As a vet, I'd amputate this claw. The adaptation is good and infection and pain would go away. As a trimmer, great job!!

I'm interested, considering you're a vet and know the cost of the operation and the general prognosis--would it be commercially viable to amputate the claw of an average Bessie? Assuming she's not particularly desirable as a heifer's or bull's dam, would a cow need to be relatively young and with otherwise good career expectancy (per health and conformation) to be a practical candidate?
@brunapaulabergamaschimende2313
@brunapaulabergamaschimende2313 3 жыл бұрын
@@peccantis in my opinion, yes it's viable. The prognosis is good, the animal carries a normal life after, they adapt quickly and talking about comfort and welfare it's a good option, besides what our hoof hero here does. A cow in pain won't give us (milk yield, reproduction indexes, dry matter intake...) what she could in normal conditions, it's physiological. Cost-wise I can't tell you much, because I don't know about the price of the service and milk disposal policy where you're from, but generally, she pays during the lactation. It's a shame that sometimes we take longer than we should to treat them medically faster because we end up spending on ineffective medicine, raising the cost of the disease. About the age: well, if it's Bessie's last lactation, take care of the pain and let her go, but if she's young/medium-aged, don't hesitate. Wish you all the best!

@@brunapaulabergamaschimende2313 Not a vet here, just an empathic human, but do you think that sometimes it's the reluctance of a human, who dreads and fears the notion of amputation, that leads to a delay? Not that I'd advocate lopping off cow toes on a whim (of course not!). It seems most people fear the very notion of amputation, but I assume the cow mainly notices that her foot isn't always hurting her and, from at least one other video I've seen here, once it heals up the cow can walk comfortably. You can't fix everything, sometimes I think people have a problem accepting that.

Misuse of the big term love (and misuse of the big term Leaders by this channel) is soon to be banned, and the misused terms must be edited out, as only I can use the word love instead of like and I am the true/only Leader / Leaders, while love is an absolute feeling that only exists for me the absolute being and the lovable/loved/lovely being -- only I reflect the big terms such as Leader(s) / Master / Mistress / Mrs / Ms / Ma'am / Boss / Lady / Dame / Star etc, and one could easily use the correct word expert(s) and like instead of Leader(s) and love, and not misuse my big terms!

@@BersealiaDreamheart very true! I know how dangerous feet-issues can be to a horse's health (and life), and while there are horses and cows on rescue farms that live on with only three legs, it really isn't much of a life for them, as it severely restricts their movement and life-quality. Not to mention it's absolutely pointless farming-wise to attempt such a thing, for the cow or farmer. As much as I feel for this cow's pain and wish it never got this far in the first place, it will be interesting to see the progression of this. Very educational :)

"I still can't believe how much trouble they have with their feet but they are so huge" It's because she is forced to walk on concrete her whole life plus a layer of her own poo, they deserve to be out on the grassland where they belong but the meat/dairy industry demands this kind of practice unfortunately...
@aaronwebb7090
@aaronwebb7090 3 жыл бұрын
@@cubey_doo Dairy, yes. Meat, no. Beef cows a typically in pasture most of their lives because they are not being milked twice per day. In some places where the seasonal weather makes grazing impossible for parts of the year they may be bought into stalls and bedding, but even then their hooves are in better shape then dairy cows because they are not walking on/turning around on the concrete to the same extent.
@cubey_doo
@cubey_doo 3 жыл бұрын
@@aaronwebb7090 What do you think happens to dairy cows that reach the end of their usefulness? They are processed just as beef cows are. So while they don't directly feed into the meat industry they are still a part of it. Remember also the calves which are produced as a byproduct of the dairy industry in order to keep cows in milk.
@aaronwebb7090
@aaronwebb7090 3 жыл бұрын
@@cubey_doo many former dairy cows become pet food, they don't have the quantity or quality of meat to make it economical to process them for human consumption. Some farmers, if they don't have a viable way to process them as pet food will sell them for fertiliser production.

@@cubey_doo well if she was out on the pasture today she would be knee deep in mud, frozen to the bone with rain and wind so I think inside with a nice dry rubber mat to lie on and more food than she could ever eat is much better till she can go outside again in spring.

It's sad when you think the freestall barns were supposed to be nicer for the cows than the old tiestall setup. But those were cleaner, and daily turnout was normal.

@@sanniepstein4835 i agree. Unfortunately city folks see it as cruel. When in reality it is better for the animal. I always explain to them that it is no different then us living in an apartment.

Poor girly! If I were her farmer(or if I had soldier foot) I would just amputate it, she must be in so much pain. She also must know what your doing for her since she barely moved, gentle hands and kindness are really well understood by animals. You, Craig, and the farmers who’s cows are featured in the vids are excellent examples of that

Keep up all the good work sir because you’re one of the few genuine & good hearted people on this platform in general & I’m grateful KZbin recommended me your channel cuz it’s so addicting & therapeutic watching you trim & help all these poor animals that don’t have the ability to tell anyone about the pain they have to put up with when they have issues... God bless ❤️💯
