Thank you, thank you for this one! I endure 6 months of winter in Maine (NC home for 50+ years) and dream and plan for the gardening year. Then the bugs go crazy, both insect pressure on the plants and the ones biting me until I’m practically bathing in bug spray. The humidity drives me to tears and there’s no air conditioning to escape to. And on and on my whining goes. So, you have reminded me of my pledge to just get out there everyday if only for an hour. I got started late (April in Phoenix, AZ) and it was dumb of me to not just wait till fall but i was optimistic and excited to finally start my own garden (we just bought our first house). The bees took forever to start pollinating my garden, female flowers just started to show the middle of last month. I'm battling white flies and this weekend we're looking to have temps well over 115. If anything survives I'll be amazed. I have shade cloth up that it only can do so much. Needless to say i haven't harvested anything from my garden. 😭

Good morning Jess. Great video! I can almost taste those tomatoes, sliced on toast with mayo and fresh basil! Good morning Jess, I can almost taste those freshly picked tomatoes, sliced on toast with mayo and seasonings! Great job! Your heart to heart July garden chat was spot on. Try gardening in a woodland environment. Very challenging. We have one open area that gets 7-8 hrs of sun. My goal is to have a series of beds like yours. So far I have two. One is high fenced against deer and the other is a mini walk-in hoop green house. We are in N.H. Zone 4B and the green house is bursting with squash, pak choy, beans! Bed by raised bed, we will have an electric fenced productive garden by 2021. I am even happy to see the weeds, because it means WE HAVE A GARDEN!! At some point I can see us having a high tunnel. Would make life so much easier. Happy gardening everyone!

Thanks, Jess! I needed that. It's so bloody hot down here in central Florida. I can think of a hundred reasons not to keep walking the paths morning and night but once I'm out there, I get busy and forget about the A/C and YT. Then when I go inside, I realize I'm actually doing this - at 74!!!! Yes. I feel great about it and while I'm doing stuff I'm happy and totally not worrying about the news, the bills, the aches, the rest of the world. I'm thinking about the magic in my garden. It is palpable. It is refreshing. It is exhausting It is so self validating. It smells so good. It has the music of nature all around. It isn't just hot, humid Florida but a tiny piece of growing earth and it feeds my soul. My bed feels delicious when I finally sleep. Cool, clean, and rewarding. I thank God for my garden.and for your sharing videos!

Girl, you were just preaching to ME! I was getting so frustrated. It's my first time growing in this zone (8a). And my cucumbers just started getting so bitter they're inendible, the zucchini have stuff growing on them that I've never seen in other places that I've gardened, these tomato hornworms are the bane of my existence, and you're right...no matter how many green bean plants I grow it never seems to be enough. I LITERALLY just ran back in the house from spraying neem oil, only for it to start raining and washing it away😭😭😭. So I REALLY needed to hear that pep talk. I'm gonna go take a shower, have a cup of tea and try again this evening. Thanks Jess💚.

An old timer out here in rural Colorado told me when I was new out here to plant dill around the tomatoes because the horn worms love dill more, but don't damage the dill. That worked here. Maybe I can pass it on and it will help you, too?
@iartistdotme
@iartistdotme 4 жыл бұрын
You will think I'm insane but this is a true story. Fifty years ago I began gardening and raising animals without even visiting a farm before. I wanted it so badly. The first year the tomato horn worms were so horrible and overnight seemed to grow and were destroying all 100 tomato plants. I read Organic Gardening magazine faithfully for years before I even had 10 acres and it just happened that the main story that month was about a tobacco farmer. He said he was loosing ground until he tried a new method of ending the tobacco worms eating his harvest. He collected a hand full of them, blended them with water in an old blender then sprayed the solution all over his tobacco plants and no more worms So, since I knew nothing about farming at all, I decided to do the same. I grabbed a hand full of the green monsters and using a rock in a bucket of water (didn't have a blender) I mushed them up then walked the tomato plant rows and doused the leaves between two sponges. The worms were everywhere and I had no realistic hopes of anything but decided to give it the best I could. The next morning I went out and could not find a single tomato worm - none dead, just gone. I guess they smelled their dead relatives and left. All I know is it worked and from that year on I canned enough tomatoes to keep us in sauce for an entire year. Don't give up. That lesson taught me to keep going and count the losses as inexpensive schooling cheaper than college. No lost plant is a loss - just a lesson to be learned to make you wiser. Keep dreaming cause dreams do come true.

I built a huge walk in cage around my tomato bed this year because we've had problems with squirrels and birds in the past. This past week I went to pick my first ripe tomato and it and several others have been eaten. Was out on the porch at night and witnessed a rat climb up the chicken wire and get into the bed. Been so disappointed this week to find nothing but half eaten tomatoes but we are now dealing with the rat problem. Maybe I'll get some tomatoes in a week or so.

I grow most of my own produce, and sometimes it gets hard. Especially this year, where the weather in my region of Germany has been crazy; either too chilly, too hot, too wet, too dry and it goes up and down, up and down. But I know I spent all winter waiting for this season and missing the garden the way I'd miss a loved one. I grow a lot of winter crops, but it rains most of the winter and the garden mostly takes care of itself then anyway. We're right in the middle of the main growing season here, and it feels like just last week I was nursing the first seedlings into existence, and it'll go by so quickly. .

I'm struggling with feeling defeated. I am no good in the heat. I lost 9 tomato plants to wilt. I did replace some with store bought plants but they have not taken off yet. My black cherry tomatoes are beautiful but have outgrown their stakes and are flopping all over. I'm trying to figure out some means of additional trellising to help them. I did plant too much and and learning to follow your example and am slowly changing my mindset of more more more! Anyway...Thank you for the pep talk. I dream off growing enough tomatoes to supply my needs for a year by canning. Same with peppers: drying and hot sauce etc. I am feeling more encouraged now...Enjoy your tomato sandwich!!!

As a suggestion for the overgrown cherry tomato plants, let a few side shoots form and you can clip them off when they're 4-10 inches long, root them, and replace the gigantic plant with them. They will be about the same maturity and won't need a long time to develop before flowering (or might flower immediately), but will have much more room to grow. I lost all my peppers to bacterial wilt except for one plant, so I understand! It's too late in my area to replant peppers so I'm planting flowers into the gaps

Keep your chin up!!! We all have failures. I am no master gardener...I am still learning even after all the years that I put gardens in. To me, it's always an experiment as to what will do well each year. I am always learning something new to try. And I like to grow stuff you can't find in the grocery store.

Heather Foley have you tried some dwarf varieties, they are a game changer and they have a large variety of tomato taste profiles so canning is still an option. I have 37 indeterminate varieties and 7 dwarfs and I will be reversing that next year, they’re just so much easier and only get 2-3 feet tall. Don’t give up, you’ve got this 💪

I needed to hear that today! How did you know! My tomatoes are 11 feet tall, I’ve know I’ve tied and tied and tied until there is literally no more room and they are vining back down ! Yet I hate to give up on them because they have been the best producers I’ve EVER had!! Thanks for the pep talk!❤️🙏

I just keep adding sticks and keep tying them lol. I pick until frost. This year, no clue how my tomatoes will do. Spring was horrible and now it is so hot, they will likely do their main production in the fall. It has happened before where fall was amazing. Then again, sometimes it is just a bad tomato year. But the garden always gives something. I have already had meals of chard and beet greens and flavored with chives and green onions and got yummy garlic and onions and basketfuls of plums. And I am shaking a bowl of umeboshi that smell delicious. Oh and of course, sprouts and piles of seeds. So while it may be slightly unpredictable, a garden is wonderful and I would never be without.

My squash are doing well, and my greens did great in the spring. But my other stuff is on the struggle bus with a promising start but are kind of petering out before reaching their peak. With everything I have found... Just don't give up. It's usually salvageable. And if not... You learned something.

Thank you sooooo much for this encouragement! Getting up early and napping mid day. Wearing bug bracelets and back at it in the evening if not to hot. Picked berries and 🍒 in the heat putting up several pints/qts for just two of us while waiting on our garden to give us red tomatoes. First one half red, split out on two sides from rain and heat then nibbled by a critter 😢. More wait as we harvest our first dozen cukes and the spring plantings last beet eaten. We are older but press on. Our “back 40” of this small city lot needs weed whacked. We could easily be the ones with a garden filled with weeds as the “back 40” threatens to creep into our beds. Letting it and the grass go a bit but the garden is weeded. Priorities 😂. Can’t do both in this heat. Seeds trays started for fall planting but forgot to cover and the rain washed them out. Will start more. Pickle canning tomorrow and peaches by the weekend. Picked my best looking blushing tomato so it doesn’t fall to the same demise as the first and wait it’s ripening on the counter. Tonight exhausted, but grateful. Assessing already. Need more color. Add flowers less corn. Exhausted in the heat. Do we even need to be doing this? Then your words remind, soon it will be cooler and easier. It will be here before we know it. Thanks again!

Thank you for that talk. I needed that. I am having issues with my tomatoes. I am so used to having lots of tomatoes when living in Illniois and now that I am living in Idaho, the conditions have changed, and I don't have but a few. I have noticed blossom drop, and maybe i pruned them too much? I was so used to watering all the time back there and here, it don't rain, but there is no humidity so maybe i need to water less? It is all a learning experience all over again and i am getting frustrated. I am dealing with something that keeps eating on my plants, too...aphids maybe. Something else i have never dealt with. I am trying...and you said, keep trying..and take notes. Thank you.

Thank you for the pep talk. I am a 5th grade teacher gearing up for my 30th year in the classroom (hopefully in the classroom), and I am so excited to plan my ”garden” for next years munchkins. I am always so excited to begin planning, getting the names of my next group of babies, setting up my classroom, and putting in the work for a great start. I will remember this ”little talkin’ to” when it gets tough. When it is easy to give up because you aren’t getting the fruit you planned to plant. Maybe, some years you mixed up your seed and munchkins aren’t showing as much progress in reading as you had hoped. Some years you see your babies learning to be kind and supportive of their classmates. Some years you see tech skills growing faster than math skills. It is great to remember that a harvest is worth celebration. Maybe what you tried to plant and cultivate is hibernating within the soil for another season. Thank you for all that you do. You are in my prayers.
