Nice recovery. This is the time when having well maintained gear and the right skills and training pays off. Absolutly agree that having an understanding of WHY a rule exists is much more valuable than just knowing the rule itself. This is showing the experience to be able to do all the load calculations in your head and constantly do risk assessments of the situation keeping your family safe. A trick I have used recently is having some winch rope wrapped around the bar ready for quick use, great idea if travelling solo.

You got out safely, no harm no foul, and lessons learned (and what a campfire story!) Been there, played that game and despite years of wheeling and recoveries of all sorts, when your deep in water, on your own, no signal - some things go out the window - rational thought seems to leave us. Can't expect to be well oiled, precise, and mistake-free when the time comes, because (thankfully) we don't rehearse these types of recoveries repeatedly to learn them. Quality equipment and good maintenance. The time invested later on reflection shows us we all still have lots to learn and apply regardless of our age or experience.

Good teamwork guys! Had this happen before! Great that you can rely on your equipment in situations like this. Imagine if that winch wasn't properly serviced or the motor packed it in or something? Sometimes they really can save your bacon. I fitted a hard wired, in cab switch for my winch to avoid this exact problem of messing around with a plug in controller in a recovery situation like this. Best winch mod ever I think. Also makes it more reliable. Stay safe guys. Jade.

While in the US army in 1989, Hohenfels Germany maneuver area. I was the track commander of a M113 armored personnel carrier (an aluminum box on treads) and my crazy platoon sergeant that had 7 tours in Nam said lets go through a puddle that looked much like this one. I was just a low life specialist E-4 but I had a bad feeling about that hole and expressed my reservations. Crazy platoon sergeant said lets go for it. I ended up just like your truck ass in buried and throwing track (meaning it was coming off). Cease and desist and had to tow it out, and get another vehicle to knock our track back on. It was messy. But it was fun. I'm thinking yall got stuck because your steering wheel is on the wrong side:)

It is almost a sure thing when things go wrong they happen so fast and you have to be ready for it, Such as getting stuck as you did snap a cv car going sideways while going up a hill and almost rolling. I dont do the stuff you do Matt but i have learnt that slow down think then act as you did then is the safe way to tackle the situation, My son almost rolled his toyota on our last camping trip . The hill was not very steep but off camber and round corner. He slipped sideways and came to a stop on the rails if not for that a rollover would have happened. i had muds on so was able to go up put a strap on him pack wheels with logs and treds and slowly pull him back. No damage and no one got hurt. I think the way to go is not go in all fired up take time think as you did then act, Great vid too Matt as usual.

It's interesting watching of-road vehicles recovery vs UTV's. The techniques are very similar. I've had all kinds of vehicles stuck in various paces. Winches are always very helpful, sometime multiple rigging points are needed as well as a "block" of some sort! I have also found a one ton rope come-a-long to be very beneficial! that and a block or two will get you back out of a lot of... muck. Been there fishing around under water for confections, then I added the winch controls in the cab. I live in Alaska so many times I have to use a multi tree anchor in the swamps. The trees are too small to use for a anchor. Tie off to the bottom of a tree, then anchor 3/4's the way up the tree to the bottom of another tree. you can repeat this up to about three times. The idea is that you create a "shear" point on the primary tree, vs a "moment" connection. I've used it many times and it works great.
@MadMatt4WD

That’s a cool idea for connecting to small trees.

Hit the water, it sunk down like entering a swimming pool and I just mashed the fuel, luckily it gripped, rolled water everywhere and jumped out the other side, it took a while to find the number plate but otherwise all was ok. Big clean up, ( I saw your follow up, mine wasn't nearly as bad) I've avoided deep mud since. Thanks for the episode I didn't realise just how lucky I was.

Afternoon Matt! When the wheels dropped in the holes at 43 secs, it was all futile (but you don't know that at the time!) for the next minute, yep, I'd have done the same, it's not really digging you in, but not getting you out. So yeah, it's winch it out. As you say, the choice and position of the tree strop can make a lot of difference in time, personally I think you picked the wrong tree, but hindsight is a wonderful thing! At 2.30-2.40 having a remote controlled winch is a lovely thing! 😛 Re the winch rope, yep, agree and in that situation would have done exactly the same. there was no real possibility of anything going seriously wrong there. All in all, a good out. 😀

I had a similar experience in my VG33E R50 Pathfinder. We encountered many bog holes full of water, some of them over the bonnet and others knee-deep, but they all had solid bottoms. We were only two bog holes away from our campsite when we got stuck in the second last one, which had a soft bottom and was over the vehicle's bonnet. I tried to get out but I couldn't, and the panic and dread I felt when my 4WD started filling up with water was terrible. This was my only vehicle and my daily driver for work, so many thoughts were going through my mind. Without thinking, I turned off the engine, thinking my 4WD was done for. My friend tried to snatch me out from behind, but we ended up snapping the snatch strap, which hit the back of my 4WD and put a dent in the hatch. We didn't have a winch, and there were no trees around us, so we had to wait for 45 minutes, which felt like hours, for someone to help winch me out from behind. The person who helped me had a heavily modified Toyota 200 series, which was around four tons, and they started to get dragged into the water with me but managed to get me out. I was so thankful, I let my car sit for about 30 minutes before starting the engine. Water shot out of the tailpipe, and by this time, there were six other 4WDs behind me, worried the same thing would happen to them. One of those 4WDs was a ranger who ended up shutting that track down after seeing what happened and how bad the second last bog hole was. The ranger then drove behind me while I limped back to the road. I ended up calling a tow truck to take my 4WD home and took it to my local mechanic two days later, thinking the worst. In the end, I had no water in my engine, but both my diffs had water in them. My gearbox and transfer case had a very small amount of water in them. I got off very lucky I walk every single bog hole now lol.

Interesting peoples different thoughts on diff locks. I’ve got them and I flick rear or rear+front before I need them. If that fails then I go for the winch. My thoughts are share the load to as many axles as possible. Looking forward (to the added security) of fitting up my new Warn 15000lb winch to the front of the Troopy. Oh, and the remote controller to stay clear of that pesky winch rope. Hope the son’s cruiser cleaned up ok

couple of things i'd suggest, use your lockers if you have them in bog holes you have more chance of driving through or reversing out if they're already in. once you're stuck most times putting the lockers in won't help you've already spun two holes and diffed out. plug the winch controller in, tuck the cord under the windscreen wiper and hand it to the driver, the spotter or passenger sets up the winch line and instructs the driver when to winch in or out to get set up. once set up the driver controls the vehicle and the winch. the spotter stands clear and gives direction.
@MadMatt4WD
@MadMatt4WD 2 жыл бұрын
The reason I don’t have the lockers in is it means you don’t drive into the problem as far and if you do stop forward movement you can put them on to drive back. Works most of the time.

@@MadMatt4WD no it doesn't, if you've got lockers and an unknown bog hole use them. you'll get further, you'll dig less holes and putting your lockers after you're bogged rarely works. we learnt this changing from detroits to selectable lockers.

Was in Honduras in the 1990's near the border with Nicaragua, got stuck in a mud hole with my HJ 61, despite having front and rear cable lockers, progress was futile. The last resort was to use the PTO winch, unfortunately due to the Sandanista rebel situation, the roads were devoid of trees for 200 meters on either side, for ambush purposes. The locals managed to find a front end loader to act as an anchor point with pulling power, it was an eventful day none the less.

Another thing I think worth mentioning is the lack of footwear. Doesn't take much to step on something like a broken stick or something else sharp under the mud or water and end up with medical situation mid-recovery. Also, the grip benefits you might get. Looking at what you were doing I did wonder if a pair of dive type boots would have been ideal, then just rinse them in clean water after the day.

I got stuck like this even though I thought I did check the bog hole thoroughly. While I spot checked the depth at multiple points along the ruts, I didn't do it thoroughly enough and didn't find the fallen tree in the bog hole. Soon as the car went up and over the tree it was done for. Thankfully I had a mate with me and we snatched out within 5 minutes but it wasn't fast enough to stop the water unfortunately. Ironically, we did discuss leaving a snatch strap tied to the recovery point before trying the bog hole but I didn't want to get the snatch strap dirty for no reason. Lessons learned...

Nice set of 37 inch treps would have done good in this situation, haven’t been through a bog hole that deep and I definitely don’t want to even on my 37" treps I flooded my driver side foot well once on my 31’s when I first got it, I saw a bog hole and tried to go through it, this bog hole however hat ruts deeper than 31’s, I ended up having to call my old man out, I ended up getting out but had to do a flush of my driver side foot well now with bigger tires I haven’t flooded anything inside the car thankfully 😂

We've all done similar stuff, I know I have. With one exception you handled it fine, and that exception is walking through a deep, muddy puddle in bare feet. I cringed when I saw that because I've seen other people do it and step on something that ripped their feet up. Funny, the winch line thing didn't bother me at all, but the bare feet made me cringe. lol

Mistakes happen & we all learn from them. Diff locks should be engaged beforehand, not after you get stuck in a bog hole, and another important one is don’t try & drive bog holes like that alone, or this will happen to you pretty early on in the piece. Cleaning the inside of that car out properly would’ve been such a p.i.t.a. Plus one for petrol Toyota 4wds - most reliable fourby’s in the country. Nice video, it was well shot & well commentated through.

The reason I don’t have the lockers in is it means you don’t drive into the problem as far and if you do stop forward movement you can put them on to drive back. Works most of the time.

I have been in this exact situation. although my car didn't survive. My name is Chris and I'm from the South Coast although this happened to myself and 3 of my friends who were in the car with me., in Menai Sydney. There are 4WD tracks off heathcote road and we use to 4WD them all the time. But I had a 100 series Landcruiser and it was petrol with no snorkel, the car was completely stock, but could do nearly anything. One day I drove nearly the whole track and smashed all puddles, until I came to this really big one and, I didnt even both to check, I think we checked with a F***** stick, clearly our intuition knew it was too deep haha. I came up a small hill and down into the puddle and accelerated into the puddle, which was my second mistake, and water came over the bow of the bonnet and all I heard is a pop and engine stalled. We all sat there in shock for around 30 seconds, and then water started creeping into the car and my mate said 'Hey Chris, water is getting into the car'. I Instantly reacted after with what he said, and ran to the back of the car from the inside to try and open the boot, but for some reason I couldn't open the door, then I remember jumping out of the window and climbing the roof to the back of the car and opened the boot and let the boys out. The car was completely flooded with mud water, and real the chocolate stuff. A Navara came and pulled us out and the car was never the same. We tried rebuilding it but it crushed me, and it sort of scarred me. But all is good, I ended up buying a Ford Maverick which was absolute complete dog shit. But it was a great car in its own right although the way it was built it was a bomb, I was like it would be very hard to buy another patrol and the reason I say that is because less than 2 weeks ago I bought a 80 series turbo diesel Landcruiser and the thing is a fucking weapon. Anyway I thought I should the story since you mentioned to share and I know exactly how it feels. Thanks for reading.

Every situation is an opportunity to learn and or teach. If we never got ourselves into bad situations, well I guess they'd build a monument to the World's Perfect Man (or woman). It happens, part of being out there vs sitting on the couch all day. You handled it just fine and if that had been your rig rather than your sons I'd wager you wouldn't have been the least bit flustered. That added pressure as a parent to "protect" our children was the unforeseen in this scenario. Overall, well played Sir.
