This incident happened in the Port of Hamburg on the Ferry "Tollerort" on line 68 bringing some Airbus Plant employees to work in the morning. According to the Police three people sustained minor injuries, i.e. cuts from shards of the broken window. The ferry, which is part of the Hamburg public transportation system, was never in peril and moored at a terminal where the passengers could disembark. The injured were treated by a doctor of the public transportation operator. One was treated as outpatient at the hospital (everything covered by insurance). One lady, who got soaked and also sustained cuts on her hands, went to work after receiving treatment from the operator's doctor. The glass panes are supposed to withstand such stress and this has never happened before, which is why the incident is now under thorough investigation by the operator and the authorities concerned.

In situations like these people study other people reaction in order to establish that what they feel can be confirmed. The red guy taught at first that the damage isn't so big maybe he's in danger but didnt know for sure how big the danger is since he never met such kind of a situation. So if he couldnt rely on previous experiences he would rely on his self instinct with the help of others instincts . But for the first moment he was unable to understand the room instinct to conservate. All the people were shocked so he was too. Lets think about this scenario: he was the only one in that room. Or he was only with one of his beloved ones. He would've acted instantly in raport to those inside that bar. He would've reacted more scared if he was alone and more conservative and he was more fast on reacting protective with a closed realtive/friend/love. The unknown people dynamics the lack of trust actually shows in his incapacity to understand the danger as a group all together and act as a group in the face of danger. Germany is a individualist society and this is one of the consequences of having so many individualists in the same place in a situation like this. My take.

Such weather conditions are not that uncommon in Hamburg during winter. The harbor ferries - which run services like common city buses - are built to withstand those conditions. That's also why they are operating in such weather conditions. It's the first time that a window failed on those ferries. To get an idea here the schedule of this ferry line #68 Teufelsbrück dep.: 5.25 5.33 5.:39 ... Airbus (ferry pier) arr.: 5.32 5.40 5.46 ... Thus a 7 min trip across the river Elbe with 2 boats running parallel in opposite directions. The schedule is adapted to the working hours of Airbus. The captain (no other crew on those ferries) did not notice the incident. And as the ferry was really close to the pier anyway it stopped there as usual and the passengers got off-board. At this point of the (short) trip of this ferry, the passengers would also normally have started to get out of their seats towards the exit. The man in front of the window was only lightly injured. And was treated by the medical department of the Airbus factory this ferry does serve.

As long as the boat doesn't flip over it should be fine. Pumps typically handle the overeasy fine. The problem is wave hitting from the side and flipping the boat. As long the boat can sail into the waves it is fine. That is harder said than done of course in those conditions
@_nauticaldisaster_2 жыл бұрын
Any water that doesn't drain out the scuppers (little drains that lead to the side of the vessel and drain out rainwater or waves) will make it's way into the bilge in the hull which can be pumped out with the bilge pump. I've seen this happen in the coast guard. A big wave smashed our bridge window. It's scary but water makes it's way onto the vessel often. It's designed to manage the excess flooding. It's also why you'll often see power outlets at eye level instead of closer to the floor like at home. Decks can easily flood so it prevents the risk of electrocution when it does happen.

Normally nothing would happen, this was a storm with winds over 120km/h. Obviously you don’t wanna get on a boat in such conditions, but in calm weather it’s great.

Did they say what happened? Did the force just bust through that window like it wasn’t designed for that? Or did it get by debris? I feel horrible about the person who was sitting right in front only to get bombarded by glass and ocean water😮
@louiscypher4186 Жыл бұрын
The force just burst it through. These are not what most people associate with "ferry services" they are glorified river boats. Yes that happened on a river. The river does from time to time get quite choppy so these little boats have a bulbous bow to stop waves being able to smash over the top. This was just a particularly nasty storm, but it's rare enough that it's not worth it to fit proper storm windows.

Waves have snapped entire boats in half before. A single litre of water weighs one kilogram; given the size of that wave, I’d imagine hundreds or thousands of tons of force were acted upon the glass. There aren’t that many materials that can withstand forces like that, and the ones that can are very expensive. My guess is that they simply weren’t expecting the weather to turn out like this

@@SupremeST25 or maybe simple fatigue of material. It can withstand 1000 hits but 1001st may break it.

The boat ran into that wave at a 0° angle like a car that hits a tree. If the wave would have come diagonally the boat would just have listed a bit and the water would have been deflected.@@NuSpirit_

Anyone know what ferry this is?
@Guy-lo3ld Жыл бұрын
That looks scary to me since I don't have much experience at sea. I think I would really get seasick with that many waves and the rocking of the vessel. Anyway, glad to know there weren't any major injuries.

It didn't happen at sea. It happened on the river Elbe in Hamburg
