The street at 4:15 is Elmwood Avenue and I grew up there in the sixties and seventies. Never considered it a “slum”! Pretty sure we had more than 1 coat of paint on the walls! I also went to the featured school Spring Grove and I still have good memories of teachers Mrs Sibbald, Mr Redfearn and the headmaster was Mr Meal. I now understand why my friends from the same street all went to different schools due to the bussing policy for immigrant children. I remember when I first started school I couldn’t speak English and had to join a special class until we had picked up enough English to join regular classes

I went to Spring Grove too. My gran was Mrs Watt who played the piano. I remember Mr Meal and Redfearn too. Do you remember the scary Mrs Beaumont dinner lady? The school was the first in West Yorks to be reorganised to cater for kids from non-English speaking families along with everyone else (hence children being brought in from other areas, for classes specifically to help those with no English) From memory, English speakers went through the usual years J1, J2 etc. Those needing help were in JR classes. I moved to New Zealand in 1971 and was astonished by the 100% sea of white faces at my new school. I had a flat in the big house at no.1 Elmwood Avenue years ago. Handy for town, and there was more than one coat of paint...

Back then whites clothes stunk of the smell of fried food because many dried their clothes in the kitchen which was the warmest part of the house. Also boiling cabbage and broccoli smelt like farts and when the Windows were opened back gardens smelt awful. But we did not see it as an issue then as we were used to it.

I went Spring Grove at this time (my gran was Mrs Watt who played the piano) and I remember the BBC's Panorama filming at the school for documentaries on racial intergration a couple of times. I think these are segments from those documentaries. I occasionally get asked about my gran. She died in 2008, I went down to the school and told them. The staff had all changed of course but her name and memory had somehow been passed down from earlier staff members.

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

The views and the accent of the old white middle-class somewhat racist gentleman fascinates me, as they are just the same views and accent of a modern-day counterpart. He's John Bramley, of Bramley's estate agents, and those who live local will see his firm is very established today and he has done rather well for himself. He talks of what a shame it is how immigrant populations are pushing white populations out, and when asked for reasons for this, cites "the smell of the food, and you can't talk to Mrs. Brown over the garden fence" (I can't see why you couldn't speak to a neighbour in their presence, unless you were speaking negatively about them?) It would seem that Mr Bramley, as an estate agent, profited heavily from this rhetoric he was spewing, thus further driving down house prices and enabling himself to snap them up cheaper, just look at Bramley's today! Nowt changes, everything just gets older.
