Lee makes handles for that mold! You need to scrub that mold with soapy water to remove the machining oil, and lube the alignment pins and sprue cutter pivot with 2 stroke oil. Preheat your mold blocks to 350F and run the pot temp up to 8 or 9 for pure lead. A little (1-3%) tin solder or pewter added to the lead will help it fill out the mold. You need to beware of lead exposure if you continue with lead shot. The dross (lead oxide powder) that you skim off the molten metal is particularly bad. Dispose of it carefully in the trash. Don’t touch your face and wash your hands after handling the lead. Consider powder coating your shot to reduce exposure as well. Come over to the Cast Boolits forum (it’ll pop up if you google it) for all your lead casting questions. Great folks, they’ll have you casting perfect shot in no time!

Great video! I've been using a .395 cal Lee double mold for making 10.03mm lead ammo (about 6g). Never seen the 357 cal molds so good to know! BTW you can get handles for the mold to open! Watch out for contaminates on your lead, get a old long metal spoon to lower in lead after the first melt. It's about 600 - 800oC in the pot, so water expand x1,600 on contact. Oil residue even more, so only takes tiny amout to splash some lead.

The waste cut off by the mold is called the sprue. I collect that on a small cookie sheet, and then they go back into the melt. The crap floating on top of the lead in your pot is called "dross" and is easily skimmed off with a steel spoon. I use an old METAL coffee can to collect the waste. If your lead is really dirty, you can clean it up by adding a bit of paraffin or sawdust to the melted lead and then skimming it off as dross. Keep ALL water away from your melting pot at all times. Work in a well ventilated area. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. If you wear a respirator, get one that actually mitigates lead fumes. If you use old tire weights in the melt, just know it's not pure lead, which is fine. I use it all the time. It has antimony in it, which makes the cooled ball harder but lighter than pure lead. If you dump into a plastic pail, add water so the lead quenches fast. This will make them harder also, all while not melting your bucket. For more info on casting, look at muzzleloader or reloading forums for help. Im getting to this video after two years since upload...you probably know all this by now...but i thought I'd chime in anyway.

The shooting distance in a slingshot tournament is 32 feet. Start close, say 10 feet and shoot at a 4 centimeter about 1.5 inches and when you can hit it 10 out of 10 times move back to 15 feet and so on. Until you can hit the target 10 out of 10 times from 32 feet away, and then you can hit anything.

Next time get your dad to ask at the garage when he’s there for service. They usually have tons of lead for balancing wheels, and they’re happy to get rid of it. The bad beads were probably not hot enough lead, or you need to preheat the mold (if it was mostly in the first batch or two) Also, make sure to wash your hands after using the lead balls. You really don’t want lead residue on your skin.

@dr.s.p.
@dr.s.p. Жыл бұрын
Preheating the mould and ensuring the metal is properly fluxed helps prevent deformities. I would also sincerely recommend wearing heavy duty appropriate eye protection and clothing to cast molten metals and not shorts, bare feet and thin short sleeved shirts. Just in case your hands burn and you reactively jump risking knocking or dropping molten metal over you. More a common sense recommendation so that others might learn after watching your presentation.

I am leary of using lead for game hunting, there is a reason it was banned for duck hunting, and shooters rarely handle the material, except when ingesting their game. If you are determined to do so, you might want to look into further precautions such as wearing gloves when handling the lead balls, oxide will over time probably contaminate your slingshots pouch. If it breaks the skin of your game, then that is another matter. You might want to look into that further. Really I would think twice about using lead at all, there are just too many downsides to its use. Stay safe friend....
