You might have missed the memo that movies are entertainment. If they exactly imitated real life, they'd be boring as h*ll. However, I know many people who had extremely romantic proposals. My own mom took my dad back after he wrote her a poem telling her that her love had made his heart pure. But I guess that also didn't happen because it's not something the average dolt would have enough imagination to say in real life. 😂

I think in the whole, imagine meeting a famous person and them falling for you-dream like scenario, the character of Anna is shown to be flawed and real so it punctures the dream altogether, just because they are famous doesn’t mean they’re perfect. I like the way they did that. ❤

This is one of my favorite rom-com movies. Hugh Grant acted like any guy who would be fortunate enough to get involved with a famous actress. As for Julia Roberts, knowing a little about her personal life, this part for her was really a mirror of her true love life. Roberts dated MANY of her male co-stars. She is now in a long-term marriage with a man who is NOT A MAJOR PERSONALITY. Roberts met & married a man who worked in the film lighting industry. Roberts met him when he was working on the lighting of one of her films. Of all the famous leading men/singer Julia had relationships/engagements/married, Roberts basically ended up marrying an average guy, more like a Will Thacker. So playing the role of Anna Scott was no effort for her. Regardless, it's a very romantic and funny movie that I always enjoy re-watching. The entire cast was great. You did a good job reacting to it. Other Julia Roberts rom-coms worth watching (if you haven't already) are Pretty Woman & My Best Friend's Wedding. Thank you!

Anna was always sincere with William, but she also has always put her career first. She was petrified of negative press, as if it meant everything. It wasn't until she realized he was more important than her career, she was free to love him fully back. He was refreshingly unassuming, charming, and... dashing, and it won her over.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I think you might be confusing 'sincerity' with honesty. Two different meanings. She was sincere but she wasn't always honest, and that was due to her.... putting her career first. As she said, 'any time she had a relationship with someone 'normal' it always turned into a disaster'. If she wasn't sincere she wouldn't have shown up as his date for the family dinner, when no one knew she would be there.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I dont think she lied. She went to Britain with no intentions of finding love. But once they went to Will's house after the juice spill and she saw how he was reacting to her and caring for her as a human rather than a movie star, that was the moment she fell for him. I think her relationship with her boyfriend would have ended anyway. And the second time she left him, she felt a bit betrayed considering she went to Will to escape from the negative press of the British media only for Spike to ruin everything.

Regarding William going to see Anna at the set, there was a cut scene at the restaurant where his friend urged him to go to her, look her in the eyes and tell her, he's the man for her. William then said what if Anna said he was a nobody, what then? The answer was his heart would be broken, but he would get over it and go on with his life. If he didn't, for the rest of his life, he would always wonder what might have been.

The best thing about Notting Hill is that the supporting characters all have personality that make them standout and unique. They are not just background characters. I think Anna never intended to fall in love with Will. Its only after she and Will interacted after the juice spill that she fell for him because for the first time probably in her life she found someone who treated her like a normal human being than a movie star. The second time she left, she felt kind of betrayed inadvertently because she came to Will to avoid the ravage press surrounding her tapes only to land in a bigger mess due to Spike. But at the you genuinely saw that she had truly fell for him completely. It also shows that Anna, even though she is and lives like a celebrity, is also flawed and is not perfect like the "Goddess" everyone claims she is. And Will is the first person who treated her in a fair way. And that blew her away. Whether its his honesty in the book store or the apricots in honey, etc.

This why you like Bridget Jones's Diary so much, it's the same screenwriter! I don't think you realize fully the timing of the movie. It isn't really made clear, but *months* go by between each time William and Anna see each other. She had actually been out of her former relationship (privately) for a long time before sleeping with William. The press just hadn't been in the loop about the break-up in a timely fashion. She's not doing anything wrong when she sleeps with William. She wants a relationship with him, but then the paps find her and she reacts badly....and then having reacted badly, she doesn't know what to say to him to fix things. I think you are being a bit too hard on her. ;)

I realize very few ppl pay attention to what she says but build up scenarios as to her character. She literally screamed I HAVE A BOYFRIEND when she was arguing with William as she tried to get out of his home. So no! She had not broken up with her BF. She said previously complicated but Complicated doesn’t mean she ended it. She was cheating JUST LIKE SHE DID WHEN SHE KISSED HIM (her bf being an ass does not change the fact that she was cheating) and she was treating William like rubbish. She was not a victim in that scene. I understand the need to make her a romantic but she was cruel and if she didn’t ‘almost’ beg Will - I wouldn’t have asked Will to take her back.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. you ignore her next line: "well, yes, as far as they [the press] are concerned, I do." In fact, the relationship had been long since over, the press just was not aware of that fact.

Exactly. She said Yes. She has a bf. She had a BF (according to me, the BF, William , the press and her because she lived for their affirmation ) when she kissed William the first time. She had a BF when she was intimate with him. She cheated then and again (by press standards). I’m hard on her because she was disrespectful. She could have walked away in peace but she was rude (a foul temper as William described it). It’s bad enough to hurt someone but to hurt someone who has always been kind and courteous to you… is painful.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. except that in reality, no, she did NOT "have a bf". Only in so far as the press knew, because she hides from them the *true* details of her life. As do most celebrities with at least half a brain. You are judging her on the public details as if they were true, when you know they are, in fact, not. Kindly stop. You have now made my point for me twice. It's frankly exhausting.

48:28 I think you are taking this a bit too literally. She just stayed there for one day. And she did not make the whole breakup with her American boyfriend public. Only she and William knows about it. She came to run away from the press who was harassing her with pictures of her past. And then due to Spike, she has landed in controversy once again. She got angry. And thats a natural human reaction. See you are expecting perfection but thats not the real world.

Well it’s just pure fantasy and unrealistic on every level so it’s really escapism for the viewer. Love the subtle humour, love Ronan Keating’s version of When you say nothing at all. Entertained and my take is if you got a chance to have sexy time with a celebrity would you? Answer bloody oath I would

I thought Julia Roberts' character was HORRIBLE in this film. I could not understand why anyone would want her. She was just so disdainful and unappealing and humourless.

If you watch closely, she does try to improve and open up. Narcissists are compulsively bad but some are horrified at themselves.
