I grew up in Northern Virginia near Fort Belvoir's Davidson airfield in the early 70's. Heard that distinct sound daily. Few helicopters have that sound.

In 1975 I did 5 Parachute Jumps from a Huey with the 173rd Airborne. An exchange with my British Airborne Regiment. Never to be forgotten. Being used to jumping at 600ft, it was fantastic to jump at 3,000ft. Time to look round and enjoy it. Larger US Parachutes as well. Slower decent. A swap of badges etc. I still have them., and a Ka-Bar.

My very first helicopter ride when I was 7 years old was in a Huey. This bird will always be my absolute favorite, and nothing else will ever come close. The coolest sound in the world comes from this bird. It is the one aircraft where when you hear it, you know exactly what it is.They say you could put a million bullet holes in this thing during Vietnam & it would keep on flying.

I was a Sea Knight crew chief in the Corps and have a t-shirt that says, "even a deaf Marine can hear a Sea Knight coming from a mile away". I'm sure the crew of a Huey feels the same way as we do for our beloved Phrog...........even if it was replaced by the Osprey after 25 years in development

My brother in law served two tours in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne, and they were airlifted into action aboard Hueys. Although it's been decades since then, he said he gets a good feeling when he hears a Huey's familiar sound overhead. He said it reminds him of those times when he and his unit were all together headed into the field.

Worked at Hooper stage field at Fort Rucker, 69-70. Sometimes I would sit on the Hobart (APU) when the civilian maintenance man would plug in the Huey's to start them between training pilot exchanges. The real treat was the Warrant Officers graduation fly over coming down the Ozark road entrance to the fort, at least 4 dozen of them in a formation. Talk about a sound. Mostly D models. Almost forgot, 'Above the Best'
