I know this is an ancient video but I figure people are either just getting into the drone hobby or are maybe purchasing more Hubsan Quads. I have several, the H107D, H501A and the H507D. The 107 and the 507D use the same TX. I realize that you're modding the 501, a different aniimal but the same family. I just received the H507D, have had the other two for a while. Have had the 'D' FPV model for just a couple days now and this video made me realize that it had the JST plug inside. I have recharged the batteries multiple times and never saw it before. Now that I know it's there, I plan on making use of it. I have aSpeedPak 2, 7.4v 6 cell battery laying around that will be perfect with a bit of velcro. Ysy!!! Now I won't have to recharge batteries so often. A quick snip and solder, some shrink tubing, and back in the air.

HI Just to let you know that Hubsan is sending a 7.4 1400mAH 1C 10.36Wh battery now with the H501S I just got a new one. The one I got 3 months ago needed the mod and your video was very helpful Thanks for all the good info.

I have tried this mod on my Hubsan h501s using 11.1v. I'm now back to stock, but now using 4x AA "Energizer Ultimate Lithium" batteries. I kid you not! I got 400m extra range (from the same spot). I have used the same battery set over 15 flights now, each flight ranging from 13min to 23 min. It's still on full bars. Just try them. Their around £5 for a pack of 4.

I think is the most brilliant idea out there, because is very simple, not modifications which allow you to use not just AA batteries, but also lipo and any pack you may have or built, wisely using the velcro to stick your battery pack in the back of the transmitter.

Modified my few years old remote with a 2200mAh 8C 7.4 battery. Just made a hole in the remote and soldered a connector to the battery connections. The pcb silkscreen says between 3 and 14v. Battery is attached to the backside of the remote with some 3M VHB velcro tape. Works like a charm, 10 minutes work. Thanks for the hint !

Have you checked the total flights duration yet using your 2000mAh battery? I've got a new 7.4v 1500mAh 30c I recently bought for my now long-gone XK X252. Do you think 1500mah will provide enough duration? Thanks! BTW, I'm trying to get all my 'quacks' in a row before my new 501 arrives. ;^)

Even better than the 25C lipos is the LiFe batteries like the ones Hobbyking sells for Transmitters. I had one I used for testing servos and I stuck it in and it fits perfectly . Its 9.9volt ,1500Mah and 1c. these are much better suited for low drain applications like a radio.

I have the H502S, similar Tx, but doesn't have JST plug. Half people say include buck board, half say don't need it for 2s lipo. I saw a vid showing the board printing of 13v capability, supposedly. I'll probably ask Hubsan directly (not Hubsanus, they are just a distributor).

Nicely done dude. I have seen others do this mod, some have managed to pick a battery that fits the battery bay, but I suspect the battery is smaller, hence less powerful, fewer flights. I have the advanced controller, so I'm looking for a similar mod for 12V, as that controller uses 8xAA. You know of a battery pack that might work? Possibly two small battery packs in series, so they can still be charged like the quad battery. Or, what I was thinking to do, I have some 12V deep cycle AGM bateries, about the size for a motorcycle. Make a belt pouch and have a cable to the Tx, add a DC socket to the side, plug it in.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried to relocate the female end of the battery connection on the transmitter itself ? Plugging and unplugging the battery from the tx (as is) will separate the wire connection of the batteries sooner or later. It's Seriously hard to unplug the battery from the transmitter the way they set it up. That's my only gripe. I love the drone, but hate the location of the outlet to plug/unplug the battery. That was a ridiculous location for the tx battery plug. I've been looking for a vid of someone relocating the female end to a more desirable location on the tx.

So just to confirm since this is an older video now, is the voltage regulator really needed? Or can you just connect a 7.4v 1500mah lipo without the regulator. With out destroying the transmitter. Mine does not have the just connector and will have to solder directly to the main board. Thanks for any help.

mickey dillard well a number of reasons. my transmitter was so modified it doesn't matter anymore. with the battery that I use I get 7-8 complete full 20 minute flights before needing to charge the battery. third I used the battery that I had from an old quad instead of purchasing a new one for no reason. perhaps you shouldn't just jump to conclusions there are certain reasons people do certain things my friend.

john lemmer cool man however most of the people choose not to remove the battery tray because then they can still use both types of batteries and case there's a need for it you can still do it. by removing the battery tray you have now limited what you can and can't do with the controller on the spot. to each his own let's hope your lipo holds up while you're in the field

How are you monitoring the voltage on the LiPo so you know when to change batteries? The manual shows that there is a display of battery voltage directly below the battery icon (upper right of LCD) but I haven't seen that in any videos. Ho do you know when your voltage has dropped to close to 6V?

@IFixShet
@IFixShet 8 жыл бұрын
You'll find the most hobby Flyers like to do things correctly which in this case would be actually applying a buck connector. The nice thing about this is that hubsan went out of their way to actually put a voltage regulator inside of it between 4 and 13 volts already. However for the controllers that don't have the jst connections built in you would definitely want to regulate the voltage coming in to the TX. With this battery mod I performed I made two 15 minute flights and it didn't even dent the battery meter. So with a voltage meter you can use a much larger battery which means less times needing to be charged because you can regulate the voltage input.
@ShenRC
@ShenRC 8 жыл бұрын
I ordered this quad about 4 days ago from bangood I wonder if mine will have the JST connector. A 2 cell Life pack is only 6.6V probably would not need a regulater for it I am thinking.
@IFixShet
@IFixShet 8 жыл бұрын
+shenlonco if you do not have the jst connection Port then you will definitely want to use a regulator. You would need to regulate the voltage coming into 6.1 volts anything higher and you'll start frying things.
@IFixShet

I just got mine with H501S V1.2.26 and V1.1.21 firmware but no Jst plug there is a place for it on the board. I think Hubsan has a lot of old stock and is just upgrading the firmware on the package. Also the luck of the draw which one you get. hahaI have just put in my Jst plug and using the lipo of the Hubsan 502E seems too work well, board also says 4-14 volts. Only time will tell if it is save without a voltage regulator

How many flights before you need to recharge the battery pack?
@IFixShet
@IFixShet 8 жыл бұрын
8 to 10 15 minute flights comfortably or five 20 minute flights before you're down to two bars which is way better than one set of 4 alkaline batteries that last one flight.

Nice, I did my own mod and get 10+ flights. My controller does not have a JST in the back, your lucky. Why use a buck converter?

To keep the board from overheating

Drone Worship Oh, why would it overheat? I have seen that said a few places but I can not make sense of it. I shall do some experimenting .

It's quite simple if you think about it. If you put too much power through a board where is it supposed to expand that energy at? If it doesn't have something to regulate the voltage it's just going to keep overpowering the board causing Heat which it will continuously distribute throughout the board during the flight. After a while the electric components won't be able to handle the heat and it will start burning out parts.

@@IFixShet I put a 4000mah 210g battery in the drone, it's heavy and it can't be stabilized anymore I bought it în vain , now I ordered another 2200mah 122 grams battery

Going to be honest with you man this drone is very very obsolete dude you might just want to sell that thing and get something a little more relevant by today's standards it's not even worth putting money into

@@FlorinCalisthenics dude this drone is like 7 years old at this point man it's not even relevant by today's standards I'm trying to tell you as an expert in drones who's been doing this since 2010 buy yourself something you will appreciate this is not it this is like a basic starter quad for a beginner and it will get boring very fast and you'll wonder why you put all your money into something that doesn't even have a stabilized camera

Should this mod work on the H502s tx with a buck or without buck?????
@IFixShet
@IFixShet 8 жыл бұрын
depends on whether or you already have a preinstalled Jst connection
@NoviceQuads
@NoviceQuads 8 жыл бұрын
I was going to add the jst connecter myself. or is it without the connector I would need the buck
@IFixShet
@IFixShet 8 жыл бұрын
You would add a jst connector and connect it to the buck and then connect the buck to the board with some solder points. You really don't want to run a battery over 7.5 volts and nothing lower than 4 volts. It says it will take 13 volts but I hear people are having board overheating problems which is why you would install the buck voltage regulator.
