Well worth the wait, David and Shane! Great collaboration, by the way. As with Halide, the full purchase will be made now. The perspective you provide at the end is bang on. A lifetime subscription keeps the developer motivated and fairly remunerated for their relentless efforts, skill and determination. To have this capability in our pocket is utterly remarkable. For tiny money. Those who question the fee will be frittering money away on much less crafted stuff (takeaway coffee is a good example, Shaney Boy!) And with your tuition on these apps (Halide, Moment, Even Longer, Darkroom etc), you’re turning point & shoot folk (me) into curious amateur photographers. Keep them coming David and when you’re next down south, give me a shout. I’ll put you up.

Great video. You can also do this sort of photography using the Sony Alpha series cameras with their Sony PlayMemories App. But the cost then is the camera, mine is a used Sony a7s I bought for NZ$900, and then you need a lens, and then you need to purchase the Apps individually. The Star Trails is NZ$11.95, Light Trails is NZ$5.95, and Multiple Exposure is NZ$5.95. So yes, the EvenLonger App is actually very well priced in my opinion.

Thank you David. The Leonid Meteor shower is at its peak tomorrow night, but tonight we have clear chilly skies in Seattle Washington. On the strength of your review, and in hopes of catching some good meteor trails I bought Even Longer and immediately upgraded to the continuous Pro ownership. I agree that a workman is worth his wage and this app is cheep at half its price, errr twice it’s price.

Great video. I watched Shane’s video too as a subscriber to his channel. Love the insight from both of you. 👍🏼 As for the app cost. Here in Canada it’s $6.99 to buy the app then $25.99 for the Pro subscription. It’s not even clear which features are free. I do hear what you say about professional camera gear costs but I just have a dislike of subscription model for apps. Although good for those people that use apps for their work in many cases paying an ongoing cost year after year for hobby photographers is sometimes just not worth it. Just my opinion and I know many will disagree. There are many apps (not necessarily camera related apps) that manage to progress and develop enhancements and new features without subscription model pricing.

Thanks for watching! I have no problem whatsoever with people finding a certain app too expensive or not worth it. The problem is when people complain about it in comments and leave 1 star reviews. I find apps too expensive all the time, but I quietly go, “Ah, never mind, not for me at the moment”, and move on.

A camera app is extremely hardware dependent. As a developer I have to buy every new iPhone generation and update the app constantly to only keep functioning with your next iPhone. If you don’t expect the app to work with your next iPhone, a onetime payment worth a cup of coffee or two could be ok. If you want to continue using the app with your next iPhone, think again about why subscriptions are important for developers.

Pricing shown in App Store was confusing (App Store fault not developers) There is a lifetime purchase option which appeals to me more than endless subscription. If it turns out I feel I will use it enough, the one off payment is always my preference.

Regarding the pricing model: personally I was / am reasonably comfortable with paying the lifetime one-off charge. It equates to three years of annual subscriptions, after which it is effectively free. In the context of mobile apps it might appear expensive but I’ve been around long enough to have bought programs (before they were called apps…) for desktop Windows and Mac machines where this still low level of pricing would never have been considered by the publishers. Even now, you don’t need to look very far to see examples that cost many , many times the price of this app. Phones and their technology no longer offer second or third rate performance - they offer professional standards and if you can buy an app that offers a comparable level of output, how can that be considered other than good value?

Do you know if there’s any plans for the Even Longer developers to add capability to shoot moving water? This seems the only gap in this app… but it is a big gap. Other than this, are there any apps that get good water movement results in RAW?

You can shoot moving water, especially now as there has been a boost in performance.

I usually shoot with a pro mirrorless, but an trying to hike light for some mountain hikes, so got an iPhone 13 pro and will try it out in the mountains to see if I fan leave my proper camera behind for some hikes.
