In Florida we have the Bald Cypress. Bald because they loose their green needles on the winter. They are mostly used for out buildings fence board, boat trailer bunks then covered with carpet. I imagine cypress planks would make good floor boards but not to walk around in stocking or bare feel unless you sand it first. Cypress is no good for fence posts, the posts will rot off at the ground in one year. In the 70's a lot of the trees were cut just for that bell at the bottom. the bell was cross cut into 4" slabs and used as table tops, the smaller in diameter were cut into 2 inch slabs and used for clocks. After they were cut and prepared for table tops or clocks they were covered in a thick layer of 2 part polyurethane. The knees were stripped of bark and coated in the same way then uses as decorative pieces. The cypress boards that are available around me are usually rough cut and a 1" board is 1" thick same with a 2" board. The widths are a full 4", 6", 8", 10", 12". After they are cut and dried they are very rough and will give you splinters if handled carelessly. That being said the lumber is very easy to sand and makes some pretty nice boards. I took a 1 x 12 and ran it through a thickness planer and it turned out beautiful, absolutely no cupping after more than a year of just sitting on the shelf. it is a light weight wood after it's dried. I was told by an old timer that those knees will eventually push a house off of it's foundation if it's left to grow. They are a tumor that grows off of the roots of a nearby tree. They don't become another tree. I'm really surprised that you aren't walking around in 2 feet of water. Those trees are some pretty big trees I'd say well over 100 years old. Someone below asked it they smell like cedar, they don't

You had me confused there for a moment - cypress tree - in Australia we have the cypress pine which are different to the bald cypress of Indiana. We had cypress pine on our farm - Dad loved them. Beautiful tree either way and learn something every day. Keep on smiling.

I graded one load of cypress in 25 years. We traded for it and hauled back up here. I didn't really have any idea. So I just sorted what looked like hog house lumber. The idea was to sell for decking. We finally got it all sold. I bet a deck of it will last 200 years.. hehe,, I don't know what market it is for usually. Good fence posts I guess. Like locust ... I m in central Indiana. I found one stand of small cypress I think DNR planted when I was In state ground . Also found a stand of hemlock, We bought red cedar. (Jumiper) Out of Missouri. Took beech to Budwweiser. 6 Quarter ,, they grind it up and beechwood age their beer, brought back cedar. We has a market for all our persimmon logs to. Guy had old gun stock machines set up to make wood golf club drivers , it will not split. Waxy inside, Slick,, won't feed thru a planer good at all. BUT he bought all persimmon logs.

I believe here in Alabama it's illegal to cut standing Cypress. That wood makes the prettiest wooden flooring you will find..you need to make some...and the bell bottom makes great coffee tables. We use it to make board and batting..if they lose their leaves in winter they're probably bald Cypress..

When Dad retired the people worked for him gave him a clock made from a slice of cypress. I think they also gave him a bottle of 114 Old Grand Dad. Those are big enough for tabletops.
