It’s unbelievable what kind of damage a huge landslide did to 12 luxury houses at the rolling Hills Park Estates at the Palos Verdes Peninsula over 12 families lost their house over the weekend because a huge landslide. Some of the houses sunk 10 feet into the ground. It’s unbelievable.

Similar problem in Bluebird Canyon in Laguna Beach in 2005. The hillside just gave way, didn't matter how the house was constructed, the land it sat on went down, took the structures with it. People love to live on a hill top bluff with great views, but the locations have risk of erosion, poor drainage, and poor soils. It's been happening in various locations in California for decades. It's risky business.

Great coverage GIV. I have lived in Palos Verdes for about 40 years. I was seeing some notices on Nextdoor about cracks and water seeping up. Those posts were a day or two before the landslide. Unfortunately, it sounds unlikely there is no insurance for this disaster. They won't even to be able to rebuild on the land. One family just closed escrow and moved in 2 months ago.

Exactly, I knew this plus if you are going to build in landslide area you may as well build it on large skis. It does not help planting all the shrubs, plants , grass which require irrigation. Movement of the land destroys /breaks pipes. They should have never allowed plants etc just rocks gravel. Either way it would have collapsed .

The homeowners don't seem to realize that they are the HOA; this is a condo/townhome development. These people appear to have little understanding of the legalities of buying into such a development.
@Jeanne90275
@Jeanne90275 Жыл бұрын
@@md-wg4bzAfter reporting, you can bypass the management company and attend the homeowners'meetings. That way it gets into the record and you can supply evidence:(i.e. pics) backing up your claim These folks bought into a condo development without much knowledge and are casting about to lay blame. Water leaking for years, but they never went to a meeting, never ran for the board 😮 In my understanding, the owners of all 67 units are responsible for the damage of about $18,000,000 which is about $270,000 per unit. I, of course, could be wrong, completely and utterly.

I have read that the Palos Verdes Peninsula is the most geologically unstable area in the country. Consider over the years the sunken city of San Pedro, Portuguese Bend, the slippage along Paseo Del Mar that divided the road in two, and now this, among others. People who live there have to accept that risk.
@Strato13

I can tell you that there's a section near Portuguese Bend that constantly needs road repair, constant asphalt repair, and replacement a couple of times a year. That area is constantly shifting, moving. There's a slight downhill section where the ride feels almost like a slight drop lol..

Great reporting. I lived up Rambla Pacific in Malibu(1973-1988), on the side of hill near the top. The builder built it way over required code back in 1961-62, so much reenforced concrete, so many caissons into bedrock. I think the land would disappear leaving the house standing, however a great early 1990s fire burned whatever wasn't concrete a few years after I had sold it. Risky for sure, these homeowners deserve our thoughts and prayers, so sad!😂💝🙏💪👀

It’s unfortunate but that’s what happens when you decide to build in a subduction zone, where the tectonic plates essentially slide under the state (or that’s what i gathered from some geologists on YT, that is). The whole coast is littered with ground that is breaking apart like cottage cheese from the plate movement over time. I remember doing fire effects for a band called “Third Strike” years ago, where we did some footage off of the Malibu coast- the ground was crumbling in a really strange way which made the whole area really unstable. And of course they had to film the drum parts on a section of the coast that kind of separated like a pinnacle, which required that everyone be hooked onto climbing rope in case it collapsed or fell over. Pretty scary stuff.

It cost us over $20k or a million pesos in local currency ti get a new roof, electrical work, and some new floor tile. No matter where you live, nature can be mean.

@@frankmacleod2565 side of hill, mountain or steep drop off is never a stable platform for a structure. unfortunately it doesn't rain in SoCal often enough to remind people of that fact. besides the local ordinances probably don't allow digging in proper reinforcement... that is the pretentious part people outsourcing their research to get a yes instead of paying for proper assessment telling them to not build there. That whole area has that problem and I know the view is one of the most beautiful in SoCal.

@@doubleecpu7180 True, there aren't very many places on earth that are truly stable. I prefer to live in places that have a bit of elevation myself. There are some old village sites in Palos Verdes, the oldest continually inhabited site in the LA basin isn't far away. The entire peninsula isnt exactly falling into the ocean, despite what your youtube videos told you. It's been there a long time, sea levels have risen and fallen many times over the millennia and the peninsula is still there

@@doubleecpu7180 Surely you're familiar with Portuguese Bend. The city forbade construction there decades ago. If you're not familiar with that spot, you dont know the hill

Good video Mike! Thank you! The most likely problem was the oversaturation of the ground under the homes. Not sure if that was from the winter storms we had with so much rain coming in days upon days worth. But, that was several months ago. Could be erosion also that had been going on for quite some time, just not noticeable until now when the ground just gave way. Homes on hillsides are always a risk, no matter where it is.

Sad to see that Mike. I would not think that homeowners insurance would even cover those losses citing an, " act of nature".

Hi Mike, I just wanted to share this information. There are 4 cities to what is commonly referred to as "the Hill." There are Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills Estates, Rolling Hills, and Rancho Palos Verdes. I was born and raised in this area. This location is RHE, which is not very close to the water probably a mile and 1/2 inland. This location is directly south of Torrance, California.

Yes, when I grew up in San Pedro, we called all of those areas “The Hill”. 😂 And yes, he did mention Palos Verdes when this occurred in Rolling Hills.

INLAND FROM HAWTHORNE BLVD. I LIVED IN THE APARTMENTS ON HAWTHORNE LATE 1977 WHEN THEY WERE BEING BUILT ACROSS THE STREET. BEHIND THE APARTMENTS IS THE OCEAN. I HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS A CANYON BEHIND THAT CONSTRUCTION
