Personally, I thought the Sanji Goodbye in the live action hit me harder than the anime. Might just be cultural differences, but I didn't feel anything for the bow. But Sanji and Zeff arguing before he leaves was so realistic and hit me really hard.

I agree, it's just cultural differences. Also, I think if he do the bow on the ship, it's gonna look clunky and hard to capture on camera. It's different medium from manga.

Yeah, you both bring up really good points! I can definitely see how the uncomfortable bickering would hit harder. Bowing isn't a thing in Latvia either, so I guess I just have a manga/anime bias there 😅 The actual filming and framing angle is probably a very large factor in them omitting it tbh.

Ditto, I think the one thing I would probably say I had more of a disappointed in it not showing up was Sanji not witnessing the duel between Zoro and Mihawk so I think that's what maybe the people who voted sidelined for his arc felt Sanji was missing in how that coincided with his own dream.

In terms of Sanji criticism, the main one I have and I was surprised to not see on the survey is, I wanted them to acknowledge that he only fights with kicks to keep his hands safe for cooking. It's a small detail that both explains why he fights with his hands in his pockets (besides looking cool) and also emphasizes how much cooking means to him.

And there's no moment like it later on where Sanji feeds someone so explicitly antagonistic to him and his goals well aside from maybe big mom but thats so damn far down the line.

I started to like Ussopp during Alabasta after the fight with the mole chick. He was scared out of his mind but this was a real cut throat situation and he came through despite his fear. The water 7and Enies Lobby arcs solidified him for me. I do wish that he got a little more shine in battles post time skip though. Needs more haki development and feats for our boy

According to a video chat of Steven Maeda (co show runner) with i think screenrant, Hachi being cut was purely a budgetary reason, and really early on as well, iirc. He presumably had a whole fight scene with Zoro planned out within Arlong Parks main building only to realise that that scene by itself would eat the whole seasons budget. that story alone, no matter the truth value, is good enough for me. and it sounded like they already had ideas of how to reestablish him later on, iirc

Now pause and consider the ramifications of that, when you realize that the things that happened in season 1 were by far the most mundane and technically unchallenging things to bring to live action. They'd better have a really, really good plan for streamlining the use of CGI, going forward. A plan so good that it lets them realize something like Hachi v. Zoro without cratering the budget as they feared. People are not going to accept "a kid with prosthetics" subbing in for Chopper, as a quick example-and that's ignoring the terrible inconvenience that a kid is going to age whether the production wants that or not.

Not because they want to, but because Oda took advantage of the season 2 announcement to show the whole world what Chopper really looks like. The production team now has to shoulder that. If they do something really dumb like use a live actor, that will literally betray what Oda took pains to show.

34:02 Luffy stated that he doesn't want to be the hero because that would involve him sharing their meat at a banquet, but he wants to eat the meat himself. It just implies that he cares more about freedom (what being a pirate means to him) and doing whatever he wants to do rather than being good or a "better" pirate. However, his actions mostly align to being "good" so I can understand why they went with something more direct rather than something with nuance. I think Luffy's definition of being hero is someone who always has to do the right thing, which is someone who is selfless

The blood bother's me because (at least in zoro's case) they keep saying "he lost too much blood"... His clothes were clean. Let's say he had to lose at least 2L of blood. Zoro in the LA loses the same as me in a small cut of my finger. Still, i understand if the age rating ended up going up because of it... But we could have trade Helmeppo's ass scene for more blood at least.

Honestly I see Luffy being as "emotional intelligent" person overall.. should put that in the survey.. A lot of new fans still see him as dummy but loves seeing him being serious about caring his crew. His character looks more human than in manga which is good.

Season 2 Side story: Ace, Thatch, Teach on WB Ship. Ep 1: They are dinking and playing cards Teachc wins with a straight all Black (laughter fun times), Thatch asks Teach "why dont you try to be a commander" Teach laughs and brushes it off saying "it was never his dream". Ace jokes and says he's too weak, they arm wrestle. However, Teach is in shock he is staring at the fruit, white noice is ringing in his ears a single second feels like hours. Thatch says "Teach? TEACH!! whats wrong why are you smiling so weirdly?" , Teach says " Zehahaha oh its nothing", Thatch goes to bite the furit, teach says "woah woah woah there its not safe to eat it on the ship, you could hurt people by mistake", Ace says " quick worrying old timer", thatch goes to bite it again Teach say" woah there, don't you want to swim in the ocean one last time, you'll regret it if you don't", thatch " ya your right, lets go for one last swim tomorrow and then ill eat the fruit" , Teach then gives Thatch a big side hug will staring directly at the fruit. I can see why a lot of people like sanji in the live action more. But i see him as way more shallow, diet version of og Sanji. Sanji is a character of contrast and strong emotions. In my opinion he is not braty(rood), and pathetic enough. His kindness is so in your face, he even gently pets gin before feeding him. He is simplier and more digestable and thats fine for the broader audience. But sanji is not a fanservice crowd pleaser, ther is Zoro for this purpose, he was usualy a fanservice one(no dis for zoro fans he is a great character with hes own depth, but he is a main fanservice of OP). Cool if you like Sanji more this way, but character isnt necessary better, he is just easier to grasp, and have close to 0 negative sides to him. This is just Sanji for the normies(not in a negative ways, but not everybody can understand or feel everything). Sorry if my English was bad, not my first language.

I see where you're coming from, and I definitely agree, everything in the anime/manga are better, it's more fleshed out and the characters are better characterized. I think people say that Sanji is better in the live action, it's only for 1 reason, and that is he is more flirtatious than perverted. Granted, he wasn't really perverted in the beginning in the anime/manga either.

I reckon anyone who voices a preference for that version had best remember that they will always have the anime, rather than implicitly suggesting that the changes necessitated for live action are inherently a downgrade or failure.

if i had any criticism for the live action its was the change of Coco village not knowing Nami's plan. its just hard to believe she hidden 100 million berry without Nojiko ever finding out and her realizing the villagers knew and them willing to die fighting knowing Arlong betrayed Nami and she breaks down after trying so hard keeping them safe. it just hits harder if everyone knew

for sanji bowing is an asian cultural thing and wouldn't make sense between zeff and sanji who are european. as for zoro not calling luffy king of the pirates because its more condense and we havent seen them all bond enough it wouldnt make sense in the live action one for zoro to be all in

personally, i'm ok with keeping the Cobymeppo/Garp B plot, but wished they'd held on before having Coby and Luffy meet again, just like in the manga. that way, Coby would've had more development and the anticipation of then meeting again would've been elevated for the fans.

@28:00 ish, I agree with this, that the luffy flashback lacked the adequate amount of emotion. Honestly, I feel that way about all of the flashbacks. Like, zoro should have been ugly crying when he asks for kuina's sword. Same with luffy when he sees shanks arm. A lot of straight face, single tears rolling down the cheek going on in a bad way. That being said, solid 9/10 for me through the whole first season. Also, don't sleep on luffy for "improved over the source material" imo. Through experience and hindsight I think most people understand luffy's emotional intelligence and ability to read people, but as someone who's rewatching one piece via dragging a roommate kicking and screaming into the world, early luffy is really simple as a character. He blankly stares at someone and then goes "yeah. yeah. yeah. ok time to dismantle the local government to bring a smile to a dog's face." Live action luffy is much more vocally nuanced, and has surprisingly mature takes and responses. Edit: I see a later poll question kinda indirectly hits on this, though lmfao at any of that being a criticism rather than a positive.

Wenn I first saw the Baratier in the series, I was like " Man, that looks nice. " ^^ I wonder what other sets they can build for future seasons... But yeah Shell's Town and Buggy's Tent were also cool. I love live action Sanji for sure. But that's also due to cultural difference. manga Sanji is very funny in/for Japan - while many in the west find his "perving" annoying. I find both are good Sanjis. I like both versions.

This complaint is less obvious, but at the core, the exact same complaint as saying watching a live action of a comedy anime and complaining that there are no exclamation points over their heads when they get mad. Or that a character face doesnt split in two and they swallow an entire turkey whole when they eat. An anime character *_can_* be that stupid. A live action character *_cant._* It would break the suspension of disbelief. So they modified it to make it fit. It is indeed a *_feature, not a bug_*

As someone who did not watch the show and watched LA first, you don't need to be so suspicious about new audience results. What happens after you get sucked into a cool world and lore that happens to have tons of various media available for further exploration is that you do that just that - explore. Many people likely did not take this quiz immediately after finishing the show. They had to have been invested enough to even find the quiz. I personally watched a lot of reaction videos of other people, new and existing fans. That's where I learned where the show differed and names like Chopper and Robin. Their excitement made me excited. I agree that some people liked goofed but the show is good so it must have replicated the same beats and impacts.

My visualisation of the first episode of season 2 is vastly different. Assuming their budget gets vastly bigger thanks to the show's popularity, they should go all out with Hatchan. Not only is it a big thank you for fans of the series who really wanted to see him appear, it would also present a good display of the crew's current power level and abilities without taking too much time. Imagine the show starts with the Going Merry in the middle of a heavy storm, and the crew is under attack by remnants of the Arlong pirates, led by Hatchan, as an act of revenge. We see the four crewmembers, Zoro, Sanji, Ussop and Nami, fighting the fishmen left and right, in a sequence that is very similar to the anime opening that focuses on their fighting styles. Then when Hatchan takes them on with his 6 swords, we finally see Luffy, and the 4th wall bounty poster appears to introduce him, which he acknowledges proudly. They defeat Hatchan together through coordination and teamwork, before tossing him overboard, where he retreats into the depths. The everyday life scene that Koroto wants would comes in right afterwards, showing a contrast between the fights and the downtime. Simple things like Nami eating tangerine tarts, or Zoro and Sanji washing dishes. Whilst the crew are mucking around, one of them (probably Ussop) notices that the Going Merry has taken considerable damage in the previous fights, and so they agree to port in Loguetown so they can get supplies before heading to Reverse Mountain..

Tuning down Sanji attitude towards women and Luffy being comically dumb was a good decision. It would feel weird in LA. About Usopp. I think writers dropped the ball. He's shining moment should be confronting Kuro to give Kaya an opportunity to escape. Not the one useless shot after shoehorn "girl power" moment. Luffy initially looked for Usopp because of his dad, but he and Zoro welcomed him as nakama because his bravery in a pinch. In LA there's nothing to justify Usopp joining the crew.

5:36 that’s the problem here the damage in one piece verse wouldn’t translate immagine how many weeks how many time skips we would have if they showed all the damage, It’s just too expensive although I highly crave it, Imagine arlong biting into luffy and luffy breaking his nose imagine the part where arlong stabs zoro with his nose and proceeds to rip the bandages just too see a barely attached torso of zoro 😂 Like they couldn’t go to the next arc we would need to see the medical treatment, and scars too we need to see that, makes me wonder oda does not explain shit, Like he needs to explain that peak humans in one piece can store HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CALORIES through 6 powers life restore is one of kamadoris moves which u can save energy for later or use it to heal now. We’ve seen that a glass of milk can replace the loss teeth or fix broken bones. Like this would make the injury/healing aspect make sense but would cost a ton. I’m hoping they add some more injury also strength too. They need to know the crew sanji zoro are strong not just luffy sanji can kick a multi ton sea beast zoro can lift ships and tank a ship that ran him over the Forrest 😂 But thinking more about it I can see how it becomes less serious they want this to be on edge and showing zoro and sanji doing that would give the viewer less worry about the strawhats meaning less tension

I agree on Gin being basically forgotten and the survey being really sus, as someone who got into the anime recently after watching the live action show (no spoilers please, barely 90 ish episodes in) I didn't notice characters like Patty or Gin on first viewing.

Faithfull to the source doesnt mean "how close was it to a frame for fram clone". Faithfull means how well did it honor the spirit of the original. We all *_KNOW_* it wont be a 1 for 1 copy. Its literally impossible cuz its a different format. So the question is, how well does it represent what One Piece is about. And I think its god damn near a 10. I dont give 10s cuz its an impossible value, that means nothing could possibly be better and nothing else will ever beat it which is, first of all, subjective and second of all completely impossible to know. But I think this is as close as you could ever expect an adaptation to be, that means its as faithful as if could ever be expected to be. Meaning a 9.9 rating in faithfulness is *_not_* actually an exaggerated rating. Do I rate the show 9.9? no. There are stories out there I think are better, Id give One Piece about 8 or 8.5 But the rating for how well theyve translated the spirit of One Piece into live action? Yea, thats a 9.9. The experience was pretty much identical, I often completely forgot it was live action, it was just One Piece.

I think REALISTICALLY it would work exactly as sea-based travel is supposed to 😅 All of pre-timeskip is like 3 months (One Piece is a water world, but those travel times are still soooo fast it's insane), they can easily stretch that by just saying travelling between Arlong Park and Loguetown took 3 weeks, Loguetown to Reverse Mountain took another week etc. Basically just add extra travel time that eventually adds up to make the passage of time irl feel more natural. Since they brought up Harry Potter as an example - the movies also constantly have time jumps to get through the school-years and it felt natural. Think they can do the same with travel.

How about an opening like this, Showing the Going Merry sailing in the middle of the ocean.. Then before showing any ot the crew.. Another new scenes of their childhood then transition to whatever they're doing on the ship.. How about that? Kind of reintroducing the crew to us would be a nice touch.

The music was a mixed bag. On the one hand, it's a little bit superior to Hollywood's current compositional output. On the other hand, that's an extremely mediocre bar. Things like Mihawk, or the leitmotifs for Going Merry, Nami etc. worked, and heck, I was happy the composers understood themes because in today's Hollywood music landscape it's a forgotten art. But do this: Go back to Sanji/Zoro's fight with the fishmen. Listen to that music. _Try_ to tell me it isn't the most generic drivel ever. How would you play that on a piano? You wouldn't. There's nothing there. It's exactly like the vast majority of rent-a-composer work for streamed TV. Also, using music (bland music at that) during the "Help me" scene brought that moment down several pegs.

as a fangirl myself, i dont think shipping is weird at ALL. some characters or people just have good chemistry, or maybe have a certain dynamic that one enjoys (for me thats zoro and sanji as the two people who bicker constantly but would actually die for each other, or luffy and zoro as queerplatonic soulmates (luffy is aroace and zoro is gay imo)). however what IS weird and makes people uncomfortable, is when people somehow think that them shipping characters means, that these characters should actually get together in the canon. especially in one piece. im GLAD oda definitively said that theres never gonna be any romance between any of the strawhats, or with anyone really. its such a purehearted adventure story, anyone actually developing any kind of romantic feelings for anyone else in the main cast just kind of feels out of place. even for sanji!!! or maybe especially for sanji, he's too hopeless and cringe to actually ever get a lady i think (not like he was ever really IN LOVE with pudding either). but in our heads, or designated fan spaces like in fanfics and stuff, i think we should be able to ship whatever, cause it doesnt affect anything anyway!! if *I* want to smoosh together sanji and zoro like two ken dolls and think of fun scenarios in my head, i think i should be able to do that :D

Listening to your discussion of which characters are better in the live-action than in the 'source material', I feel like you let the anime severely color your interpretation of the manga characters. Many gags are less obnoxious in manga form simply because they happen in the background as a way to fill out the scene and don't necessarily end up being jammed into the foreground in the way the anime tends to do in the process of converting a single panel into a smoothly flowing interaction. Things like Usopp cowering or Sanji simping can be far more nuanced in the manga because, like any gag, it is the delivery that makes the joke successful, and for a running gag the skill it takes to keep it entertaining is so much more demanding.. and Oda has that skill. Meanwhile, the anime pretty much adopts on a 1:1 basis even when it isn't going to work as well in an animated format, whereas the live action is very loosely rewriting all sorts of things to flow better. There is absolutely no surprise for me that people ended up being less annoyed by live-action characters given how well they executed the casting and general tone of the series in the writing. Edit: I feel like I may have been the one writing the custom 'more strawhats, more interactions' comment. I remember spending quite a bit of time on that survey in the week after binging the crap out of the show and needing some way to vent all the things my brain was overloaded with. It definitely sounds to me like something I may have written!

Ohh yeah, absolutely the anime colors my perception - that's the first one I experienced after all, don't think I can ever really change those first impressions. Though, just for the sake of argument, I think the inverse is also true, books/comics/manga etc. leaves far more room for interpretation - you as the reader decide how the character sounds like, how long the actual scenes last etc. and I also think suspension of disbelief is far far stronger for any sort of shenanigans the characters might pull, so you might end up "forgiving" something you wouldn't in live action, for example. That said, you definitely raise a good point (especially with One Piece where the anime pacing is...... pacing 💀), so I could probably talk about this alone for hours 😂

​@@KorotoTV Yeah, you are completely right regarding the room left for interpretation where the manga is concerned. But that's as much that medium's strength as it is the anime's to have great voice actors, soundtrack and animation to really make the feels hit a thousand times harder. (Merry..! 😭) For all the strengths the anime has, it is limited by its creators desire to be quite faithful to the original while the quality really varies, which is probably made worse with post-EL pacing and the refusal to go seasonal while also refusing to put in filler arcs. Please give me simple little episodes like episode 384 where the crew just banter and have fun. Show me a starving Luffy roping in Chopper for a nightly fridge raid by the power of his stomach. Show me Zoro's struggles with a broken or lost barbell, and how he tries to get Franky and Usopp to create him something new. Show me Nami realizing some things based on the maps she's recently drawn managing to explain away why some islands weather phenomena are related due to the currents of the ocean and causing a fun adventure because of it. Give me a semi-serious episode where Luffy & co visit Ace's grave (assuming Oda isn't saving that for the future). The possibilities are endless and Toei just does not use them.
