Well, that's one way to throw out millions of dollars in 10 seconds!

We were there that weekend racing a single seat Can-Am car. For some stupid reason the stewards did a split start and when the crash occurred with the first group the second group was not waived off. They had a full head of steam coming up and over the blind hill and had no where to go. Put a real damper on the weekend.

Wow, any injuries? Those cars were not designed to absorb the impact. Those drivers took a beating!

Worst injury was a broken arm according to wikipedia.

I was there , 3 ambulances and one life flight . It was a real mess , 17 cars in all involved in the wreck , including a couple of original 427 Shelby Cobras , that's tough to handle at a million dollars each . But any of these historic race cars are valuable , they start at around a hundred grand then figure another couple hundred grand in restoration . Is a 69 Camaro worth 300,000 dollars , No , it's the cars racing heritage that makes them valuable , all there cars are genuine vintage race cars and they are presented in as raced condition . The cars are generally safe , one thing that you are allowed to modify is safety equipment , the cars have to have modern safety equipment , most people think that the drivers in these historic events !ore or less just take parade laps around the track , as you can see that's not the case , these guys were doing upwards of 100 mph when this wreck happened . from what I remember one of the drivers cut in too quick for the upcoming turn and hit another cars left front sending him into a spin , I can't remember if the first driver was brake checked or not , not deliberately , but attempting to slow too early for the turn . I was at another event the following year , and I believe all the damaged cars were repaired .

@@rjkoeller4444Nah, this was a long ways from the next turn, at the start of the race. The green had just dropped. What I had heard was that someone missed a shift during acceleration. Got hit from behind, and it went from there. Just repeating what I heard. At the time, I was actually sitting in the autograph tent with Mario Andretti (just out of frame). They pulled him out just to go see the carnage.

Oh man to be there at 1:30 and seeing those other cars driving by without a scratch cause they were not trying to win on the first lap.... Like JJ commented on the new NASCAR stage format that the 48 team was a 3/4 race team and that's when they "came alive" for the wins and championships. Hate to see such fine machinery torn up like this.

Oh your not kidding! I was clutching my hands in front of my face and grimacing like I was watching some horrific murder in a horror movie. Can you imagine the cost of what happened in those few seconds? I personally think a lot of these cars are priceless because once they are gone, they are gone!

I was in one of those in a Formula Ford some 35 years ago but as I was well-qualified, I was ahead of it. The thing is that at RA and other places that attract large groups in amateur classes, that hill presents a blind spot that can't be moved so the flag at those events needs to be moved further down the track toward T-1. Either that or a No Passing Zone on the first lap needs to be established long enough to get everyone rolling and not trying to win in 3rd gear from Q-20. Maybe something like Mid-Ohio where the starts are on the back straight. If you can't fix the design problem (that hill) work around it.

theboyx3 Hey Mr. boy , I go to auto shows and all i see are little Boring cars, last one i was at the superdome and they had a million little 1968 camaros and no Big 1968 Cadillacs . I was pissed , i almost wanted my dinero back!!!! I hope no one was hurt, but im tired of seeing people CONSTANTLY restoring 68 camaros, i think we have enough by now.

Elvis Presley maybe that because it cost more to fix up a big cadillac than it does a camaro. If you are so concerened with it sell your blue suede shoes and by your own cadillac to restore.
