Snow Removal Operation in Montreal Downtown, 2022-02-21.
Jobs with two pass, daylight. Perfect job from Canbec and truckers on St-Denis street around Berri-UQAM. It near the end of the season, rain and high temperature started to make the snow melt, super heavy and full of water. Larue D60 mounted on a Caterpillar 938K, doing the best he can against this heavy snow.
The operation was led by Canbec Construction
- Filmed in Downtown Ville-Marie in Montreal.

How big a snowfall is needed to trigger this process city-wide, and how long does it take to clear the entire city of Montreal proper? I was a kid growing up in Pointe Claire, and this was always a highlight of the winter for me, watching the big dual-auger snowblower come down our street--usually at 3 in the morning on a school day!
@VinceLocRS
@VinceLocRS Жыл бұрын
Pretty often, every snowfall of 5cm+ I'd say. Because they cannot let too much snow to add up otherwise with the cold and snowing getting compacted everything turn into ice. As an exemple about 4 years ago, they decided not to remove the snow after a snow fall of 5-10cm because the meteo was indicating warm weather for the next days. Well they were wrong, the snow in the street never had the chance to fully melt and everything turned into ice and they lost control. 3 Weeks later the ice in some street were as thick as the sidewalk lol A good 6-8 inches.

With all the fuel used in this operation, why didn't they just melt the shit with flamethrowers and let the water run down the storm drain?
@ayuse01
@ayuse01 Жыл бұрын
It would need more fuel. And more time.
@313soldier313
@313soldier313 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think you understand the thermodynamics involved in that. Snow is self insulating, meaning it resists being melted. It would take 10x the fuel if not way more to melt all of that snow. I don’t think it plausible at all.
@dickbutt7854
@dickbutt7854 Жыл бұрын
@@313soldier313 it would take more fuel, even in comparison to both machines here driving to the site, then both machines working at the site, while the dump truck hauls it off to wherever, where I'm assuming there are more machines and processes waiting to further consume more time, fuel, and money? Seems better to melt that shit on the spot and be done
@ayuse01
@ayuse01 Жыл бұрын
@@dickbutt7854 Yes it is true , but using a flamethrower on top of snow is not the option, remember that heat rises, and cold sink. So yes, their is some snow melting machines that do melt snow, they tend to be static machines big like a semi trailer, you use a dump truck to dump snow in hot water, melting the snow almost instantly, the overflow of liquid is then piped out thru the sewer system. They do this for shopping malls, they unclog a frozen manhole and the machine dumps water continuously in the same manhole. But in the case of streets, often the manholes are completely clogged up by ice. And also for the safety of the residents, you don't want to have hot water sloshing around near the people who walks nearby , also when it is very cold outside, the water refreeze very rapidly on the ground, representing a hazzard.So it is quicker for the residents comfort sake to just haul it away and then dump it in the St-Lawrence river. -Keep on being inventive, it is a quality.
@313soldier313
@313soldier313 Жыл бұрын
@@dickbutt7854 while in theory it sounds like a great idea I can tell you it’s flawed. Look up flamethrower vs ice videos on KZbin. You’ll see it’s not as simple or economical as you would think. It takes a ton of heat energy to melt snow/ice and that’s in a controlled environment. Add to that sub zero temperatures where the recently thawed water will want to re-freeze and you’d just be making an icy mess. Also you have to think, where would they would put all that thawed water? You would flood streets melting that much snow so quickly. It’s better to collect it in its solid form and dump in into an existing water supply. However, I’ll admit I would love to see your plan in action lol. 🔥❄️
