Brian Henson is not only chairman of the board at The Jim Henson Company, he's cofounder and chairman of the company Dopl, which creates next-level 3D-printed miniatures of people and pets. How is it different from other personalized figurine manufacturers? To show him just that, Brian and Dopl cofounder and CEO Michael Anderson take Adam behind the scenes of their Brooklyn factory, where Adam works on (and breaks) his own figurine ... and learns just how difficult -- but exciting! -- it is to bring inanimate objects to life (not unlike Brian's OTHER job).

Wow so they’re really charging for the material here more than the labor, that’s honestly so crazy to me. There were a lot of people working there and it MUST take more work to do a batch of 24 4” figures than 6 14” figures. I wonder if maybe they need to restructure their pricing unless the materials really are that expensive.

The model was used as part of the shop display (featuring other customers, too, not just me), and after a few months we were invited to come and collect our model. I was wearing an unflattering Tron costume, but knew it would make for a hilarious keepsake to get that 3D scanned. I was planning on coming back the next day with my Planet of the Apes costume, but never got around to it. But I'm super happy I did the Tron one, cause it's sooo funny, and what better memory to capture than something that was totally on a whim. And yeah, the detail caught where the zipper was broken, also caught the change in colour where my boxers stopped and skin tone started. I got one of those done, at a similar scale, in 2015 at the local (Dallas) ComiCon/Fan Expo, wearing my Starfleet uniform. Some time before that, I read an article on how to make a 3D photo booth for your 3D printer. I think it used the then-popular game controller as a 3D scanner, with the subject standing on a turntable. The one I used was photometric _only_ as far as I could tell. It didn't have anything that appeared to be a 3D scanner, and I think it was a bit early to have time-of-flight detectors that looked like regular camera lenses. It had several cameras at different heights on a mast, and revolved that around the subject.

This should totally become the new trend. Everybody needs their own Dopl just like everybody needed their own Tamagotchi, scanning centers opening up in cities across the country to fulfill the demand. Like real life 3D Snapchat bitmojis or something.

I am from the UK and really wish we had something like this here, but as far as I am aware, this stuff does not exist here (and if it does, it would be extremely expensive). The closest I can think of is those 3D laser-cubes where they take any photograph of you, make it 3D and then burn that into a CUBE making a cool 3D Sculpture inside the cube, but these cost a lot and as cool as they are, they are not as cool as this (yet cost way more than this). This is one of those things wear I wish you could scan yourself in using Lidar/ToF or something on a phone, send it to them and they do thew rest, allowing anyone across the globe to get a chance.

Just saw the dopl website. The prices are very reasonable and the quality and accuracy is outrageous. Everyone should get this done.

This is so cool! I may have to run down to L.A. and do one, a couple hundred bucks doesn't seem too bad.

I thought the print and prep would be easier, and they'd be much more expensive. But it's much more work-intensive, and less expensive than imagined.

This brings back memories. I worked on a similar process and with that printer model in college. If they opened a shop in Seattle I would applying for a job right now.

If they opened a shop in Seattle, I'd make the 2-hour drive there just for the sole purpose of buying one. In a heartbeat.

Fun Fact: the french cartoonist Franquin, who did the comic Spirou in the 50s and 60s, once made a story about when Spirou's friend Fantasio encounters a photography store where he gets a miniature copy of himself made in a very similar way. And this cartoon was made in the 50s!!! When I first read that cartoon in the 80s I thought it was too far out to ever happen for real, but here we are now...

The idea of being able to show your children the various stages of their growth (yearly or so) is a very very cool idea. Their fades, phases, hairstyles, and so on. Things like height can be very hard to represent in photos, as they are taken at different distances, etc. SO COOL!
