Nej, mine hybrid is perfect commuter that was bought used for 40 euro and I can joyfully ride with roadies or gravelies in the lead group. And costs are from 10 to 20 euro per 1000km depends on tyres I'm using. 8spd group is the best option for training and local racing. Not fast enough? Get good

Recently picked up a giant escape from market for 60. turned into 400$ of repairs to get it going and still shifts horrible. I commute sic miles from the mountains to downtown Denver. still better then worrying about having another good bike stolen.

Another reason your bike might suck is it's stock. Maybe the grips and saddle are uncomfortable. Or your bike is too heavy. Maybe your stock tires suck. Or it's slow because of its stock cassette and chainring.

I felt no. 3 if I remember correctly. Having to add and remove a lot of stuff. And I know I'm more unusual than most in this. I always have good lights for safety on the front and back day and night, summer and winter. I have various handlebars bags and a cheap double panniers I never remove and I leave my helmet and hi-vis with the bike too but I always carry an extra foldable panniers because it's an alternative to the car and I NEED to carry a lot of STUFF most of the time usually on the way back home. And better looking at it than looking for it. I bring tools, pump, spare tube, bungee cords and other things because I will have to take care of anything that goes wrong myself. I regularly end up spending an extra minute or two adding and removing these things to take with me because if I don't, eventually someone else will. I always carry a backpack on the carrier to take these accessories and necessities with me when I leave the bike. If I take the car I sit in, drive it to my destination, I lock it and walk away and forget about it. I don't mind because living part of my life by bike is just slower by nature and it's a minor inconvenience. There are so many more benefits and joys I get on the bicycle instead of using the car.
