than an ideal solution but in the absence of suitable diagnostic gear it might cut a corner for not too much.

Never had or wanted a 2CV but I love seeing them. Many years ago I was driving my Princess 2.2 heavily loaded with camping gear and kids down a steep French motorway at about 70mph and being passed by a 2CV. Could th rattle when cornering have been caused by the errant 7/16 spanner ( why wasn't it a meteic spanner ?)

If I remember correctly, the early CX had different size tyres front and back, 175 on the rear and 185 section on the front I think. Later ones were rationalised to the same front and back for easier replacement/ rotation and spare wheel compatibility I imagine. The CX had a massive track width difference front to back too which might have influenced that design decision, that and Michelin's input. I think your decision for Elly is eminently sensible.

So my guess at CV's was so wrong but never had a vehicle with so little clearance between wheel and kingpin. I'd never powdercoat wheels as not hard enough, have them stove enamelled, more expensive but worth it over time. If you can do all the prep then money can be saved.

The tiredness and stress and whatever, Ian, might really, as you rightly assume, have got to do with the fact that unconsciously you feel guilty about not getting all cars sufficiently out for a drive, and with the even more important fact that you feel an enormous pressure to do every car right (attention, tinkering, driving ...), something you probably do, but only through obligation, and not fun, and that's the gist of the problem, I think. Now, with, say, 4 cars AT MOST, that would all be much more manageable, something you yourself have occasionally mentioned as well (without actually getting round to it). That would be Elly, TWC, Betty and Bella, I presume. JUST 4 cars, I know, but a lot of peace of mind and absence of some kind of guilt in exchange! Worth to ponder (again), I think.

Powder coating is not all it's cracked up to be. The problem seems to be with the people doing the job. I have an oven which was powder coated instead of the traditional stove enamel. Within 2 years from new the powder coating was peeling off all over it exposing rusted metal underneath. I also saw that happen to some council litter bins around where I live. Within 3 or 4 years they were peeling too. Just use good paint which will outlast powder coating, unless you can afford stove enameling.
