I've seen couple of emp players using those so called "trash" arena gears as placeholders for units that are either niche or just there as placeholder. I do agree that the weird substat mixed on those pieces along with horribly low rolls are kind of not worth it for some prices.

I disagree on your take about new player getting non 88 gear If you want to progress faster, its better to buy 88 gear or even stamina, they probably trash it after a week of playing. But if you dont care about progress and just wanna chill, ignore what im saying
