I read about and tried a solution for if your paper is curled after it dries. Wet the back side of the dried paper, just like you're preparing to do a wet wash, lay it paint side down, weigh it down with books or something like that, and it will dry flat. Magic! And it only took overnight. A little scary the first time I tried it, but it worked like a charm. Thank you for the videos!

Great video. Just beginning this adventure. Used to painting toll paintings on wood, so this is a brand new medium for me. Have to learn completely new techniques. The paint, the brushes used, and paper are so, so different from wood!. I was getting frustrated until I accidentally ran into your videos. Thanks so much for making this possible for me. I've been in stage 5 isolation in a retirement home for over 2 months, now, due to this covid-19 virus (I'm not sick) and art is one of the tools keeping me sane (love to sketch).

Hello 🙋🏻♀️ I want to add to Clover and Dot’s Micron issues. Heretofore I’ve never heard of anyone experiencing any problems and was perplexed why this was occurring. I listened to your troubleshooting -I thought the same thing, however the materials I use with Micron are: Daniel Smith Watercolours; Arches 300g/140lbs watercolour paper & both natural and synthetic brushes. I have used both wet/wet & dry/wet techniques and still have the same issues as Clover and Dot. Maybe it is from an old batch. I thought it was important to add my problems because maybe it’s not an old batch causing these problems, maybe it’s something more serious. Thank you. Excellent video,

That is a Super Great Idea using the tracing paper over the paint swatch references! (Q&A starting at the 34:07 timestamp) I think that is a valuable tool to take the time to do! Thank you for showing that idea! I think using the slim strip sticky notes placed on the tracing paper would be an added tool to remind you which colors you are getting low on and need to re-order. Another thought about the sticky notes: Adding a 2nd piece of tracing paper noting the purchase date, supplier purchased from, and price might be useful? Your sticky notes could be placed on that layer. Q&A timestamp starring at 48:18. Watermarks (pigment load issues) - that was a good sample to show how that issue can be solved. I've not done very much watercolor since my two classes in 1994-95 - just a little bit for the next 5 years when dabbling with art while my kids were still very young. I hope to start again Spring 2018. I remember having those issues and now I know what to watch for. My memory from those classes --- well, I've slept a lot since then! LOL. Your videos are EXTREMELY helpful and chocked full of great tips! I appreciate ALL the time it takes to put into all of the videos, not to mention all the preparation for making samples, finding archived paintings to refer to, and research when needed! Kelly Lamb

I would like to comment on the Micron archival ink pens.. When I first started out making cards, I was using these pens and I still am. I like them a lot. I really did not pay too much attention as to why the ink smeared occasionally. I thought it was strange because they were not supposed to do that. Now that this question was brought up in your Q & A video I decided to experiment to see what I was using that caused that reaction. Well, I put a mark using the micron pen down the length of a piece of watercolor paper and began placing a strip of color across the line using different mediums. I found that the Micron archival ink pen smeared with the Spectrum Noir, Spectrum Noir Colorista and with the Bic permanent marker. There was no reaction with plain rubbing alcohol and the reason I decided to test the alcohol was because I read that the Spectrum Noir was alcohol based. I wish I could post a picture of my experiment but can’t figure out how to do that. In addition, the other mediums I used were Windsor & Newton water color, Arteza water color brush pen with water, & Distress ink with water. None of these caused a reaction.

Hello Meredith, My name is Casey. I wanted to take the time to let you know how much I LOVE and have LEARNED from your videos!!! I LOVE and have always LOVED art, and always will! Art is a very, very broad term. It is also VERY expensive. I also believe that knowledge is priceless! I believe what draws me to your videos is your enthusiastic and passionate way you spread the knowledge and love of art!! I think art is very therapeutic in many ways. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!!!❤️I would love to try out watercolor card making (by far Dr. PH Martin's liquid watercolor and card making) but both are so expensive. I think that the vivid and bright colors would make great cards for sick children and the elderly. Lately, I've been doing some soul searching ( trying to find ways to help my Mom realize that she can spread her artistic self of joy to others without even leaving our house. We lost my Dad last year and I do really worry about her!! She doesn't have good health, live on limited means and she is extremely all to herself...only leaves our house when it's necessary...she has been like that my whole life so nothing new there but I believe in my heart that she could benefit in so many different ways seeing her love art help others...even something as simple as a smile. She has always really enjoyed going to art stores. Daily I tell her that we need to harness how artistic she is and give it to the world. Even better figure out a way to make money doing what she loves! I know my Mother (she's a humble artistic person) my daughter, and I could truly benefit from making things for others who need to see ALL the love that is still in this crazy world. The holidays are very lonely for many...including myself. So, I guess what I'm trying to say/ask...do you know where or how to find inspiration that could send me in the right direction??? Very vivid, bright cheery colors...and any places to find cheaper card making supplies?? Especially this time of the year. Once again, I TRULY do appreciate the knowledge, time, and passion you put into your artistic journey in life! 🙂 Also, I love the way you swatch colors! And was wandering if you could make a tutorial video on making a color chart. I absolutely love how you used the tracing paper to keep all the colors identified. I've seen many charts but yours is by far the best one yet!!!! Thanks for your time, Casey
@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo8 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Casey! Thank you so very much for your lovely and thoughtful comment! It makes me so happy to know that others are finding comfort with me in their artistic journey!! :) As far as supplies goes, I would recommend looking this week on sites like www.dickblick.com and www.jerrysarterama.com for awesome black Friday deals on card making supplies. You can also check for specific supplies on amazon, they often beat out everybody else's price on specialty items. Art supplies are never cheap but I've tried to build up a nice little collection of them over time, and that has allowed me to always have a sort of backlog of them to use. If you really need something super inexpensive, you can pick up some paints at your local dollar store and pop them out of their container. If you dissolve them in just a little cup of water, you can get them to be nice and thick, and more vibrant than they would be otherwise. I would also recommend googling art contests (either in your area or nationally) that you could enter a piece of artwork in. Oftentimes, the prizes are more art supplies or money. I know that DickBlick's site hosts a lot of these types of contests. You could also try garage sales or thrift stores but that's more hit or miss. Inks can be great substitutes for vibrant watercolors so you may want to consider those as an alternate option. They are often less expensive as well. And for finding inspiration, I recommend the KZbinr Lindsay Weirich, otherwise known as The Frugal Crafter. She has TONS of videos about card-making and she uploads new, creative videos every single day. You can also look out on my channel, as I am planning to have an awesome giveaway in the near future, so perhaps you could win some supplies from that! :) Hope some of this helps you and thank you so very much for watching!! I hope you have a lovely day! :) Best, Meredith

About MICRONS and PAPER BUCKLING: I've always had trouble with MICRONS bleeding in watercolor, too. I hesitate to say it's a bad batch of pens, as my two sets were purchased at different times from different places. And I'm certain it doesn't have anything to do with the paint, as I just tested them with clear water and had the same problem. (I drew lines with a Micron, waited about ten minutes, dropped some water on top, let it sit for a few seconds, and then rubbed the brush over the ink a few times. The lines faded, and the puddle of water turned gray.) Assuming we're all using regular, drinkable tap water, the only remaining variable is the paper. I'd be interested to know if the person who asked the question ( Was it "Clover and Dot"? I can't remember now.) has been using Strathmore 400, too. As far as PAPER BUCKLING goes, I was taught that all watercolor paper is *supposed* to be stretched (submerged in water for five or ten minutes, smoothed onto a board, held fast with gummed paper all the way around, and left to dry overnight before you start to paint), unless you want to pay the extra money to buy it in block form (in which case it's already held down on all four sides). It sounds like a pain in the neck, I know--and the truth is, you won't want (or need) to do it all the time--but do yourself a favor and try it just once. It really does make painting easier. Barry Toshio Shiraishi has a great (and funny) video called "Why & How to Stretch Watercolor Paper" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKKxnWZ5abqhmJo) that shows the difference between painting on stretched and unstretched paper, demonstrates exactly how to do it, and even proves that you can watercolor on computer paper if you stretch it properly!
@SunnysEyes8 жыл бұрын
ten minutes may not be long enough drying time for microns, especially if you are in a humid enviroment. I usually ink my drawing and then paint the next day. I have never had a problem with them bleeding once they are dry. areas of ink that are saturated or have heavy lines will take a little longer to dry.

Hi, I enjoyed the video, great info I`m sure I can use. I am thinking of getting a better water colour paint set than the one I have...what are your views on the Gansai Tambi water colour paints?
@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo8 жыл бұрын
+SpaceFarmGirl Hi there! I'm so glad you liked the video and that the info was useful to you! The Gansai Tambi have been very popular recently, particularly with calligraphers and rubber stampers. I'll just give you a quick overview on them: PROS: They are highly pigmented like artist grade colors but cost about the same as student grade paints. The big pans they come in allow you to use bigger brushes for mixing. Some of their sets have neons & metallics! :) CONS: They tend to be more opaque than traditional watercolors (something I have found to be true with almost all asian manufactured watercolor brands,) which makes them turn to mud faster when mixed with one another. They organize their colors by number, rather than name, which can be a nuisance if you're trying to match a supply list for a specific class or tutorial. All in all, they're great watercolors for a few specific types of painting styles. Wether or not they're the right option for you really just depends on what you plan to paint. Hope that helps and thank you so much for watching!! :) Best, Meredith

@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo9 жыл бұрын
+Vinodhini Murali Hi there! You could absolutely use any glass or ceramic bowls as palettes, but I would recommend you try using a plate instead if you have one, as I think it would be difficult to mix multiple colors in a bowl without them blending together, but if you only had one per bowl, you'd be fine. I have picked up a couple, and so far I am having great luck and it works beautifully. I wanted to know the differences and the pros and cons. I am a beginner and want to know what you think. =) Tfs!
@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo7 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I'm so sorry for the delay in my response; sometimes comments get lost in the shuffle and I didn't see yours until just now! Water brushes are definitely a great tool in the watercolorists arsenal. They're obviously great for painting on the go but I also love that even if they are empty you can still just use them like a regular brush. The only real cons I've noticed personally with water brushes is that the bristles seem to wear out faster on me. They also don't hold their shape as stubbornly as my beloved regular synthetic squirrel brushes. But I think there's also a lot of differences in quality between water brush brands, so they're a great thing to have on hand but I personally wouldn't choose them over my regular brushes. It's totally an individual preference thing, though. :) Hope that helps and thank you so much for watching! Have a lovely day! :) Best, Meredith

So I live in Sweden, and I'm 15 years old I've been drawing for 5 years. But I haven't started doing watercolors until recently so whenever I draw with my watercolor (I'm not sure which brand it just says watercolor) But it gets like very spread if I don't use a lot of water. Even if it's a dark color and I want that dark color it still gets really messy, is it the watercolor or pencils ? Or me? I've used a lot of water and that works but the color gets pretty faded and it still gets a little messy

I would like to draw my lineart with brush so yeah
@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo8 жыл бұрын
+Howdy Girl Hi there! If you're trying to use your watercolors for lineart than I have a couple things you could try to keep it less messy: #1~ Try using watercolor pencils. I use mine as almost exclusively a drawing medium and just wet certain areas of my finished drawing lightly with a damp brush to activate the paint and get subtle washes. #2 ~ Don't actually draw with it. Try putting down a pen ink drawing first and use the lines as guide to fill in with watercolor. You could also put the watercolor down first and draw with pen ink over the top of it when completely dry. Either way, just make sure your pen has waterproof ink. #3 ~ Use a tiny brush. This will help you better control the flow of any color paint. The smaller the brush tip, the more it will feel like a pencil or a pen. You will have to reload more often but you will have control throughout the process. And for all three methods, try to make sure you're using paper that's designed for watercolors, 140lb hot press would be best for drawing, but the same weight in cold press would certainly work too. Hope that helps and thank you so much for watching!! :) Best, Meredith

+Howdy Girl Pencil lead is made by mixing graphite and clay. If you're usign regular art pencils it is likely that the amount of clay in them is more and it will separate far easier from the paper when you put in the watercolor, 'smudging' your piece. Another possibility is that you're using way too much pencil on your watercolor, it is best to make your draft first in a separate paper and then pass it over to your watercolor paper with the less amount of lines possible. I also recommend you to try a harder lead pencil (H, 2H), it has less clay and therefore will spread less.

Oh I'm sorry, it's the other way around: harder leads contain more clay, therefore the pigment stays more; softer leads have more graphite, which is looser and 'smudges' your work.

You do not answer the question why use watercolour white. It is to change the hue to creamier shade. It makes it opaque

You need to let micron pens dry fully before you use watercolour.

swtching camera views every time she shows an example reqires a lot of editing and changing the camera around. especially if she has only one camera. this video probably required very little editing, just adding text. if she skipped the text she could upload straight to youtube. its a difference hours in the editing process.

Why don’t you show your face when you’re not demonstrating paints? Watching you wave your hands around is annoying.
