Elijah Bernard & his wife Annie Belle (Williams, married 21 Oct 1912) lived at 1303 Pou St., Columbus on 12 Sept 1918 when he signed his WWI draft registration card. He was a helper in the steel car gang of the Central of Georgia Railroad yard in Columbus, age 33, born 2 Jun 1885, tall, medium build, African American (found on Ancestry). His GA death certificate says he was born in Midland, GA, son of Harry & Bettis Bernard, died of typhoid fever on 28 Nov 1918. He was buried at the Midland Cemetery on 1 Dec 1918. John L. Dennis was the undertaker.

That is what I found as well though you have more detail. So, the cemetery is likely Midland Cemetery.

@@1969floridagirl I agree. Segregation was the norm back in 1918 in Georgia. The Cemetery likely had slaves, former slaves and free people. Additionally some may have been Native American.

The car is a 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 2 door. The more rare 63A body style. Born in Detroit and delivered to a dealership in Jackson Mississippi in late November of 1958 and purchased by a young man for his new wife as a Christmas gift in late December. They drove it many years and sold it to a uncle in Alabama where he and the car went missing soon after. That would have been 1968 or 69? That’s about all I could come up with, sorry it wasn’t more.

Elijah Bernard was born 2 June 1885 in Georgia. He was the son of Harry Bernard and lived in Columbus, Georgia. His wife was Annie Bell Williams. He was African American. He worked as a Street Car Department Laborer. He died in 1918 as his marker indicates. The death certificate locates his burial place as "Midland Cemetery". That may be the name and likely due to the era, a largely African American burial place. My source is FamilySearch for the draft card WW1, and the death Certificate virtual image.

They actually do that in my town here in New England...our cemetery starts at 1665...up until today. The kids love all the soldiers from way past wars....it is so interesting. Indian River Cemetery. Clinton CT

My neighbors and I, and about 4 friends found roughly 200+ graves where there was initially about 25 marked. On my neighbors' property across the street from me, there were 4 Civil War markers with their respective military units engraved on the headstones. What an amazing find. We're still working on it. The plant vine you found is vinca. It has a purple flower on it, with a white cross in the middle, to remind them of their religion. Slaves planted it on family graves, as usually they weren't allowed headstones to mark graves. I encountered this a lot in Virginia.

I think an abandoned, forgotten cemetery is just about the saddest thing ever. It's just a shame that the knowledge of all these loved ones was not able to be carried on to the present generations. These cemeteries need to be preserved and protected. The people buried there deserve the dignity of remembrance.

My grandpa name is Frank Davis. I know my ancestors came from Virginia, Tennessee and NC area. I’m not sure where y’all are at, but it’s pretty cool! I stumbled across this video by accident, this was such a cool adventure you guys did. Those graves are some ones father, mother so many years ago. I live in Michigan, was born in 1944, dad was full German, his parents immigrated from Germany in late 1800's. There used to be an old cemetery near Vicksburg Mi. off a dirt road, that mom and dad would visit in the late 1940's to early 1950's. I remember some of the head stones, as there were trees there I would climb. A few years ago I thought about that cemetery, and tried to find it again, I learned it used to be called: Saint Johns German Luthern, or just Hassic Cemetery. I never could find the cemetery, as it may be on, or a part of private property now. There are houses now where the cemetery might have been. I stopped and asked a man who was in his yard about the Hassic cemetery, he said he had the house built 20 years ago, and never heard of that cemetery, end of story.

Is there a place you go to officially report and document the existence of the cemetery? Does anyone go and study the area, plot the gravesites on a map and make an official record (just in case the golf course finds itself in need of an "expansion"?!

They will do more research themselves then get with the right authorities. The authorities will take it from there normally. I'm guessing there will be a couple more episodes or videos on this particular cemetery before they are done walking through it. So stay on the lookout for that 😉

If you have the GPS location, can you go to the county property appraiser office and get the section, township and range and research the records backwards to find out what was on the property 100 or more years back? I know a lot of historical records are gone forever, but seems like there should be a paper trail in land documents. Love your videos!

At the 9 minute mark, you show a burial slab for Elijah Barnard, he was a Black man, born June 2, (1885) not 1883. He died Nov 27, 1918. He was drafted Sept 12, 1918. two months later he was killed. Died Nov 27, 1918 during WW I, at the age of 33 years. He was a tall black man of medium build, he had brown eyes and black hair. He worked for the Georgia Rail Road. He was married to Anne Belle Williams Barnard. They were married Oct 21, 1912 This information comes from his Draft Card. US. World War I Registration and other sources. Something tells me we haven’t seen the last of that abandoned car you discovered..Looks like a awesome salvage and restoration project. Are you familiar with the national group called Friends Of Abandoned Cemeteries? I discovered many stray gravestones while wandering through the woods here in Staten Island,NY. as a kid.I contacted FOAC where they documented and have volunteers who maintain any newly discovered/unknown graveyards.You both have a knack for identifying “indentions”.There is a website I can share with you that’s called ariel views..It’s views taken from aircraft during the works project act FDR adopted as getting people to work.It shows airel views which many times old home sites are discovered but I’m thinking it may be great for finding old abandoned cemeteries such as this.Now if the you type in the name of the town and nearest road it gives you airel views dating back from the 1930’s,40’s,50’s up to present day.Im not sure if I share the link they may take down my entire comment,YT is notorious for doing that.

Elijah Barnard was 35 when he passed. 1918 is death year born 1883. That flowering plant, if it blooms blue, is called Star of Bethlehem and is often found in Moravian cemeteries in NC.

On Elijoh (sic) Barnard's death certificate it states that he died in 1918 (you were right!)'of typhoid fever at the age of 33. A week later another Elijah Barnard was born in Muscogee County. A son or grandson? I couldn't find Frank Davis's information. Both men were African American.

To me it is so sad to see an abandoned cemetery and they seem to be in every community, town and city in America. Thank you both for making these findings a part of your channel. I am nearing 80 yrs. and I remember from my childhood my grandmother going to every cemetery with paper flowers she had hand made to put on her relatives graves. My dad is 85. His whole life he's had a nickname he has no memory of how he got it. I waited too long to get curious about it and now I cannot, yet, find anyone who knows. I've begged him to write on all his family pictures who are the people, the date as best he can, etc. He is the last one alive who knows this and I have a huge passion for genealogy. Thank you. Jill

Frank Davis wife is Malindy...he had 3 children Frank Jr, Evans and Bishop.. He was a black male who owned his own farm in Bozemans, Georgia.

There many many old forgotten cemeteries around where I live in Middleboro Mass. And in surrounding towns. There is a ton of history surrounding this area dating back to the early 1600's. My neighbor's farm house was built in 1657. It was one of three not burned down by the wampanoag indians during King Phillips war. The residents were sympathetic to the Native Americans and they left each alone.

Oh my days! Seeing this video brought back a memory that I thought had been a simple nightmare!! There was an old, abandoned graveyard near my cousins’ house and all the neighbor kids would go down there to see what was to see. (I was about 9 at the time.). There was a large monument over one of the graves and my older sister dared me to climb up on it, even though it was cracked and half caved in. Well, not to be a scaredy-cat, I did it……and yes. The side I climbed up on fell into the grave hole below. They had to run home and admit to being there, telling mama I was IN the grave and the fire department showed up and got me out. I was so terrified I couldn’t even talk! It took months for me to recover completely and then my sister began convincing me it was just a nightmare and no need to worry. I will never again forget how absolute my terror was!! And the smell! To this day I can’t handle the smell of musty ground. UGH!! I bet I have brand new nightmares tonight! But this is a GREAT video and I’m a brand new subscriber. I love the ease with which you talk to “us” as if we were all right there beside you! Well done and bless you both for bringing the long-forgotten dead back to the light. I wonder why the graveyard was just abandoned?

We have some Graves like those with the concrete slabs poured over them here in southern Indiana. Most of them had died from the influenza of 1918 and they sealed them with those concrete like that because they were afraid that it would spread from the dead bodies

The car looks like a Mercury Monterey, they had a slanted power rear window... A buddy of mine owned one when we were still in highschool. I remember a trip we once took to Panama City Beach Florida. While riding on the beach, two of us would sit on the back panel, arms up on the roof, facing forward outside of the car...We thought we were cool 😎🌞 I live in my home county of Marion County Ga... But I lived in Muscogee County Ga in my younger years... Thanks for sharing and for what you do out there...
