Egypt has been actively working to undermine and destabilize Ethiopia, hindering its development projects. This includes lobbying international lenders to deny Ethiopia loans, inciting internal conflicts, and obstructing Ethiopia's economic progress. Egypt often cites historical water share agreements from 1929 and 1959 with Sudan, which ignore Ethiopia's significant contribution (over 85%) to the Blue Nile River. These agreements excluded Ethiopia and other upstream countries. Despite Egypt's efforts to undermine it, Ethiopia has pressed on with the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa's largest hydroelectric power plant. Ethiopians are committed to advancing their nation and are prepared to defend against both internal and external threats. Egypt should abandon its outdated tactics and seek to apologize to Ethiopia, working towards mutual benefits instead of continuing to be a source of conflict. If Egypt persists, it risks becoming a long-term adversary to Ethiopia, especially given its historical support for Eritrea's separation. Ethiopia may take measures to penalize Egypt if these actions continue.

The internal problems of Somalia are more tense and fragile than those of Ethiopia, and they require urgent solutions without interference from Egypt, as this would only disintegrate the country. Let’s stick to the facts, Somaliland was formed and independent before it chose to have a union with Italian Somaliland which was a trust territory under Italian administration, the goal of British Somaliland was to help emancipate the Somalis. Unfortunately the short term democracy turned into a tribal dictatorship by the Darood clan, 1991 marks the civil war and Somaliland breaking away from the union which was illegal since it was unratified and only held together through military force. Everything I’ve said is fact, be honest with your self, you can fact check it and come back with a fact not emotional stories. Lastly the Somaliland government and its people are united, they were infiltrated by clan loyalist to neighbouring Somalia from the darood clan who wanted vengeance for Somaliland citizens breaking away from its oppressor and wanted to force control again. The citizens of Somaliland are united, the ones far east in lascanood town have been left in anarchy and the Somaliland government has clearly stayed calm waiting for the democratic elections to finish. A clear contrast to Somalia tribe based parliament which is causing them to split into Puntland & Somalia

First I would like to thank and respect the views, research findings and analysis of the respective panelists. I would also want to add the following points or reflections from my side: 1. The involvement of Egypt and Turkey in the Horn of Africa will further complicate the geopolitical challenges in the region. We have more external actors making decisions than the number of countries in the region 2. Leasing a land for naval access is not a new thing in the region. There are more than 12 external actors countries who have leased naval bases in Djibouti, Somalia, and Sudan. Why the issue becomes an international agenda when an African country leases a land from another African de facto country? 3. The involvement of Egypt and Turkey in the region will further support terrorist organizations access more weapons and ammunitions which further affect the maritime activities in the Red Sea and further expands the war between Israel, and the Arab world in the region such as Hamas in North Gaza, Hutties in Yemen, and Red Sea. So Egypt and Turkey’s involvement will further aggravate the regional and geopolitical conflict 4. The Western World is currently busy with other geopolitical issues such as China, Russia, Ukraine, and Elections. So the right regional actors need to urgently engage and participate before it’s too late 5. It would be good if you invite experts from Africa that would provide a different perspective on the topic 6. Finally, the issue of Somalia, Ethiopia, and Sudan should be handled and managed by the African Union not by Turkey or other external actors. I think those are some of the missing points from the panel discussion. Otherwise, it was a very good and eye opening panel discussion. Thanks for organizing this!

In this conversation, it is important to recognize that there are two white and two Arab individuals present, yet there is no representation from Ethiopia or Somalia. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has already been completed by Ethiopia, making it an irreversible reality. At this point, Egypt needs to come to terms with the dam's existence rather than continuing a path that could create a long-term adversary in Ethiopia. Any military action against the dam is not feasible due to the immense risk it poses. The water currently stored could devastate large portions of Sudanese and Egyptian society if the infrastructure is compromised, making such an approach unthinkable. As a critical source of the Nile, Ethiopia will always hold a position of influence. No military might can alter the fact that Ethiopia has control over the flow of the water and, hypothetically, could poison the water that 97% of Egypt depends on for its consumption. Finally, conflict is not a solution for anyone. Egypt's backing of Somalia in this dispute only serves to escalate tensions rather than promote peace and mutual understanding between the nations involved.

The most important issue is that Somaliland needs Ethiopia and vice versa. The so-called Somali government which has been propped up by outsiders for the last 33 years, has no authority outside the presidential compound, and ironically has to be given security by African forces. Somalia cannot wage war or do anything else. Any time a country wages war on a distant country, it tends to lose, case in point, the USA waging war in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia, therefore, if a war breaks out between Egypt and Ethiopia, Ethiopia will come out victorious.

Egypt's interest!? At the doorstep of Ethiopia?! Is that fair!? Or a power play!? Facts are Ethiopia historically won two wars against Egypt. Ethiopia knows how to fight AlShebab. Ethiopian soldiers paid their lives for the last 30 years to bring peace to somalia and protect Villa Somalia to become what is now. Egypt has been no where found to help Somalia all those years. Why is the mission of Egyptian soldiers to be part of African Union Forces to keep peace in Somalia turned to a posture to fight Ethiopia!? Egypt never asked Ethiopia's permission when built Aswan Dam. Egypt contributed zero drops to Nile River. Egypt for centuries has been sabotaging the use of Nile to electrify Ethiopia. Ethiopia is saying clear and loud - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

The Nile River has long been dominated by Egypt, often to the detriment of Ethiopia, the source of the Blue Nile, which contributes over 85% of the Nile's water flowing to downstream countries like Sudan and Egypt. For years, Egypt has actively worked to stifle Ethiopia's economic development by collaborating with international lenders to block loans for Ethiopian projects. Despite these obstacles, including Egypt's efforts to fuel internal conflicts within Ethiopia and the eventual secession of Eritrea, Ethiopia remained determined to build the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Ethiopia has the undeniable right to utilize its own resources, including its water resources. Egypt's longstanding hostile approach toward Ethiopia, including its attempts to sabotage Ethiopia’s development, may ultimately backfire. Ethiopians are fully prepared to defend their nation against any threats, both internal and external. Egypt should acknowledge and apologize for the harm it has inflicted on Ethiopia over the centuries. As a nation heavily reliant on the Nile, Egypt must reconsider its actions toward Ethiopia or risk exacerbating its own challenges in the future.

Somalia have more than 1600 kilometres of border with Ogaden region in Ethiopia. There are more than 10 million ethnic Somalis in Ogaden region and Somalia government can easily operate in that region through proxy groups to support local freedom fighters in Ogaden, Oromia and Amhara regions. We hope Abiy Ahmed to respect Somalia's unity and territorial integrity to avoid unnecessary regional conflict in the horn of Africa

This time is different because the fragile Ethiopian state is weaker and more divided than ever before. Don't forget Somalia overthrowed Mengistu Haile Mariam regime by helping OLF, TPLF, EPLF and ONLF. All that was before Somalia"s 1991 civil war. Right now Somalia recovered from civil war in some extent and ready to defend its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity

If Egypt starts to use any force, then Ethiopia has every right to diverge nile water from flowing to its regular course.

As soon as I saw the faces of people that'll be covering this program I instantly knew it won't be the true representation of facts. Imagine having a Nigerian a Ghanaian and someone from morroco extensively covering the war between Ukraine and Russia??😅😅

Ethiopia in the name of peace keeping has been working to destabilise more and more, by selling Arms to Alshabab, different clans and tribes, because peace keeping is a hard currency income for Ethiopia and the Generals smuggling goods from ports to Ethiopia, other reason was if Somalia united and stability this makes strong to reclaim Ogaden which is part of Somalia. This strategy is backed by the West in general and the US in particular.

Ethiopia will continue to dam its own Abbay River. Egypt can do zero as far as war on the ground is concerned. Egypt needs to look after its own Raffa border if they have balls.

The Egyptians have made a stupid mistake by sending their troops into Somalia. They can’t bully Ethiopia to scum into their demands on the construction and operation of the GERD. Despite their involvement in the internal affairs of Ethiopia for centuries, they have not understood the emotional reaction of the Ethiopians towards Egypt seen by many as the historical enemy.

Ethiopian and Somalia have more close ties than Egypt. The here was Egypt in the past 40 years when Somalia went through horrific civil war starvation? Ethiopian are the one that have been the peace keepers that help Somalia in everything it can. Today Egyptian bully government trying to act as his former colonizers trying to tell not only Ethiopia the surrounding countries how much water they’re allowed to use. It’s ridiculous so much can you let your cattle’s drink or that much for this no you can touch the water. God forbid imagine if the water was Egypts they’ll let everyone starve as they have done close to a century against Ethiopia. Who doesn’t remember Ethiopian starvation in 70’s & 80’s. That’s due to Egyptian governments using the colonial era agreements wouldn’t allowed Ethiopia to use water resources within Ethiopian boundaries. How dare you! This’s 21st century no one can bully around anyone. Ethiopian government have time after time the dam will not affect either Sudan nor Egypt but Egypt regardless of facts on the ground refusing to agree. What options does Ethiopia have got. 3years a go Egypt tried to use the Sudanese government to invade Ethiopia even trained Sudanese military Sudan till today have invaded parts of northern Ethiopia. Now Sudan is a mess thanks to Egypt trying to use the next proxy. The dam is almost completed let alone a shortage of water anyone can look the flood the Sudan is suffering from thousands of houses washed away people have died. This has happened for years it continues to happen. But at this point for anyone it should be cleared Egypt is pure and simple against Ethiopian development as they were for centuries. Their recent propaganda is so embarrassing to galvanize other Arab Muslim countries they’re saying Israel is putting military bases to fight against Palestinians from the Horn of Africa. This’s the type of lie Egypt spits out they say Israel has given Ethiopia the iron dome is the other one. This’s the most dangerous propaganda that anyone can make up. Egypt show us do you have a water shortage, electricity? Why’s the water is overflowing to Mediterranean Sea if Egypt wasn’t having more than enough. Egypt’s jus a pure bully to provoke war to hide its internal conflict.

Very interesting debate and well presented. It is a fact that this part of wirkd is becoming hot contesting geopolitical spot for different nations with a different interest. But Ethiopia and Somaliland are adement to implement this MOU. I think MOU is a reviving that historical international agreement of 1897 treaty, well known , Rodd treaty. Thanks for your well-educating debate. Nasir Ghalib @NasirGhalib1.

Turkey has built dams and irrigation projects on Euphrates and Tigris rivers that have significantly reduced the water flow downstream to Syria, and Iraq. No one is talking about Turkey but why you are complaining too much about Ethiopian dam which only to generate electricity not irrigation.

Fyi: Somaliland has a distinct history , it gained its independence from Uk while Somalia from Italy. This current status Somaliland is a defacto country, while to be a dejure is her ultimate goal. It united the south but that has lead a catastrophe for her and pulled out the union in 1992. Lastly, SL has the right to have intl agreement, like Ethiopia and alike. We welcome
Territorial water of Somalia trying to annexe by Ethiopia here, and the panel have not talked about directly rather talked about other countries wishes right or wrong. But this is an aggression against Somalia by its neighbour Ethiopa, so what are we talking about and to whom its stake? I found it difficult to the point of analysis without the bigger issue of the matter, the mou.
