So fascinating seeing this. Immigrants especially from the Indian subcontinent lived in the most drab areas of Huddersfield. And Now The Most Expensive areas of Huddersfield eg - Edgerton and Upper Birkby are full of Indians and Pakistanis. They have educated and bettered themselves as the years have gone by

Literally that's why old school elders coudnt speak English, they were that busy working and making a better life for their families. Contributed to society and community. Thier children children spoke with integrity, class and impeccable manners. Great citizens to grace uk are and still are sikhs. 👍♥️💪

Well said sir . People forget the other side of the story when Britons took over India in the 1800's ( like my great x2 Grandfather ) . They had the best jobs , best houses with servants etc treating the India population like rubbish . This old school elder had the perfect right to come to Huddersfield as a member of the Empire after they helped us win WW2 . I would love to know know where they young Sikh boy is now . I bet anything thing he did very well for himself and his family .

Fascinating stuff - thanks for posting. I suppose you can kind of see where the man at the beginning and his contemporaries were coming from; Pakistan/India and the UK were totally different worlds back then and many (if any) would never have experienced a clash of cultures on that scale. I imagine to them these strange newcomers might as well have been martians! I tell you what - I bloody love the accents, the little chap who did the interview was fantastic. Shame about his experience in school... Though frankly I wouldn't have expected anything different from those times.

Well said indeed . They had the worst jobs for the worst money being treated like rubbish . Fast forward to 2023 and the descendants of the Indian / Pakistani immigrants of that time probably make up the majority of health care professionals in Huddersfield such as Doctors , Surgeons, Pharmacists etc . British born and educated, but with Asian heritage is fine with me .

Many of Ist generation south Asian male youth in late 1960s & 1970s took a stand.they were real warriors. Goras used to spat on our women. These youths ,though much smaller in number, fought back. My step-phopo's husband who is frm Pak Punjab & used to live in Chesham then:told dat they used to take pepper spray to school.

the bottle of water is to clean ur ass properly as toliet paper isn't going to clean the shit off. Nothing 'questionable' about hygiene methods there but I understand what he meant, it's just that he put it in a way that's making it sound like he thinks these immigrants are stupid and can't use a toliet properly. Why even bring that up when there's bigger 'complaints/issues/differences' he could make about them.

thehoneyeffect can you not kind of understand where they’re coming from? The subcontinent and West Yorkshire were totally different worlds back then and the locals must have found the newcomers and their culture incredibly strange. Nothing racist about it I don’t think, just a natural reaction to something you’ve never experienced before.

Ben C....I understand where you are coming...I grew up in Paddock in the 1960's and can relate to the young boy but also the fears of the local population. It must have been a real shock seeing people with a different culture, religion, language outlook etc and not knowing this led to a lot of fear. Unfortunately when people fear something they become suspicious and defensive etc and that can appear as racist behaviour which in most cases was not. Thankfully we have come a long way...more to be done by both sides!!
