April 1993, Salt Lake International Airport. I was returning to California from Sicily after a three-year assignment with the Navy, and a rare time I was traveling in uniform. In the airport snack bar line waiting to pay for breakfast I heard this very familiar voice right behind me telling the cashier he was buying breakfast for the two people ahead of him... myself and an elderly lady. I turned around to thank him, and standing there was Huey Lewis. Got to talk to him for a few minutes before he had to join his party to board his airplane. Really nice person, more interested in knowing about me and my service than about answering questions about himself.

On June 30, 1984, I was at Huey Lewis and the News' concert in Grand Rapids, MI. Huey announced to the audience that that night for the first time they had topped album charts with "Sports." That was one of the highlights of my concert life.

Probably the best record of the 1980's. Played it in a band, always got the people on the dance floor within seconds. Huey's on harmonica

This song always reminds me of a time my wife and I were in a bar with a dance floor and a DJ but nobody was dancing. My wife said she could get people up to dance and walked up to the DJ and requested this song. She was right. Everybody got up to dance.

The video (it's the one with a pic of Huey in black and white) has some great snippets of vintage rockers doin' their thing, and some great sense of humor injected from Huey and the boys. I'm sure you'll get recommendations for their many hits, but maybe not this one..."Bad is Bad"

Easy to see how they had the most group number ones and highest overall album sales in the 1980s. They’re a blast (especially live). Edit: and often times at venues with plastic seat backs, everyone will clap to the heartbeat sound on the seat in front them.

"The oboe may be barely breathing but, the heart of rock and roll is still beating!" I love that line! It's funny to me because the oboe isn't used outside of orchestras and talking about it barely breathing is a double entendre because you use your breath to play that double reed woodwind instrument.

Back to the Future song was "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News. Huey played the part of the teacher who said to Marty his band was too loud while auditing for the talent show. But it was Huey's own damn song...great joke for those who knew it was Huey playing that part.

Strangely enough, Huey Lewis & the News is kinda underrated among 1980s bands. Somehow, they were never considered "serious," although the music is great. Another great song by Huey Lewis and the band is "I Want a New Drug"... terrific lead guitar playing and the song has a good message.

I like to play this song as the last half of a duet- but, first, I play "Rock and Roll is here to stay" by Danny and the Juniors (1958). I like to think that Huey is just proving Danny's point... "Rock and roll is here to stay- it will never die..."

If you get a chance, check out the music video. It's great! The "stutter" (dit-dit-dit) was a nod to the doo-wop of the fifties, sounds like to me.

Hey, Angela. This song from their Sports album was one that really helped kick the 8o's into high gear. The natural follow-up to this is I WANT A NEW DRUG. Music used to be more regional and came together to represent all of America. It still exists but not as much as in the past. Too much computer, stale, sterilized nonsense without much meaning unless you still listen to the categories that matter. Part of what was lost is the ability to communicate words, feelings, and playing instruments to convey the emotion between musicians and the audience. I see the proof on your face every time you react to the voices, the sax, harmonica, guitars, and choruses in the music. Which is what is severely lacking in today's landscape. It's really a shame. Keep going and enjoy the music.

If you want 5 solos in one song, I suggest Clutch's Electric Worry. I won't tell you what they are, you'll have to just watch, listened and I promise you'll love it. Darlin, after you hear Electric Worry, 24M Views on KZbin, you're going to be hooked!🤘 😎I've been a fan of Clutch since '90 before they got signed. You want great music. Take a listen. Trust me darlin, I do SGT Rock's Headbangers Ball on Rumble and Clutch is on every show. A+ List rotation, been DJ'ing for 35 years, so I wouldn't steer you wrong!
