HUGE Tank Destruction!! Growing Into This Project

It took some time to grow into this project boat. During the last two years we learned many skills and now we are confident that we can learn everything that’s needed to bring this historic sailing ship back to life.
This time we take apart a leaking steel water tank. So Daniel can improve his angle grinder skills.
Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was. When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean together with you and teach traditional sailing skills.

Daniel, a plasma cutter would be a wise investment with the amount of steel cutting you have ahead of you. The time and effort saved would offset the cost of the equipment. Please rent one and see how much time it saves over the grinder. Time is money. Edit.. a generator and large air compressor are tools you need to invest in for this project, you will use them, they make quiet generators about 9500 watts for reasonable price such as harbor freight here in the states. These are items that are going to be a necessity for your refit

@daveself6386 I was thinking the same thing. It was almost painful to watch. Even a cheap plasma cutter can be had for less than $200/$300 and they would have been done in a hour or two at the most. Time is priceless especially when a much better tool is so cheap and available. Yes ,you need a power source but you need that anyway and an air compressor which you should have as well. You cant beat a good air powered needle gun for removing large amounts of rust and debris.

The main purpose of this undertaking was to get the tank out and to get some practice with he angle grinder. As I've said in the video we will buy a plasma cutter soon and when cutting out the next tank I will use a different tool. The main problem with the plasma cutter at the moment is the low electric power in the harbor we are stranded. Compressor and plasma cutter would trip the fuse.

I don't really get it. I've talked about this subject in the video and I've said that we will buy a plasma cutter. But me in front of my computer ordering stuff we need would be a pretty boring video. Can we agree on that?

Daniel, we can't imagine how tired grinding steel gets, especially on this huge steel boat. Both you and Barbara undertook this tremendously huge project and to date have tackled each episode with bright smiles. Your generosity with sharing such a massive project is truly unbelievable. You have completed so much in a relatively short period of time and have learned so much with the demolition of Flying Coney's massive interior. As an engineer and metal worker I would suggest that buying the equipment you need for oxy - acetylene cutting is the best option for you because its a cheaper initial investment and a way of cutting steel that does not rely on electricity that you can carry with you on your journeys. This would be a very valuable resource when things go wrong in remote places. I understand the attraction of plasma equipment and have it in my workshop but to get a plasma that will cut structural steels thickness which an oxygen cutting set will deal with easily becomes a very expensive purchase and as you know requires lots of electricity but the thing people underestimate is that plasma also requires high quality DRY air because moisture in the cutting air destroys the tips and gun so you have to not only buy the plasma cutter but also a large expensive compressor and a air drying unit both of which consume lots of electricity. I was feeling for you watching you cut up that tank because cutting it with a small grinder is as you found out very hard work. Using a 9inch grinder (230mm) would be overall easier and quicker but requires more strength and technique to use safely because it is stronger than a person so if it gets out of control it can seriously injure you. Keep up the good work - all tings are possible if you are motivated and determined !!

I just wanted to chime in.. I've used both oxy acetylene torches and plasma. You do not need a huge compressor. I'm in Canada and I use my plasma cutter with a small skmpreasor that puts out about 4 cubic feet per minute at 90psi.. I can cut for about 45 seconds and the. I wait for about 30 seconds for the compressor to catch up. I spent $150 on the compressor. I'm sure you can find cheaper used ones. You are right about the dry air. It's definitely worka better with dry air. I picked up a cheap Chinese air fryer for under $100. It's filled with desiccant picks/pebbles. Basically a piece of pipe with air fittings on it that's inline between the compressor and the plasma cutter. You don't "need" it, but it helps to keep consumables done to almost nothing. I run a Miller extreme plasma.cutyer.. consumables are cheap and easy to get where I am. I think the tips and swirl cups come.in page of 10.. I bought them 15 years ago when I was building all the steel work on my boat. I still have some.lefy over. Definitely cheaper than cutting discs. one big plus for the plasma is the fact that is.doesnt heat the part as much as a has torch, so there is little to any warping. When I started with oxy acetylene, cutting through 7mm steel got.things pretty hot and deformed. the dross from the torch requires a lot of cleanup with a grinder. It's much faster, cleaner, less cleanup, with plasma..

one last thing.. I can run my plasma off a 3500w generator.. the power in my boat yard is not that great. I usually plug the compressor into a regular outlets.and run the plasma off the generator. I should have bought a 10000watt generator, but those are noisy.. the 3000w works, is more quiet, and I also use it.on the.bkat when cruising when we've had a week of bad weather and the solar can't keep up..

Next time you are using an angle grinder to cut sheet, you'll find that you will go through fewer discs if you do not cut through in a single pass - if you cut a groove in the sheet, then make it progressively deeper - you will only be wearing the edge of the disc - by plunging the disc through the sheet you are wearing both the edge and the sides of the disc - meaning you wear it away faster and use more discs overall for the same amount of cutting.

I've tried not to cut too deep into the steel. I was only going in about 5mm or so. With your technique I found it incredibly hard to see the cut with my safety gear and with the cutting guard in place. That's why the first sheet in the video was still attached at some spots. Any tipps on that?

@FlyingConey, @oomwat6101 is right on with his suggestion of the best method to cut plate that thick. To do it safely, first, you need to improve your lighting on the work area to see it better. (An exploding disk doesn't care who it sticks into when it flies apart...) Adjust a light to reflect off the fresh cut so you can follow it. Second, get some soapstone markers and a holder to keep it from breaking at a hardware or welding supply to make lines to guide you. It will make a nice white line on that rusty plate that will show you where to look for the shiny cut to follow. Last, don't cheap out on trying to make face shields last for "one more cut". When you can't see through it, clean it or change it as needed. To save money, ask around a boat shop about somewhere that you can buy disks in bulk and do some shopping.

Also I find a full face mask is good, particularly if you get one with the rip-off sheets so that as they get pock marked from the sparks you can dispose of that layer. Plasma cutter is the way forward, but hey - we don't all have a decent compressor and plasma cutter to hand. (I am in your boat)

Demolition is the best part of any restoration project. It is quite labor intensive, it is a dirty job, and yes, Daniel, it is hard work, hard work. But demolition gets rid of the material that is in the way. In this case you got access to those rusted and broken frames! You both do a wonderful job. Grind it down to bare metal. ❤

Hi Daniel and Barbara, looking at this task and what you are planning down the track, I would strongly suggest the safest and most efficient tool you could buy is a Plasma cutter, you are at more risk of hurting yourself the way you are currently doing it now.

I think your doing a very fine job ! You don’t have the budget like Yaba and Brupeg but none the less your heart is into it ! There’s no need to explain certain things like not having certain tools or materials and I think it makes your channel more real ! I’d love to have a cnc table but not in my budget ! Do you have places like Harbor Freight near you ? Just wondering ? With a plasma cutter you need an air compressor , electricity and consumables ( tips and such ) a sawzall would be nice , cordless and 18 volts or more !

That was one hell of a thick steel water tank and quite impressive to remove it with a 125mm angle grinder - think one of the new gen welder-plasma cutters may be worth looking at if you can source some power and if you plan to gain some welding fabircation/repair tasks yourself - talk it through with someone local that works in the field as the thickness of metal to be useful will be a bit higher than the average 'backyard'operation. I think the angle grinder is not always the best choice. I would suggest getting a reciprocating saw and metal cutting blades. This will easily cut through pipes and even accessible welds with much less drama. Makita make some very good battery operated recipro saws. There are corded versions but for ease of use the battery saws are much better. I would suggest a 40volt one. They are also extremely useful for demolishing wooden structures using multi purpose blades designed to cut wood with nails and screws in the wood.

Your right about YT as it has taken 2 days for your video to show up on my screen. It seems like YT has messed about with what they notify people. Maybe they are just interested in AD blockers to bother about the users (viewers and posters). Your not the only one who has a delayed showing, a lot of channels that I sub'ed to have also had delayed viewing and were only found if I went to the bottom of my screen. Yes, I have seen the video. I saw you spend a great deal of time with a grinder to cut the tank apart. An Oxy-Acetylene cutting torch (Like a gas welding torch) would be 10x faster.. Youcould cut up to 1/2' plate.@@FlyingConey

Then you have seen that we do have an Oxy- Acetylene cutting torch? Yes it's 10 times faster. But we're in the hull of a ship. What type of respirators to use? Do I need fume extraction? There are so many ways of doing this and I picked one and mentioned quite a lot other methods in the video. I would prefer nibbler over a torch because it's way cleaner and also a lot faster than the grinder.

Your woodworking skills will make you a better welder/fitter. The better the fit up the easier the weld. I built a 42' schooner back in the 70's and was a furniture/cabinetmaking instructor for 27 years. I regret that I didn't take the time on my welding fitups - the schooner would have been better. But, at least the schooner is still sailing. Good Luck!

Having a steel boat , an oxygen/ acetylene torch kit could be your best friend! Easy to learn to use. Will make working with steel so much easier and faster. Cutting , bending welding .. a good torch kit can do it all. Love the boat / channel/ you guys !! Keep up the great work .

As you've seen in the video we already have the cutting torch. But I'm not sure what else do I need and where to get it here in Lelystad. That's kind of the point of the video. Yes there's a better method or a better tool but it takes time to figure things out and to order stuff or to find a store that sells it. I have an angle grinder, I have cutting discs and power supply is strong enough for it.

Usually I'm very careful and I try not to hurt myself. What you don't see in the videos is how much trial and error there is until something comes apart. In the edit we try to make it more intense and we make it look more dangerous. Although the pipe advice is a great one there's one little stud of an old floor support that will ruin this plan.

Expensive equipment, save up all your jobs and hire the equipment, or better still, buy the equipment and sell it off when finished. Unusual equipment in good condition will still maintain its value.

Yes, there are so many many many options. I've mentioned a few. But one thing is guaranteed on KZbin. No matter how you do it there are at least some comments that are telling you you're doing it wrong. At the end things need to be done. The tank is gone, I call it a success.

On another note, I dont think a sawzall would help with that tank. That thing is like 1/4 inch plate steel. Cut off wheels or torches for a job like that.

Hi Danial Don't you worry about those other boats .Yes there flashy and crazy and loud .but there also almost done .I was one of the very first with Yab'a .They even asked me questions and advice 🤣when they started there journey .You see i have always had a boat most of my life all but one was wooden my largest was a 1953 , 53 foot Chris Craft and my first one was 10 feet long .in the early 80s i became a long haul semi truck driver i moved oversized and heavy loads all across the United States and Canada .my first real truck driving job was moving boats for 6 years .Sailboats power boats new and used steel ,wood ,Fiberglass .At this point in my life being retired i doubt i will own another one .This is why you and Barbara hold a place in my heart , you 2 are living and doing the very thing i dreamed of most of my life Not just finding and fixing a boat and sailing off to see the world on my own .But taking people with me and sharing the experience .I know an understand that feeling of looking to the horizon reading the sky and the water .I have never owned a sail boat although i have moved many of then and know how they work I would rather crew on one than own one .Danial you have a keen eye and a sharp mind ,You know how to plot a good course and how to hold fast and carry through. .Now from me a little advice from an old man who has weathered many a storm in life when you think you see a flat calm or a tempest sea coming set your brace look straight ahead and lean into it .don't forget to grin and laugh at the Fates as you sail past .Those of us that are free in mind and spirit cannot be held in check or stopped ,We will always find a course that will take us to wherever we wish to go .

Daniël, please be aware of the fire risk when you attempt to gut diesel tanks with a plasma cutter . Although diesel is a smaller fire hazard compared to petrol , it will burn . Furthermore i do ask myself how many cutting disks you had used to get this tank out of the way . Perhaps selling the scrap steel will buy you some of them back . Keep on keeping on . By the way, love your sense of humor . 😏

I still can't understand your decision that only one person works and the other films. There are many small channels where people work alone and film themselves and - with respect - they don't have worse camera work. I could never stand next to my partner and just watch and film while he struggles with something that could be done together with much less effort.

I've recently started metal work. I found a metal carbide blade for my wood circular saw. The blade supprised me as I recently cut 6mm steel plate like it was nothing. It also cuts wood with very little tear out in melanin. I'm tempted to get a larger metal carbide blade for my miter saw. I'm sure my angle grinder skills will improve to your level some day.

invest in a cut torches or a plasma cutter that is my recommendation. Even a small set of torches would be fine you don't have to get an industrial set.

Remember in insulate the steel with a foam to keep their cold out when you have another heating system in place. But the first thing is to insulate the inside skin of the boat while you can.

In this video you said your going to do the interior before you do the rigging. I know you two are always thinking Things through but I would like to suggest the idea to finnish all steelwork before starting the woodwork. Its much easier to weld Things on deck or put some fundations for winches under the deck, when there is no interior.

Wrong tip for welding, the torch held up is a a cutting torch tip . The proper term is brazing not welding.

With all that rust have you thought of getting a shot blaster, or hiring one. it would really help clean the rust of the metal and prepare it for repairs/ plating holes. As usual a great video.

There are some difficult decisions involved when it comes to blasting and coating. Every time when it seams like we have a solution we talk to someone who had made bad experiences with the exact method we want to do. Laserblasting, sandblasting, sodablasting or hydrojetblasting? At the moment it looks like we're going to do either hydrojetblasting or laser blasting.

Pro tip: you can rotate the guard on the grinder to bring the cutting edge to the side. That makes it easier to hold with the side handle attached. Some grinders have a quick release on the guard, but on others it requires a screwdriver. On a different note, I think you two are doing a great job.

The METABO does have a quick release on the guard and I used it a lot 😉 I tried to lead the sparks away from my face. The great thing about the angle grinder we use is that is has also a quick nut. So you can change discs without using a tool. You need to press the quick button and then the locking nut comes loose.

There’s no reason what so ever to think your channel is less interesting than others. To be frankly WIlleke and I love your channel a lot because the way you’re doing is forcing a lot of respect for the two of you and I’ll explain why. First of all you both are from Austria what nowadays nothing have to do with the sea. Secondly you both were a great sailing couple but never on such a big ship as Flying Coney.
