My Land Rover Series III was the same when I bought it. A previous owner fitted some Trayal T-70's on it which were lethal when wet. If you went around a roundabout at more than 15mph, you'd be facing the other direction, and it wasn't even an off-road tyre. I since fitted some Avon Rangemaster's as fitted as OE back in the day and even 5 years and 28,000 miles later they're still like glue in the wet. I used to have access to Falcons back in the mid '90s - EF and EL era, and they came fitted with either Bridgesone or Goodyear tyres. Ian, I totally understand how this can happen. It is very easy to do. Number one child was enjoying her first year of her motoring freedom and was driving our AU through a roundabout, after it rained, and spun out. She smacked the kerb with the left rear wheel. Fortunately it wasn't far from home and when she rang, we rushed up to rescue her. No harm done to her or anyone else, just temporarily shattered nerves. She choose a good spot to do it, as it was only about 500m from our mechanic. I checked the car out and drove it his shop. It was making a horrible grinding noise which turned out to be a bent dust shield gouging a groove in the brake rotor. We also suffered a bent half shaft. A second hand shaft, new bearings, a new rotor and shield and she was good to go. The diff was fine, the wheel was undamaged and the tyre was good too. These cars are practically indestructible. We had it for another 6 years after this incident and she and number two both drove it during that time without killing it. With the enormous power and torque that Betty possesses, an open diff and no traction or stability control, make premium quality tyres an essential fitting on these cars. IIRC, we had Dunlop, Goodyear and Bridgestone tyres fitted and you still had to be careful on wet roads. Goodyear are better than Goodride (or any other junk brand.) Betty will soon be the Queen of the Highway again.
@chilternsroamer8723 жыл бұрын
A useful experience video. I'd join others in recommending better tyres. It is in "marginal" conditions that tyre quality counts the most, so that's why I always pay the extra. Round here, it is mostly potholes, folks falling asleep (folks consistently hit the centre barrier of the nearby dual carriageway where there is a very gentle curve), and young people driving into trees on minor roads. Any way, we learn a lot from things that don't go so well. I am also glad we live nowhere near Lincolnshire.

Nothing happend in New Zealand where you drove thousands of miles and in GB you end up in a sideway skid. You are getting too old for playing a stuntman. Glad you are ok Mr Hubnut.God you have still the humour, today wasn't my best day ate something bad.Then your remark to have sign to subscribe to Hubnut made me laugh. Thank you for that. Humour saved me a lot of times in lfe. Stay strong!

My late grandmother used to live round there, so I know that road well, and it is nasty! The important thing is that you are OK.
@johncallaghan46163 жыл бұрын
Most important is that you're alright and that nothing worse happened (especially venturing further into that dip! Really feel for ya, and it's obvious that it wasn't your fault, if only from the scrapyard worth of broken parts below where Betty did manage to call a halt! Many years ago in my youth I had a similar issue at a wet roundabout in Manchester, but I'm the first to admit that speed was the main culprit (actually I was the main culprit), not helped by all four tyres being very close to, if not over the minimum limit, so your call on some new shoes in due course is probably a good one, especially as we race towards Winter - that said, I fully appreciate when you mentioned the speed at which it all happened, as I too was looking back down the road I'd just come up in less than the blink of an eye, and the eye that was blinking might not necessarily have been in my head! - just glad you're safe ! Chin up Betty, and chin up Hub Nut - look on the positive, at least the bent half-shaft straighten/swap will give you some more content, and you could give Maguiers Scratch 2.0 a try on the scratches. Stay safe!

Decades ago, I skidded off a road in my first Hillman Avenger. It finished up on its side. We pushed it back onto its wheels and drove away. But the first time I used the brakes, it was evident that I had bent a half shaft. It got repaired and drove on for many, many years afterwards.

Just so glad to see you in one bit and Betty able to be fixed. I really felt for poor Ms Hubnut having been in her shoes myself before now. Do left the community know if we can help get her back on the road , after all the time effort and money you spent bringing her to the UK we just want to see you both back out there having adventures and making us all smile 😊

There was an issue near me with a roundabout. Loads of RWD cars spinning round. Turns out the delivery drivers that deliver the fuel to the esso garage near by weren't purging the lines before leaving the station so the first exit on the round about meant everything in the diesel lines was spilling all over the tarmac.

I acquired a 52 plate Mitsubishi Space Star (coincidentally from a sweet lady called Betty!) for our eldest that had old Landsail tyres all round. I was so terrified something bad would happen that I swapped them at the earliest opportunity for 5 x all-season Bridgestone Weather Control A005, after watching tests on YT about how grippy they are in the wet. As well as wet grip, wet braking is now second to none. The cost £475, but I now have peace of mind. I guess the rubber you need for old Betty is not a standard offering in the land of the Pom, hence your order. I'm really glad you're fine and let us know how much Betty's new wellies will be. I for one (and I'm sure others) will be happy to contribute.

I drove a Falcon AU wagon as a company car here in New Zealand for 5 years. The RWD with live axle is treacherous on roundabouts in the wet. I actually refused to let a young pregnant lady in the office use the car on a wet day once. She accused me of of sexism, but I just knew how the car could behave. Goodrides are cheap Chinese tyres, I'd suggest you need the best you can get on the back of the Fairmont.

Ian; you're ok and the damage to Betty is thankfully minimal. And that's all we can ask for. Although I can imagine the conversation with the Rozzers; "Were you giving it large, Mr. Nut?!"

@Emanistan3 жыл бұрын
Actually, I think this is a day for celebration: when the faulty old tires gave out on you, it turned out to be just a minor skid in the end: Betty didn't slide those extra few centimeters into the gulch, there were no big rocks or pieces of concrete for her to smash into and cause major cosmetic damage, and of course you weren't damaged. A lucky escape all around.

Hello Ian. Most people don't get to bare their experiences in a way that someone with your profile does. There will always be the waggy finger brigade who seem to think that they could not or would not be in a similar situation as they, in their own minds, cannot get it anything other than perfect. You were today exposed to the laws of physics which apply to us all and despite their condemnation they would have ended up in the same place. The important thing is you are unharmed and the car can be repaired. Look on the positive side, it has provided potentially more content! Pleased you are OK after a very worrying incident for you.

Big old cars with a bit of power slip so easily in wet conditions, my omega can spin her wheels in the wet at 70 mph and roundabouts are really bad unless you drive extra with extra caution. just sneeze on wet roundabout and she's off sideways lol

And in Ian's defense, (not that he needs it) its never easy to stop a big old car from spinning 180 with all weight and all that that flopping about big old cars do.

Best to spend more on good tyres.

More than some time, I live there and it's been like it as long as I can remember, it doesn't help that you get diesel on there as well, ok dry, ok wet, it's damp when it is dangerous.
@another39973 жыл бұрын
@@johndilloway9762 How many thousands of car's go over that piece of the road every day? How many of them have crashed? Why have they crashed? A new road surface won't prevent diesel spills, nor rubber build up that occurs in the dry and becomes slippery when wet. It's easy to blame the council, but I bet they have had it inspected and it's not actually that bad... if you drive sensibly and your tyres are properly inflated, aren't bald and not cheap, nasty ditch finders.
