Hi guys, hope you are doing great! Lithophanes are back! To welcome the new year I've been working on spherical lithophanes, so instead of just 3D printing a flat image, I'm now attaching the picture to a sphere! I found the world map to be a perfect picture, and a perfect match for this project. Here's my result guys, hope you'll like it!
The 3D printed lithophane was printed in 94h, using white PLA filament. Can you use other filament colors? Yes you can but white will look the best.
The 3D printer used in this video was the Creality CR-10S, it's probably my favourite printer at the moment. If you want to know more which 3D printer to pick you can check out my latest comparison video: • MASSIVE 3D Printer Com...
Or check out the CR-10S here: goo.gl/zhGN51
Ethan Nan who helped me understand the 3DS Max software, check out more of his work here👇

Is there a way to get the texture on the inside so it looks like a smooth ball until you turn it on?
@vikingbeast7744
@vikingbeast7744 5 жыл бұрын
Just put the map on the inner ball. It would be like what he did, but turning the whole globe inside out. I would think it would still show the map once lit up. The wall is so thin, the map might still be a little viewable with out a light. This is just my opinion, I haven't tried it..

NCZIOOX just take a sphere and use that to cut into it, in a cad program, just make sure it’s not to thick and that it’s slightly bigger than the other one so that it cuts the inside, but you will have to use an inverted map to start with other wise it will end up looking the opposite

Can you design it in the inverse? Not sure what the proper term is. But basically, have the outer edge of the sphere smooth, and the layers are going inwards. So when the light is off, it just looks like a smooth sphere, but when it's on, you get the map showing through still because it'll still be varying levels of thickness?
@ryamoo

Valsotevs true. I might see if I can try it eventually, but at a much smaller scale so I don't waste so much filament if it doesn't work

I imagine some detail will get lost this way
@scythe3000
@scythe3000 6 жыл бұрын
That's a really neat idea - you may want to consider printing it "upside down" with the northern hemisphere on the print bed since the majority of the landmass is up here and therefore detail that would otherwise be printing in mid air on the underside of the upper portion
@AGoldSoldier
@AGoldSoldier 6 жыл бұрын
ryamoo Ignoring the difficulty of a print like that, it would work! ... Mostly Having printed quite a few lithophanes, detail is lost when you shine the light in reverse. The image still appears, but if your light isn't _just_ right it gets fuzzy. It would work pretty well with simple patterns or images, but don't expect a perfect work of art

As the ocean covers like 80% of the globe (rough estimate, too lazy to look it up), printing it as the thin part could save up some time and material. Anyway, pretty cool project, going to get some whit pla and play with litophanes too. Slovakia btw :)

Hey - it’s me from Germany 😅 I also printed something similar - I printed the moon - actually it came out very well but when I do put a light into it, I can see the single layers and they actually are more visible than the moon structure - any tips - or are the layers also visible on your print and it’s normal?
@cosmedeoliveira
@cosmedeoliveira 4 жыл бұрын
Printing the moon was my first idea too. Do you have you photo file available somewhere? Regarding your layers being visible, I would probably try to use thinner layers and increase the hot end temperatures, so that the layers would stick better to each other (I also think that printing ABS with overheated nozzle might bring a better finishing)

The USA. Specifically Michigan, which is one of the few states it's easy to spot on a map with no borders drawn (✋). I'd kind of like to see the hole in the north pole being used intentionally, with this globe used as a shade for a hanging light instead of a lamp.
