It's energy. The bees know. I work with abused dogs to rehome them for our local Humane Society. I know what they're telling me and I can "feel" what they wan't/don't want. It's hard to describe. I've only been bitten once and it was completely my fault. They wanted to make the dog unadoptable, but I convinced them that it was not the dog's fault. Four weeks later, we were able to get him into an incredible farm/home, where he had plenty of room to run. Our two week followup reported that he was amazing.

It's not uncommon for beekeepers to work without protective gear. It's not about vibes, it's about knowing what you're doing. The smoke naturally makes them stop wanting to protect the hive but if that fails, they will give warnings before they start to sting which any beekeeper knows, like having guard bees watch you in a certain formation or start to bounce off you. Then you go away for a while and give them a break, or suit up.
