I was in high school when MARTA rapid-rail service began. One Sunday afternoon, a group of us rode from Hightower station to Decatur station and back. Everything was shiny, new and clean, with soft, cushioned seats.

For the Traction Motors these would have been sent to either New York MTA Subway and Boston MBTA Streetcar system For your European subscribers they call it Trams Germany Stadtbahn or Straßenbahn. These MARTA Trains have the same propulsion system found on New York City R143 R142A R188 family 7211-7936 & MBTA Type 8 trolley European terminology Trams. Looking at the northbound Norfolk Southern train it has the following formation ES44AC UP ES44AC Two SD40-2 or GP38-2 units combined

Negative sir! These cars are original they were never overhauled so they do not have the same propulsion as the overhauled fleet or any of the other fleets you mentioned. The sound these make is completely different than the MiTrac propulsion found on the refurbished cars running today
@tommythomason61872 жыл бұрын
I always found it a good system, though poorly managed at times. Trains, buses and stations were always clean, and if you were lost there, just about any bus would get you to a rail station and you could go from there. Maps of the city and MARTA lines at the rail stations. The ride is as smooth as silk and acceleration very sharp. Early on, MARTA allowed no advertisements on the outside of it's buses, as it sought to establish a solid corporate image. Eventually though, ads generated a lot of money for the system. Before there was MARTA, there was The Atlanta Transit System, with it's orange and silver, GM, "New Look," buses. They also had the durable, "Old Look," GM buses, painted orange and cream- colored - with gum ball machines in the back of the buses. A ride cost 10 cents. It went up to 15 cents, then a quarter when MARTA took over.

MARTA and the City of Atlanta are planning on turning one of the (yet-to-be?) retired cars into a permanent learning center for the StationSoccer program we have, so if they feel safe enough to do that, what with the tornadoes we occasionally get here, they would almost certainly be fit to serve as tiny houses with the proper foundation!

That French locomotive alone belongs in a museum! A bit of foreign power on American soil! I know some Chinese steam locomotives, countless Canadian engines (most in non-preservation service), a handful of German steam locomotives, at least 2 British locomotives, and a Swedish steam locomotive exist here in the USA in preservation, but never knew there was a French locomotive here in the USA!

I never knew Atlanta had a subway-like system, let alone any form of rapid transit. This car move reminds me of one I saw recently, when a DBR diesel locomotive was moved by road from Tauranga to her new home in Waihi (DBR is the locomotive's classification, and this was in New Zealand).

Great video, and great example of partnerships that benefit those interested in history. A few weeks ago, we passed at least two semi-trucks on I-75 somewhere between Atlanta and Knoxville (can’t remember where) hauling old single MARTA coaches. Apparently they have donated or sold other pieces of rolling stock to other groups. Again, great video, great channel. As a 30+ year NS retiree, I appreciate the way you run the channel. Very informative, professional, and objective. Keep up the great work!

Surprised to hear the MARTA car weighing in at 81,000 even factoring in those wheels/axles and the electric motors. MARTA must go back further than 1979. I moved there that year and it seemed then like a pretty well-established light rail system.

I work for WMATA (the DC Metro), Silk Road is the same contractor we use for moving rail cars. It’s nice they let you film, WMATA almost never allows visitors, let alone KZbinrs to visit the yards and film operations. Also employees aren’t allowed to use their phones or film things either. About the Only helicopter the USA had, that could pick up a 'Subway' car, was the Sikorsky, "Sky Crane". Those were built, to carry, 'pods' of, military equipment, and ammo, in places like the Southeast Asia, areas! Mountainous American areas, used them, with, Tanker-Pods to fight Forest Fires! Maybe, the C-5 Galaxy, could squeeze in 2, side by side, but that means, loading, at a Military Airport!
