I have a Steyr M9, use it as my carry pistol. The trapezoidal sights take a little getting used to but I find it easier to get on target with it over any other sight style. The factory trigger is fantastic. I still want a Hudson H9 though, I think a few generations of improvements from now it'll be a real gem.

Kawboy65 I don’t have one myself but I compared a friends m40? Against my glocks, xdm, beretta 96, custom Ngai 1911 in 40, cz75.....I may have had others that day but don’t remember. Anyway, the steyr was softer shooting and seemed to have less muzzle flip. I was using as test Ammo...lawman 165 gr which are fairly hot 40 caliber.

I have the L9-A1, which is the full size 9mm. It amazes me that, if I am having a bad range day and seem not to be able to hit with my other guns, I can pull the Steyr out and instantly start shooting good groups again. I did have to put Talon type rubber grips on it because there isn't enough grip out of the box. If they would have marketed these pistols strongly when they first came out, I don't think there would be nearly as many polymer pistols on the market today.

So would a Steyr be better for having both the larger M model and the S model for training, one for truck or home and one for concealed carry but both close if not the same as far as controls and feel as opposed to having a Hudson and a compact Steyr?

If you look closely, you can see how far the barrel is up and away from the trigger on Hudson. It's just the grip angle is tilted to bring the rear of the grip closer to the upper slide and front way down and far from the barrel or the slide. While on the styer the trigger, the rear grip, both are very close to the barrel. The larger area on the front of both the pistols are set up in a very different way, the two are not equally placed at all. On styer the larger area comes just in front of the trigger guard and just below the barrel, while on hudson, the larger area is gradually slimming down above the trigger compartment, so the whole trigger segment stays below that larger area and is very confusing.

As much as I admire the ingenuity of Hudson and their efforts to create a hybrid 1911 striker-fire pistol, I would prefer to have 2 separate pistols (standard 1911, and striker-fire pistol, such as a Steyr) in my collection.

"little bit of mush" isn't there on pre a1 models or a1 models. Your model has a roll pin under the sight post. You will here their marketing spin of "it improves the trigger" and this is one of those things that's partly true, because it does increase the durability of a part, but the main reason it's there is to add "a little bit of mush" during the take up to the trigger for legal/liability/lawyer reasons. Pre 04 models have the best triggers.

Ok, first , if I were to buy a M9-a1 steyr as opposed to a Hudson 9mm would I be better off because the same platform of the steyr S9-A1 is it’s little brother as far as concealed carry? Both Steyr models are the same and one should train with the same platform?

I would stay away from the S9-A1 and the C9-A1 at this point. The short barreled Steyrs, S models and C models, have had many many reports of erratic ejection and brass to the face. The Ls and Ms don't seem to have that problem. There's a Steyr forum with Steyr pistol enthusiasts and many have reported on this issue coming from the S9-A1 and C9-A1. I have the L9-A1 and the S9-A1. The L9 is my favorite pistol, and I own or have owned Glocks, M&Ps, CZ-75B, Walther PPQ, and other less known brands. I love my Steyr L9-A. My S9-A1 however, gave me lots of trouble, including brass to the face and top of the head, as well as failure to go into battery issues. The S9 also only comes with magazines that are plugged to only have 10 rounds, though the magazine itself is long enough to hold 12 if it didn't come plugged from the factory. They can take the longer magazines from the M9s but of course those will stick out.

Great vid! I actually own the exact same Steyr M9-A1 on OD Green and I absolutely love it! While my PPQ Navy has a high bore axis it is still my favorite out of all of my handguns, even my CZ P10c. The Steyr M9-A1 is the most underrated handgun out there. It is extremely ergonomic, accurate and reliable. The trigger on the Steyr comes close to the PPQ and P10c trigger. The only cons I have about the Steyr is that it is a bit heavy (Which can be considered a pro on the other hand) and that the serrations are a bit shallow.

I was able to pick up a hudson a while back. To those considering, for commonality sake I'd recommend that you get the steyr. But if I can say this, the Hudson although larger due to the 1911 grips, it's absolutely got a lower bore axis than the steyr. Also, look at them side by side, the Hudson isn't just the bore axis, it's the spring placement. The Hudson spring is directly in front of the trigger, and that directs more of the recoil straight back. Idk, just consider everything, especially since Hudson went bankrupt and never got to make a polymer frame.

Let me tell you about Hudson's custom service. My take down pin was hard to take out. I just got off a chat with Cy Hudson himself who walked me throught it. 6 to 6:30 pm (PST) and that 8 pm + in Temple, Texas where Hudson is located. Never had a CEO of a company communicate with me especially in real time....after business hours. If you look at other video's and Hudson Facebook group posts, he frequently chimes in. The ability to get in touch with the CEO is a huge plus in my book. I don't recall the last time the CEO from Sig, Wilson, or CZ messaged me in real time on an issue I was having. Oh, I needed more force to get the take down pin out.

Thanks for another good and useful review! It's not clear though: is the Hudson single action, with only the trigger safety? The Steyr is only partially cocked when racked, like a Glock, so it is always double action. Also, like the Glock, that front sight is SUPPOSED to appear high when you extend your arm, so that you never have to seek it out to aim it and can just drop it into its vision slot as a natural part of applying the trigger. Me much big like me Steyr……………………..elsullo

I like the comparison. No they aren't really in the same line of things, but first time I saw the Hudson.. Well it reminded me of the Steyer. I look at the Hudson as more of a nitch gun ,than something I would use for everyday. If the funds allowed for it, why not.. Every video I've seen.. It's obvious it handles recoil like no other! However, that's the thing..I kinda like a pistol that has some snap to it! It's why I enjoy shooting! For me the Steyr it's every bit of a unique design.... That I could still use as a serious defense weapon if, God forbid, I ever had to.

Thanks for another nice video. On the Steyr couldn't you buy a frame via an FFL and then change the chassis out? Kind of like an AR lower, or Glock frame? Of course assuming Steyr Maes frames available.

You could, theoreticaly do so yes. Steyr doesn't sell just the frame though. You might get in touch with Steyr USA and mention that as an idea. The CEO of the US branch wants to make Steyr a more advertised brand here in the states.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to the suitability of either of these pistols in a military environment? Too fragile?

I have the Steyr C-9 A-1. I have retired it to bedside protection only. The C-9 ejects the casing right back on to your upper torso. Steyr replaced the ejector. I still have the problem. There is nothing like having hot casing in shirt....

It's gotta be something with the size then, the Ms and Ls don't do that. I've only taken 1 casing to the face and it was from deflecting off the plexi at tge range. There are a lot of small tweeks and differences between the bigger modles and the smaler ones.

I would say the comparison isn't all that fair (because the Hudson is a high end boutique gun and its excellent) but the Steyr really holds its own against a gun that weighs almost twice and costs almost 3 times as much. I've been EDCing a Steyr M40 (pre A1 gun) since early 2001 ... for a while I swapped out an S40 as it carries a little better, but eventually returned to the M for the capacity. I wish they'd make the new OD Green M-A1 in .40 I'd have one in a heartbeat. I also suspect if I ever met Wilhelm Bubits and found that he'd left a pair of custom fit gloves laying around, I could probably steal them and know they'd fit me perfectly. He also designed the Caracal, but I won't buy one of them because they're made by people that want to murder me (and apparently the QC isn't all that good).

Thanks for another nice review. On the Hudson, did you notice any looseness of the barrel while the slide was in full battery? There is an H9 sitting at my LGS and I almost bought it until I noticed that in full battery I could move the barrel up and down by pressing on the barrel hood. I tried it in other guns at the store and at home and none of them have that play. Thoughts? Thanks!
