The Pyxis wasn't made for entry level run-n-gun users. The Pyxis is designed for sticks and shoulder work like a RED or an ARRI. If people want a flip-out screen and HDMI, they should buy a handycam. Even if the 4" screen flipped-out, I wouldn't use it. I'll be using the EVF and the 7" external. There's no need for built-in NDs, as most cinematographers already have screw-on NDs or a Matte Box with NDs. NiSi ATHENA PRIMEs even have a drop-in ND blade option. Built-in NDs would be too limiting or not used. The people complaining about the side screen and no built-in NDs are just painting themselves as handycam hobbyists not cinematographers making films.
@dimediaatl5 ай бұрын
The purpose of any design is ease of use and clarity. With that in mind. If its designed for shoulder work than the display should be on the 1st AC side not on the operator side LIKE IT IS ON THE ARRI FYI. Considering that its a touch display it would be super easy to bump it with your ear or side of the face when shoulder mounted and change settings (which as I said is not ideal). For sticks it would still make sense to have a flip out or top display for easier control (not factoring in picture preview). Try leveling a camera on a tripod standing on the side. I don't care about HDMI necessarily but even Sony FX6 & FX9 have it and those are fully professional broadcast cameras used by professionals all the time. Hell even Sony Venice has an HDMI out and that is a fully professional cinema camera. Blackmagic is in the business of mainly Broadcast NOT cinema cameras FYI. As far as built in ND's I have yet to meet a cinematographer who complaints about having them built in. Yet, I know a ton of people who complain about cameras that DONT have them built in. Those built in ND's come in very handy in a pinch and even Alexa Mini, ARRI Amira, Sony Venice 2 and many other have them built in. ND's are expensive and most people who are looking at this camera probably don't have those laying around. A full set of Firecrest ND's which are very high quality will set you back $6500.00. The quality of built in ND's on an FX6 & FX9 is far better than Tiffen or Schneider by a MILE. Also, having variable electronic ND's comes with a ton of benefits especially when you need to go from outside to inside without changing your T-Stop. My 2 Cents.
@andynonimuss62985 ай бұрын
@@dimediaatl Incorrect; there is a touch LOCK switch below the screen to keep from bumping it. Traditionally, the 1st AC worked on the left side of the camera. Blackmagic already explained in detail why they did not have a flip-out screen and built-in NDs. First off, they wanted to keep the price point down to 3K. Second, they said adding built-in NDs might not be used by cinematographers who already have matte boxes, screw-on NDs, and lenses with ND blades. Not having the built-in NDs allows for more choice and flexibility. Third, they said the EVF and 7" monitor were already viewing options over the 4" screen. They have also hinted at developing a control monitor. Fourth, they wanted to keep the form factor small, light and streamlined. Fifth, Dan May already hinted at more Pyxis models coming in 2025. Maybe they will do a flip-out screen and ND version in a future model, but that option would add to the cost. Overall, Blackmagic has stated the Pyxis is for those who want a solid starting point for getting into the world of cinematography. I already have a Pyxis L-mount on preorder through B&H.

Why bother getting a box camera if you're not ready to rig it? If people can't afford additional rig cost for box camera, maybe just get a normal form factor. Left side control is pretty good for shoulder rig except for left-handed folks, you're out of luck. What bothers me is lack of internal ND for its size. It's deal breaker.

I'm 100% with you on this. That hateful camera crippling that made Canon hated by many ppl back in the days (C70 aside, really great little camera with actually little caviats). My list of wishes for a future Pro model are the same as most of ppl let down by this first version (and I guess for a reason): - Tiltable screen - Faster sensor without that huge crop at only 50p - Double XLR - HDMI out (maybe this could have a walk around tho using the viewfinder port in the future) - More codecs codec codec! It's insane to think that you have to shoot everything and solely in Braw. Despite how great it can be is not the solution for every situation. And please don't tell me that this camera can't have other recording options because is though for filmmakers shooting indie movie or music videos.. That sounds like saying, my car has only last two gears because it's thought to be used on highways.

Canon has some of the weirdest limitations I have ever seen. On C200 you can do 4K 8bit or 12bit RAW. Why they could not make it be able to do 10bit 4K is beyond me.

I don’t think people understand that the design is terrible. That you need to understand that you can’t really do much with the rigging. Yes, you can buy a monitor problem solved!! However, The display side is in the way and you can’t really do much but leave it open and that screen is a touch screen meaning you having the chances of accidental touch on the menu that can ruin your perfect shot. Honestly it’s a fair criticism and black magic needs to address. It doesn’t cost a lot to have a flip screen when the URSA have it and so many different type of cameras have a flip screen. Honestly it think a flip screen is cheap to add onto a feature add in another 5$ for a movable hinge just to have that flip screen feature. Like wtf? Make some sense and have usable features. It’s a massive miss. You can’t change the mount which it look like you can. Screen is in the way. It’s not good enough to be upgraded from a pocket 6k full frame or Pro with built in ND filter. Or from other new users that wants to upgrade to a cinema camera. It’s not good enough to be a new upgrade. It’s good for new users who wants a cine camera box. But you’re better off with different options available like AKA FX30, FX3, LUMIX S5 IIX with BRAW, pocket camera 6k G2/Pro/Full Frame, GH6, Z-Cam, LUMIX BS1H/BGH1, and more options I can think out of my head that I think it’s comparable and maybe even better design than Pyxis. I like the new direction that Black Magic is going but they need to address these design flaws. Buying more stuff isn’t problem solver when you can’t solve a problem that can’t be fixed.

@@antone9751 I have a feeling it's less of people "wanting it all for nothing" but more like he said in the video, where it feels like BM products consistently take 2 steps forward and 1 step back. Like how the 6k gave us a tilting screen, and the 6k pro gave us internal NDs, but then the 6k full frame took away prores and the NDs. So now, the box camera is what people have been asking for ergonomically, but then we lose the screen articulation and still no NDs or prores. I have a feeling it's less of people having unreasonable expectations for the cost of something for the features it gives, but rather frustration from feeling like there's constantly this back-and-forth of innovation and regression in features for BM products.
@antone97516 ай бұрын
@@javiator3007 but no cine box style cameras have flip out screens. That’s what BMD have built here. Not a all in one camcorder. Sure, it ‘could’ve have had a flip out screen but box cameras don’t really need one and a flip out screen is a huge weak point for reliability as I’ve already mentioned. No matter what box camera you are buying, you need to buy a monitor to use it properly. Why do people expect Blackmagic to give them a large bright flip out screen when other box cameras costing much more don’t give you one? I’d love internal NDs too but which other full frame camera at anywhere near the price of the Pixys gives you internal NDs? A full frame filter wheel on a camera this size is near impossible to implement due to size and Sony so it via an electronic ND filter on the FX6 that costs much more than the Pixys. BTW, have you used an FX6? Despite the price you still need an external monitor and f you really want to see what you’re shooting. The included one is fine for navigating menus but that’s about it. I do agree that BMD have dropped the ball by eliminating 10Bit codecs like ProRes or DNx, this is simply ridiculous! Again, the Ursa Minis weakness has been its flip out screen. I know five different DP’s that won them and they have all had issues with the flip screen which has rendered their camera useless until it was sent in for repair. I’d rather not have this issue and use an external monitor. You can get BPU batteries with a dtap output to power the monitor with the cameras battery so you don’t need much if any extra rigging. Just chuck the monitor on the camera and go.

Then, when the box camera is released, they don't understand its purpose. I understand and agree that the battery life and the fixed monitor on the first BMPCCs are indeed caveats, problems - among many others. But it's not the case here. It's actually what the community was asking for. I have never seen anywhere people asking for "a BM box camera with a great flippable monitor that makes it not a fully riggable box camera". I disagree. This video, like a few others, presumes that the purpose od the display is as a display, but given the interface it is an interface display that ALSO has preview ability. Lets face it if the display had only been for operating the Blackmagic OS UI that is praised be almost everyone as one ofthe best UI's around then people would have griped that it doesn't include a display for this price, and that would have been the negative argument. So instead they offed preview, because they can, and still people miss that this is the OS interface screen and NOT meant to be the primary display. The issue that I will agree with is that the ONLY two first party screen options are either the new $1695 viewfinder, which jacks the price up significantly, or the Video Assists at a much more reasonable $325-$795; however don't have camera control capability. Thus one is stuck with a third party SDI Portkeys monitor with camera control for $499 to $899. Now if one wants to go ultra budget Viltrox offers a relatively low resolution SDI monitor that would be compatible for only $160; however it would be really nice if Blackmagic made a USB or even SDI compatible High Bright screen without all the additional Video assist features, but that offered camera control for say under $300, but with that said the idea that this UI screen was a mistake in my opinion is a massive over reaction. This camera is an insane value for the style of camera it is, and for that target audience. The fact one CAN view the video on the side, to me, is just a bonus.

I have a question: how do you display an image on the Alexa? And if it's not a problem for the Alexa, why is it a problem for this camera?
@dimediaatl5 ай бұрын
Alexa has a display built in on the AC side (not operator side) for basic camera controls, not picture preview. Alexa Mini & Mini LF has a viewfinder that has an ARTICULATING display FYI. BM has historically been using its screen for camera control AND picture preview. Hence the problem is 2 fold: 1. Screen is on the wrong side for camera control (it should be on the AC side). That however can be mitigated by the BT app but it’s nevertheless a design flaw. 2. It’s difficult (to say the least) to preview the shot with the camera being on the side. I’m pointing out problems so that they can be addressed on the future editions of the product. People can buy whatever they want.
@AaronStowers5 ай бұрын
@@dimediaatl A 4" 1500 nit monitor is a flaw? I see it as a gift. There is no particular side of the camera for an AC. I was a 1st AC for 5 years, and I never once pulled focus on a specific side, let alone used a monitor to pull focus. As for Arri cameras, you need an EVF or external monitor for all of them. I have been in the filmmaking business for 28 years, and some videos I watch on KZbin have me wishing that these companies should make cameras at the 20k margin to weed some of these so-called filmmakers out of business.

The issues with this class of cameras from BMD are 1) 13 steps dynamic range is too narrow 2) rolling shutter to much visible when swiping 3) low light noise. I'd happily pay a grand more to have better full frame sensor or a S35 global shutter in a boxy form factor. Until then I won't invest in the BMD ecosystem.
@johnwaldmann52226 ай бұрын
The solution is to disassemble the camera, and remote Mount the display elsewhere on your rig. You will need a skilled technician to cable it out, and a 3D printer to protect the camera and the display, And a willingness to take risks. Sometimes it would be very useful if Black magic increased its pool of beta testers to include a wider pool of users. I don’t shoot very often, but one look and I was immediately thinking of ways to do brutal mods to this camera. That is not a good thing. But perhaps the solution is to mount a late model iPhone as a LiDAR sensor, and make use of the Blackmagic control app to run the camera control interface. And wire sights to frame your subject, if you can not afford the fancy viewfinder. My question is this how extensively can Bluetooth interact with the camera. Can you pair with more than one device? Can wifi be used for camera control; with Bluetooth being reserved solely for focus pulling? As the camera has a gyro, surely flipping the camera upside down would flip the screen’s orientation. Perhaps a software update will allow this. If nothing else that doubles the rigging options.

The definition of a cinema camera has nothing to do with the image quality. It’s the integration into a workflow. The placement is perfect for the use as a cine cam. It’s build around small crews. The placement with the Komodo for example is quite annoying. Since most rigging is done primarily on top and button. Car mounts, crane etc. it’s always easier to have it on the side if your cam is fully Mounted. The top is usually only good for minimalist setups. But for this type of shoot the raw body of the pocket is better shaped. A box shape is all about flexibility. I am able to change the mount on a sub 3K$ camera. That’s the most selling feature for me. SDI, Timecode out. Amazing. Of course this cam will be used by influencers, same with the red Komodo but that’s not the marked it was designed for. The pocket was able to attract a higher market than intended. That market is now targeted with This camera.

Again, that’s like saying “buy headlights for your car because manufacturer didn’t include those” BM has always used screens on their cameras to preview an image. They don’t include a viewfinder in there for free do they? An oversight is an oversight whether you agree with it or not.

@@dimediaatl does the Arri camera body you spend tens of thousands on come with all the bits you need to use it out of the box? Seriously dude, you shoot Arri all the time but you can’t pay a few hundred $ for a monitor? And no, not all BMD cameras come with a monitor to view the image. Do your homework.

@@dimediaatl your analogy is not even remotely relevant here. Sony include tiny monitors that aren’t really usable outside so you need to use an external monitor. Red don’t include usable monitors with their bodies so you need buy an external one . Both Sony and Panasonic make full frame video cameras that don’t include any monitor or way of controlling the camera out of the box so you have to connect them to external equipment ……I could go on. Sure, if BMD could make a robust hinge that cost more to make but that was reliable, then they could offer that for a higher price but at this price point, I think it’s a good move as any film maker worth their salt will be adding their own monitor.
