When I was a kid I went to a school which had an unusually large gymnasium for a k-9 school. On one side of the gym behind the risers was a large grate, behind it was a creepy looking padded room with all sorts of dampers and Louvers that when open in the right combination would create a vacuum effect at the grate. I still remember many paper objects finding their way through the grate while girls would fan out their long hair across it. It was a thing of wonder. The best part would be whenever the custodian would power it back on after cleaning.. the whining groan of that big old motor echoing through the gym followed the roar of air moving through the massive round ducts on the ceiling. Been into HVAC and electrical ever since!

I remember my elementary/middle school gym had huge ceiling fans- these were hooked into a system of heat exchangers for presumably heating Gym was built in 1952

My house has emerson whole house or what ever mounted above the stairs and it is a 19 something modle idk but every time my dad turned it on it would just go VROOOM BRUUUM and make a lot of noise even in low or high and I never seen how many blades it has but it blows into the attic and has a grate on it so when on the shutters will open to let airflow very cool

Similar experience here. My grade school had a Coal fired Columbus Heat Vent furnace. I would sneek away during recess & visit Carl the janitor in the furnace room. I'm sure he got tired of endless questions. That huge fire breathing machine fascinated me! I later had enjoyable career in the HVAC field. THANKS Carl!

@@grovecitysirens_GCSA louver is a type of register or grate fitted with angled slats that allow air to enter, but not rain or direct sunlight. A damper is a valve that regulates airflow in a duct using a movable plate. This plate can be adjusted to let a precise amount of air be supplied to a specific area of the building. They are either inside of the duct, where they are adjusted by a remote control, or attached to a register where they can be adjusted manually. I hope this helps.

It starts up, then (for some reason) it slows down, and then 1:58 comes around and the motor is like “GAS GAS GAS I’M GONNA STEP ON THE GAS”. That’s basically how this video goes.

You can actually see the slats (on the left) move as the fan increases/decreases in speed
@sambaker32333 жыл бұрын
This is an air Handler unit the slats are dampers that are regulated independently of the motor by the bms

Yeah air flow doesn't affect those they affect the air flow.

The air make-up section of an air handler; damper on the left is regulating fresh air intake. No clue what kind of blower wheel that is. They’ve got a VFD on the blower motor here too so a tad more efficient and noisy than the old full throttle or nothing system. The controls people who engineer the pneumatic systems which regulate the dampers, valves and motor controls in sequence are wizards in their own right. The first time I saw inside a control panel for a system like this I was blown away no pun intended!

@@ag6371 what would be the direction of air flow? Thought it was odd to see what looks like the rear disk of an impeller guessing there would be a port directly in front of it on the opposite side?

Never seen a disc fan before. I agree with the other people who have commented , that motor sounds like a train. Does that motor have a VF drive?
@michaelkryszak52623 жыл бұрын
I believe it does. In the beginning you can hear the frequency changes as it comes up to speed. Also on deceleration you can hear different drive frequencies. So it's got to be either a VFD or a soft starter.

Does this blow from outside to the supply diffusers?
@spinningfans8733 жыл бұрын
It is a return fan which pulls air from the building and blows it either outside to exhaust the building or into the air handler. The air handler has a supply fan in it which blows air into the building to supply diffusers and pulls in outside air or air from the return fan.
@ag63713 жыл бұрын
@@spinningfans873 What are those dampers on the left for?
@spinningfans8733 жыл бұрын
They are the exhaust dampers. There are also return dampers that you can't see in the video. They both modulate together to decide how much air is being exhausted from the building to control the building pressure.
