Apparently some of the cast of Shadowhunters are going to be attending the London ComicCon. Half of me wants to go up to them and ask "Why become involved with such a bad series that is literally a Harry Potter rip off?" but I'll probably get a response like "It's just a job that pays" which is fair but still. I don't care if they offered to buy me the world, I'd never get involved with the series even if it was the only thing left in the world to make money from.

I really liked your views on Gollum and your favorite romance novels. They were nice positive videos. I hope you can find a camera soon to record more videos like that. Some suggestions for short videos until then: * Read some short poetry/stories and give your views on them * Grammar lessons * Short essays on topics you like (You could just record audio and put some still images in to make a video, might solve your problem of not having a camera) * Read your favorite part(s) of a book and talk about it. Along the same lines, quotes from books you love could make a great video. Just audio would also be great, maybe you could record it in your phone.

Your video on masculine and feminine was what drew me to you originally. I have watched it multiple times. I'm a feminine woman, and I have often thought about women in the books I grew up with, and how they were so much more masculine than I was. It always felt like if I wanted to be strong, literature thought that I had to be masculine. Hermione was one of my favorite book characters, but the movies ruined her by making her a Mary Sue with all the answers, instead of a brilliant young woman struggling with self esteem issues who loves books, always has the answers, but anxiety sometimes prevents her from remembering them in high stakes situations. I identified with her, because her flaws and her femininity made her relatable to me, then the movies decided that she had to be traditionally gorgeous, confident, brilliant and flawless. (not that Emma Watson can help but be gorgeous, but her hair lost it's messiness as she aged, which is not something that happened in the books)

Emma lost her Acting skills by HP4.... She couldn't even laugh properly. Remember the laugh when they sit around the fire( daily prophet). And remember her expressions in Avada Kedavara classes. It was not expression of horror of seeing Avada Kedavara. It looked like 'Mad eye is about to Rape me, help'. Thats when i dissmissed her as an actor

I know this comment is very late, but I just discovered your channel yesterday. I'm 18 and I find your channel so refreshing and intriguing. I began reading the Cassandra Clare's books when I was 13 and still do enjoy them to some extent. They are quite entertaining to read. However, I binged watched all of your shadowhunters videos and you elegantly explained many of the issues I have had with her books. It is nice to see another young woman who shares my veiws on feminism. The way you described your relationship with reading as a child is very similar to my own experience with reading as a kid. I'm a Catholic, born and raised, but I do agree there are issues with the institution of the Catholic Church. Overall, we seem to share similar veiws and interest. I find you very relatable and look forward to more content from you!

Yeeeees! A Hobbit fan! That book made my childhood and inspired me to write from the age of 10! As for the whole "Catholic Church is corrupt", it is. Unfortunately they aren't really Catholic as they don't preach what is the true faith and are horrific people to boot. Unfortunately all other Catholics trying to live the faith as they are supposed to get a bad rep from these "figure heads" who are the focus group. The church actually has a better history than is generally believed. Only every bad event of the past is talked about and vilified and the great amount of good is swept under the rug. Haha! This is the topic I could ramble about all day! Great video and congrats on your one year KZbin Anniversary!

I'm not Catholic but studied theology in university, and always feel disappointed when people say, "The Catholic Church is corrupt." The Church is the believers, living and dead, in union with Christ at the head. It's not the clergy and their bureaucracy. And of course it's corrupt. That's the point. The believers are corrupt individuals united with the incorruptible head in hope of being uncorrupted.

If you ask me the last airbender was a bloody masterpiece. Every character had an impact on the viewer, I mean the way they addressed each character's development was so riveting, even social interactions with each other taught a thing or two to the viewer. I remember sneaking into the living room to watch the late night episodes on the tv cos I didnt want to miss em, after watching the finale which rather fittingly ended as the summer started, I literally didn't know what to do. I remember being monumentally disappointed with korra though, I felt as though they were trying WAY too hard with korra and making her really strong and aggressive and blah blah. Then lazily trying to making her a lesbian in the end like urgh... hooray you scored some social justice points, hold th rainbow flag

It’s great to see someone else who loves Enid Blyton! If you haven’t already chosen your books for the positive reviews, any or all of Enid Blyton’s series would be awesome, even though they’re quite old. I think the reason why SJM is so popular despite lacking the edge of Cassandra Clare’s stuff is that she’s great at coming up with premises that should be really interesting, a badass assassin who’s also feminine and cares about the people, a political fantasy based on Celtic and Medieval English folklore, etc. She just doesn’t have the skill to actually execute those ideas well, and because she’s gotten away with it so far she probably never will. Thanks for the video and Happy KZbin Birthday!
@alexandra16955 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with the SJM stuff. Her premeses are really interesting and cool but she just fails in the execution. I think that's why people who loved the first few Throne of glass hate the later ones with burning rage. They started as a cool badass female assassin and they ended up being about mates and sex and all that shit. Her books are advertised as high fantasy badass feminist novels but they just end up being just about mates and toxic relationships and sex and I think that is why they are so hated. I think is they were advertised just as fluffy smutty Na/Adult book that happen to be fantasy people wouldn't hate them so much. And the fact that ACOTAR is a beauty and the beast retelling instead of Tamlin. She just copied the name and wrote a beauty and the beast retelling because it will sell more.

Yea, about the same here. I was also a feminist until I realize just how crazy the movement has become, and, that it never really was an attempt for equality in the first place. They wanted to improve the lives of woman, not males; equality was, from the start, just a cover, and when that showed its face to me it was just impossible to associate me with that movement any more. The legal system in the country where I live does not make it better either; Incredible biased and ridiculously unfair. Fortunately the movement is managing to get so out of touch with reality that even females start to notice that it is bad (for them), and that has, hopefully, a potential to shut the movement down. Maybe the legal system will be able to repair itself again. Probably not, but, we will see.

just wanted to say, you are ao eloquent and well spoken and you get your points across so well it makes it a joy to listen to you. I have been marathoning your videos and found myself agreening with basically everything you said, (my only point of contention was the point you made on villans that they need to be understood and rounded chaachters, I like it when they are but I don't find it a neccessity. the villan is there mainly to challenge the characters ideals and goals and as long as he isn't written to cheesy and streotiypical he can be a bland character a good example of that is fire lord ozai in the avatar series he is pretty bland but exactly what the protaganist needs as a challenge.) and learning about litterature way more then what I had in high-school. and if all of it wasn't enough you very easy on the eyes so it makes your videos even more of a pleasure to watch. by the way wanted to ask you are you majoring in litterature or planning to write a book since I would definitely want to try it out. good luck on your endevors and your channel thankes for a year of wonderfull content and hope for many more years to come.

I think its quite dangerous to compare civil rights and liberties between the western world and the rest of the world. It's an unfair comparison. And just because one might be more graphic or covert doesn't take away from the other. Its actually a fairly used political tactic throughout history to help keep social order. And when I actually think about it, I see the same issues in both parts of the world. Women being killed by their partners, women/girls being forced into marriages, sexual assault, inequalities in the work place, reproductive rights, etc. And while I do agree that we (being the western world) have really progressed in certain issues, I think its important to keep in mind that some of these rights and liberties we have fought for can be taken away. I live in the US and under the current administration it does not seem like women are not seen as equal in the sense of reproductive rights, sexual assault, etc. These liberties are constantly being threatened or not taken seriously. I personally just don't like when the comparison of "well this person or this group of people have it way worse therefore I must not have it so bad" is made. For example, say I struggle with depression as does my friend. My friend attempts to kill herself and thus is forced into treatment. Me saying well I only have suicide ideation and haven't tried to kill myself so therefore I must not have it so bad, is just not true. I am still just as depressed as she was, I just haven't had that particular manifestation of the illness. Just because the symptoms may be different doesn't mean the underlying problem is gone or is less than. I do agree with you regarding the extreme feminism that seems to have taken over. It honestly makes me sick. This is not my feminism nor do I believe its most peoples. Just the same for republicans in America. I do not believe that they are all racist and homophobic and xenophobic just because our President is. It seems that those with the loudest and most outlandish statements get the news coverage or goes viral...which is unfortunate. The way I see it, everyone thinks they have the answer and no one is willing to have an actual discussion. Add in fake news...and matters only worsen. People hear and see what they want and thats fine but I think if we all took a moment to actually talk to one another, we could find some common ground. My feminism includes men. I think gender stereotypes are just as harmful to men as they are to women. Suicide rates in men, men being sexual assaulted and molested, family court issues, etc are all very real problems that need to be addressed. It seems that everyone is very defensive. When certain feminists speak, I think certain men get defensive and think we do not care about their issues and problems and vice versa. And so they raise their voices and become defensive to try and show their point of view. But in the process, they are putting the other group down and trying to silence them which only makes matters worse. I think it would help if men who are victims of sexual abuse or family court injustices or whatever the case may be got together and really pushed for their issues to be seen, it would help. I think its really unfair that men expect women to vocalize and fight for their rights when the same has (for the most part) never been reciprocated. This just furthers my point of working together. Seeing the common ground but also acknowledging that women have been historically and systematically oppressed and just because we can vote and get a job does not mean that magically goes away. Just because black people can vote and go to the same schools as white children does not mean they are treated fairly or justly in America. Racism is still rampant and so is sexism.

This was an interesting QandA thanks for doing it. As others have mentioned, catholic history isn't quite as bad as most people tend to think and people don't realize just how much of western society owes itself to Catholicism. If you're interested in it, I would refer you to the book Bearing False Witness by Rodney Stark, and How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization by Thomas Woods. Also child abuse isn't something unique to the Catholic church. It's been shown that child abuse in the public school system is many times greater. I enjoy a lot of your videos (my favorite one was the one about femininity), so congrats on one year of KZbin and look forward to watching more of your videos.

When it comes to feminism I agree with you on a lot of points. I live in Scandinavia and legally we females have the same rights as men. However sexual harassment in the workplace is something that has happened to me and almost all of my female friends (that I have talked about this issue with). And, at least for me (and some friends), the sexual harassment had no consequences at all. The people in question were told not to do it again and when they did, they were simply told not to do it again (again!). I'm wary of calling myself a feminist, as I am all for equal rights. I am aware that a lot of the problems faced by women are problems men face as well. I would never ignore that, and I think that's definitely something that has to be worked at! I'm just tired of having my male colleagues comment and grab at my boobs in every single job I've ever had.

Because I wanted to get it right, I read several novels with heroines written by women, including the first couple Throne of Glass books. It was about when I couldn't stand one more word from Ms Maas' pen that I stumbled upon Authentic Observer's expertly crafted and genuinely insightful opinion on masculinized (masCulinzed ? mascUlinzed ? mascuLInized ? yes, it's a word!) females in fiction. Lol see, I read ACOTAR first and loved it, and loved the second one, the third was okay, and then 3.5 wasn't the best, but I get it. Call it my guilty pleasure, I guess. Then I tried reading Throne of Glass and I could barely get through the first chapter because I couldn't stop my eyes from rolling to the back of my head every second. But I understand why a lot of people don't like them. Personally, I don't think ACOTAR is boring, the story and the writing style really rang with me. But Throne of Glass is just plain terrible. I would love to see a series on Throne of Glass, but more than anything I would love to see one on Zenith. I have to agree with you that BookTube is lacking depth. I stopped watching so many BookTubers because I noticed they weren't posting anything negative either because they don't want to upset people or they 'want to be part of the author community'. I trust negative reviews more than I trust positive reviews. On Goodreads, I scroll right past the positive and go straight to the negative reviews to see what people didn't like about the book, because I can trust that they're somewhat analytical thinkers who care about what they read, and don't care what others think. Thanks for sharing! Your name is super gorgeous btw!

If anyone, male or female is easily beating people up there should be a proper backstory as to why. For the most part comic books are great at developing characters with fighting styles that make sense. I’d love to hear more on the subject.

Yay, we're the same age! I don't like the Catholic church either and I'm a Christian, I'm disgusted with what some have done to children and I agree with you, it is corrupt. Also, I'm planning to read and review Throne of Glass and ACOTAR. Because it sounds interesting and it's a divisive series, that I have to decide for myself, if I like or not. Plus, there are worse writers than Sarah J Maas. E.L James is worse than her, because everything in her bools are wrong. I'm actually planning to do a video series, kinda like what you did. On the fifty shades of grey books.

I agree with you and I'm catholic. But I am not blind of the corruption in the catholic church. In fact I had witnessed it first hand and was almost a victim of it back when I was a child (But my father noticed that the priest was inviting me too much to go to his room for candies, although he didn't do anything during that time, and my father reported it to the bishop and the priest was relocated.). But the priest who came after said that the person preaching in the church is still a human (a stranger he said) and thus should not be trusted with their children nor is the priest be equated to God. Although I don't go to the catholic church that often anymore, I am still a firm theist and believer. But I know that priests are not morally superior than others. Its sad really how the first church of Jesus had degraded into some kind of corporation filled with corrupt business men in the guys of clergymen, greedy for power and etc. I always remember that scene of Jesus kicking the stalls of those people who turned God's temple into a market. What would Jesus think of his followers now...

I love your channel, I really loved the incredibly in-depth and truthful analysis of Claire's books and really helped me a lot as a reader as well. So, as someone who adores Sarah J Maas' Throne of Glass series (not as big of a fan of her other series) and who read the comments and saw that you hinted that there are problems in ToG, I was... dismayed. Now, if I were only a reader, I would think, 'hey everyone has their own opinions', and then just not watch those possible negative reviews of Tog books, but as I love the other videos I've seen, still watch your other videos. But I am also trying to become a better writer, and your CC videos really helped me, and I think that as a writer, I shouldn't turn a blind eye to the negative parts of SJM and her books, especially if, in your opinion, they are even worse than TMI. I will not look forward to it, I will hate every bit of it, but I know that I will also have my eyes opened and I will learn - that is, even if you do decide to do a negative review series thingy again.

I adore your videos! If you want another fantasy series that you probably haven’t read, I’d consider picking up the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It’s a mixture of Westerns, sci-fi and fantasy, and after reading both the Shadowhunter series and the Dark Tower series, I can say that they are almost exact opposites, and the series is known for being more genuine and visceral than most fantasy series in that regard. The first book is certainly strange, but it leaves you hungry for more without the use of any cheap gimmicks or love triangles.

I completely agree with you on a lot of the things you said, especially about feminism and religion. I was raised in a very religious household, but over the years I've developed views very much like yours. And speaking of religion, you've mentioned Philip Pullman and His Dark Materials before, and I thought it was so interesting how you've agreed to disagree with Pullman, something a lot of people aren't willing to do. I remember people in my country boycotting the movie when it came out. Especially considering your views on religion and that you said you'd like to do more positive videos, I would love to see an analysis video on them, maybe about the characters or dæmons or Dust or the Magisterium, if you're ever willing to make one! I think I remember you talking about Lyra before, and it seemed like you really loved her.

I still support equality for everyone of course, but I just really don't wanna be associated with toxic radical feminists. labels really shouldn't matter this much anyway, actions are the most important in a person. you can believe in equality and fight against discrimination and injustice without calling yourself a feminist.

It's as if every word you say I agree with XD. Seriously, though, I know I'm late, but I enjoy your videos so much, and I respect and admire you a lot for really saying what you believe and saying, quite frankly, what is the truth. I think in this day and age, so many people can be afraid to speak up for anything that they believe in that can happen to be controversial, or not common among people, because they're just torn down to shreds, but I really appreciate everything you say regarding feminism, because I agree whole-heartedly. I once considered myself a feminist, until I started seeing what a lot of feminists were like today. I don't think there are even that many issues about it -I mean, people get so angry about the gender-wage gap, but it's honestly not what they think it is, because its not like companies intentionally paying women less, it's just the choices women tend to make. And they tend to take lesser paying jobs, and there's nothing wrong with that. So here we have this huge demographic of all the working men and women, and like the difference was what? A couple cents? And that's only because of different choices between men and women -it's just truly ridiculous. And the feminists who are like that are just such insults to what feminism used to be, and what the suffragettes once fought for, and just bringing down men and shaming them for being, well, men is just awful, and that needs to change. It's so awful that women here in a free society where they have all their rights are playing the victim, while there are women out there who are truly suffering and do not have our freedom or our rights. So. Yeah. Sorry, that turned into a rant, but just wanted to say, I love your videos. Your the only KZbinr I'd watch for 50 minutes straight, I completely admire and respect you and I look so forward to seeing more content! :)

Hey Galatea, I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your channel and congratulations on your first KZbin birthday!! If you're looking for a fantasy series to do an in-depth analysis of, I highly recommend you try looking into Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy (or series depending on how far you want to go with it) It has incredible writing with very solid characterisation and world-building. Obviously, I am a great fan of Robin Hobb, but I know her writing doesn't work for some people due to the pacing. I'd cosider you a feminist in the old fashioned way. You're not a feminazi. Heck, I consider myself a feminist and I'm a dude. But it's just the basic idea of it. I'm not for that other crap that obviously favors women over men and is considered "equality." I personally think women and men would benefit more from working together instead of against in the western world. Set an example for nations and countries not as developed as us. But instead I am shamed for having balls that need space when I sit. And the guys that go out of their way to basically be the male version of a feminazi or also way wrong too. We just need to stop being so extream and work together. Hopefully there are more people like you and me that are young and think all this extream crap is just stupid. Something I've noticed about christianity (I can't speak for catholics because I'm not one. I'm baptist) is that the religion promotes the individual. And Im not a crazy fanatical about it. I'm pretty relaxed with my faith for a baptist. Just an observation I've had. (Oh and the catholic church at the very top to the pope has always rubbed me the wrong way. Love the people. The people leading them? Ehhhhh....) I could go on all day as to why they abuse children. It's actually a pretty interesting topic. Galatea was, in greek mythology, a very beautiful statue of a woman created by pygmalion and fell in love with it. Aphrodite recognized his love and longing and made the statue come to life. (I'm a huge nerd for Greek Mythology) If you like poltical stuff and some philosophy I really recommend "The Quest for Cosmic Justice." - by Thomas Sowell. It's more sociology-ish but I really do recommend it. Not just to you Galatea but to anybody wanting to know about social justice and the like.

I think what you maybe tried to say with your explanation about Feminism is that while you yourself did not change, and maybe the dictionary definition of feminism didn't change, but over time the way our culture and society and feminism itself defines feminism changed. I think that change is best described where the 1 issue was split into 10 , then into 100 , into 1000, into 10000.

As a person who loves Sarah J Maas's books, I would just like to know in as few offensive words as possible why people hate it. I have been surrounded by a lot of readers and all of them told me that TOG and ACOTAR are some of the best series out there. The only person who bothered to contradict me was my mom, who only really discouraged it because the main character is an assassin, and she doesn't want me to think killing people was okay (she didn't even read the books tho) Additional question: If Sarah J Maas's books were the first Y/A book you have ever read, would you even maybe like it? Additional additional question: Would you consider reading School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani? It's my favorite book series EVER and even though I might be hurt if you criticize it, I just feel it would be really interesting to see your point of view.

Abt the feminism thing: it's sexual harassment, abuse, and assault, rape, and social issues involving the treatment and perception of women that I tend to focus in regards to the western world, the U.S. in particular

Christina G I think woman in the Middle East and Africa are suffering A LOT more than woman in the western world. They are being sold as wives at the age of 12 and not given any rights to an education or over their own body. If they are in an abusive marriage they can’t leave it because the man in the marriage is the only one who can divorce a woman. They are stripped of their rights, I think you should focus more of you’re feminist efforts on those areas of the world compared to the western world. This wasn’t meant as an attack at all, it’s just my opinion.

*Yawns as I see another idiot.* Evolution of language. That's what it used to be. Now, it's a petty cult of bitches complaining about things that men do. Man spreading? Seriously? That's harmful, lawful, economic or in any way reasonable? Mansplaining? Literally the equivalent of "shut up women go make me a sandwich". Seriously? This shit is important? Now, curcumsision being legal, men not having the right to body integrity, disproportionate amount of men loosing custody in situations when they should be winning the law court, disproportionate amount of men commiting suicide, disproportionate amount of men dying in wars, at sea, in oil rigs, mines. Etc. Et fucking cetera. Jeez, feminism needs to grow up.

Love this video! Two things I'd like to say: First, with regards to feminism: yes, women in the West have the same rights that men do; the problem is that there's quite a lot of men who don't seem to know this, and moreover don't know how to treat women. If you want to know what I mean, just look at the recent responses to women being asked what if men had a 9 PM curfew- I was honestly quite shocked by it. Yes, complaining about men sitting in a certain way is a bit mad, but I don't think that negates the bigger issue in the West. As for comic books (I insist on calling them that, never graphic novels- fear of the name only increases fear of the thing itself), I'd love it if you spoke more about ones you like. If you haven't already read it, I'd recommend Alan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing- trust me, it's great!

I would LOVE to watch a series on Throne of Glass. Everyone keeps raving about it but I just couldn't finish it. I haven't started her second series but I've heard a ton about the parts including sexual assault. It's just not a great series and I don't understand the hype, but I don't feel like I know enough about it (from having stopped reading them) to properly defend my opinion. As for your take on feminism, I agree labels are stupid. I do consider myself a feminist, and by that I mean I'm in favor of equal rights for everyone, as in men and women and gender nonconforming people all deserve equal rights--in a negative sense as well as a positive (ex: being convicted of abusing other people, closing the wage gap, paying for first dates, etc.). The issues I mainly concern myself with on this front are in preventing rape and sexual assault, since that happens much more often to women and girls than men and boys. From living on a college campus, about half or a little less than half of my friends have experienced something of this nature (and none of them have reported it since they know nothing would happen to apprehend their rapist) and I've seen firsthand how it can destroy a person's life and affect those around them. In legal matters in the Western world, yes, women are technically equal to men. Socially, however, there's still the danger of men deciding that a woman can't speak for herself, doesn't mean what she says, or doesn't know what she wants, or even that men simply don't care. Sometimes people just don't understand what consent is. It's a big topic and a heavy one at that, but large enough that I still think of myself as fitting under that umbrella. I'm not sure if this is different from your experience, but most of the feminists I've encountered don't believe in female superiority or hate men or focus solely on small issues like manspreading; it's mostly about changing society to ensure toxic masculinity is viewed as truly toxic by not just women and those who identify as another gender, but men as well.
