An Akita saved my dog's life. I was at a friend's house and would bring my happy little cocker spaniel with me every time I visited every week or so. The Akita and my dog got along becuase the Akita loved everyone and every thing. He would gently play with my dog who he could literally throw into the next state if he chose but he was gentle. One visit 3 vicious (they were mistreated) pits broke into my friend's yard and went for my dog. The Akita fought off all 3 of them allowing my Cocker to hide. Akita needed a lot of stitches and was very sore, but I brought him a big meaty bone every time I visited to Thank him for saving my dog. ❤

As someone who worked for a good while at an animal shelter, I do find your point about adopting big dogs very interesting and absolutely valid. All dogs deserve loving homes, and it's sad that they get adopted way less than small dogs, but it's better than being adopted by someone who doesn't have enough time to deal with the dog's background and cause an accident that might hurt others AND the dog.

@ohdeer-sabrina81322 жыл бұрын
@@loralieisa I'm glad you found good pets! Big dogs can be amazing to own, specially when you have the proper time to take care of them. I think the biggest problem with adopting from a shelter, regardless of the size of the dog, is that their personality might change A LOT after getting adopted. When they go to a safe place, and a house where they get the attention they were lacking at a shelter, their true nature shows way more. Which means a really quiet dog at a shelter can turn into an energy ball after adopted, because all that quietness was more due to being worried or scared, rather than being the dog's personality. And that's a much bigger problem when we're talking about big breeds, since the unpredictability is way more dangerous in them than in a small breed.

He always knew if I was sick or sad and did his best to comfort me. He was my lifeline and I miss him terribly. ❤ But you are right about adult rescues. Shelters don't always have the right people on staff or the right knowledge about a breed to really say what their temperament will be like in your home. They said my Akita mix was dog friendly. They were SO wrong. He was just very sick and very traumatized. He was not okay with any dog in his bubble.... but would cuddle with our cats and LOVED our guinea pigs. We saw his true behavior about a month in and that's something you have to be ready for and committed to when adopting. If you're experienced and ready for the surprises - do it! I've spun Samoyed blown coat, and it makes a fluffy yarn like Angora. Wonderful! You have to blend it with some wool so it stays together without overtwisting and stays soft, but most undercoat from longer-haired dogs makes beautiful yarn. As to the inevitable question almost everyone asks, "Won't my whatever smell like dog when it gets wet?" Uh, does your wool sweater smell overwhelmingly like sheep if it gets wet? Well, then. The yarn has been washed at various stages of spinning, maybe dyeing, and when being blocked to shape after the item is finished. It's as clean as can be! It would only start smelling like unwashed dog if it was still attached to the dog. 😁

The original Akita ken (japanese Akita) was a dog bred specifically for hunting bear and large japanese game. However they are also a fighting dog breed which is why they have high levels of aggression towards other dogs. They were very popular for dog fighting until they were replaced by the Tosa Inu. The American Akita came into fruition from american troops being station in japan, and in wanting to bring these dogs back to the states crossed them with german shepherds and other military working dog breeds. During their intial conception, they were used for a variety of tasks (Military, police, etc). But today they find themselves to be mainly a companion as their more independent nature most people aren't willing to work with. Some american Akita facts! Kuma videos make me happy and I hope one day these guys will be used for more work again, they really are a wonderful breed.

There were actually two main lines/types of Akita Inu in Japan when the breed was reformed after WWII. One of them, with the tight skin and limits on coloration and the more Spitz like and foxy looks, became more popular in Japan and became the Akita Inu or Japanese Akita we know today. The other (Dewa) type, larger heavier and more bear like, became the American Akita, with the masks and looser skin and all colors allowed. Both types of dog existed in Japan *before* coming to America, and while some were out crossed in Japan for survival during and after WWII, I have never heard this that they were cross bred here in the US. I suppose it is possible, but it wasn't necessary to create the differences you see between American Akitas and Akita Inu. That has to do with the divide in Japan itself and what dogs GIs brought back. (Generally when you look at what dogs came from Japan at this time you will see it was the less desirable ones, from the Japanese pov, were sold to GIs, this explains the dental issues in the Shiba and quite possibly why we had the descendants of the Dewa type here. I think the American Akita is just as neat, tho.)

@@stellangios thanks so much for the additional stuff! It's been awhile since read about the Nihon Ken, especially the Akita. They got such and interesting history.

Fighting blood is a problem, because fighting breeds inevitably prioritize "gameness", i.e. a natural love of fighting over obedience. There are attack dogs and guard dogs too, but they are trained to fight when their owners order them to, which is much harder to train and restricted to a single owner. Breeders of fighting dogs want a semi-feral animal they can sell to an aspiring dogfighter and have him throw it in the ring without any real training and have it go wild. They also call it "natural aggression".

We have an Akita Inu. We got him while stationed in Japan. The American Akitas have other breeds mixed into them, so there are quite a few differences between the original Japanese breed and the American breed, but the temperaments overall seem similar. Ours is so gentle with our family and not agressive per se, but is protective of us. Thank you for educating people about the breed. They are definitely not for everyone.

They vary in personality. My friend's family had one that was very smart, very friendly, but if we were out in the yard and someone tried to get to close to us that she didn't know, she would stand out front and make it very clear they were not welcome near the children. When she passed on, the same breeder offered a nearly adult sibling who had been given back for not having the breed standard temperament. She was the sweetest little derp ever and just loved everyone.

You make a great point about not knowing an animals full temperament when you adopt -- and it applies to cats, too. My cat (bless her furry little brain) was an angel in the shelter... but once home, she turned out to be extremely aggressive around opposite sex animals, no matter the male's temperament. Definitely puts a damper on my dream of fostering other cats or taking her out around my friend's pets, but I made a commitment to keeping her her, no matter her attitude.

Don't be delusional. Akita's are one of the most aggressive dangerous dogs out there. They were bred for bear hunting, not for house pets. There's a reason they are on a lot of banned lists. Unlike some bully breeds which are wrongly classified, the Akita most certainly deserves that classification. I would never trust that breed.
