This video was shot at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (Santa Cruz, CA) in 1984. A few friends and I were "extras" in this video as we used to travel from San Jose to Santa Cruz every weekend to try and meet girls. We appear in a few shots on the beach and on the boardwalk. It was fun and the band gave us a concert at night at the small amphitheater on the boardwalk. Great days back then!!

I was working at a Country Club in Indianapolis when they were touring “Sports”. Huey and the band came there in the afternoon and played golf. He stayed after and signed autographs and then came up to me and gave me an envelope. He asked me to give what was inside to whoever the right people were. It had 20 tickets and 20 backstage passes to that nights concert at MSA. He sat with us after the show and I will tell you that he and the band were some of the coolest, most down to earth people you could ever meet!!! Great reaction, as always!!👏

I can verify that assessment. Also close to that the same time, but just before Sports came out, I briefly met and talked to Huey, who I found to be extremely affable and genuine. I told him how much I loved the song 'Do You Believe In Love', and he said something like, "Oh man, thank you so much - that's great to hear." Then I hung out with the News (sans Huey) backstage after their concert... indeed, very cool guys, and even they talked about how nice a guy Huey was. :-)

I was a P.A. on the Music Video - It Was shot at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk! I toted the Phonebooth from Monterey to the Santa Cruz Beach by myself in a truck. Also in the scene where the guys are buried in the sand - I was assigned to fan the flies off them. The best part was when they were dressing the "Fortune teller" scene up on the Boardwalk - the guys broke into A cappella do wop songs while waiting to shoot the scene. It was so magical that a lot of the crew just stopped what they were doing until the AD came over and told everyone to get back to work! I heard that song in playback so many times over the three days that I couldn't stand to hear it...and the song took off. I couldn't hear it without cringing for a couple of years. Nope - no cell phones. This was the summer of 1984.

@Steve Klemetti we just used the beach along with everyone else. As to the guys in the sand, they dug a “bench” in the sand for the guys. They sat in it, had a sheet of plywood with cutouts for their necks and put sand over the board. About 10 minutes at a time was the longest they were subjected to being “under the sand”. It was a hot day and this bit took a long time to get. Mario was actually smoking the cigarette…I don’t know how he could stand it. He didn’t have to. This was my first pro production job a week before I graduated UCSC. A nice start.

No one did this sort of neo-doo-wop like HLATN. Other artists did ‘50s-style music early in the decade, but they never quite nailed it like they did, not even Billy Joel. HLATN’s videos were fun consistently, as the entire band was always part of the action, beyond just playing instruments, and I suspect Huey insisted on that.

The Ocean will ultimately draw everyone back to it, it invokes calm and the fact that we humans are small and have no power over anything. Thanks Jamal, you hit the nail on the head. No one ever looks to the 80's where lots of music samples.

My Huey Lewis stories. Lived in Marin county in the 80's and 90's when his band was hot. I dated his hairdresser for many months and she told me her stories. Saw him several times in stores and such. Here is mine. I was driving to a concert at the Concord Pavillion to see Dire Straits. As we pulled into the several lanes to get into parking lot, we pull up along side Huey in the car to our left. Huey in the front passenger seat. Drummer driving. They looked stoned as hell. Huey has his right hand up to his face, and his pointer finger is BURIED up to the second knuckle in his NOSE! Digging deep he was! I told our car to look, then i yelled real loud, "HUEY!" He looked startled, looked to his right, with his finger in his nose, shocked! Funny as hell!!! Oh, yeah, Dire Straits KILLED IT!
