It’s only awkward because the interviewer is asking ridiculous questions in an overly upbeat manner and Hugh doesn’t feel like answering them in the same way. A good interviewer would take that as a cue to be more reserved and ask better questions. She just maintains her upbeat energy and continues to ask stupid questions that he doesn’t want to answer.

It's not an upbeat show. It's a PR show. And it's nice to see someone being normal and giving the questions the pitch they deserve. She needs to take it down a bit and not be condescending (ok, then tell us what you wearing). He answered Glass Onion question correctly, and she's asking him to be upbeat about that too. (I'm in Glass Onion for 3 seconds. Yeah, but you had fun, ryyyyyte?) Pipe down, be nice to everyone, even if they don't share your enthusiasm.

I know very little of fashion and really, the whole award ceremony thing, but this question gets thrown at every interview victim ever: What/who are you wearing. What difference does it make, it's a goddamn suit. Ask something relevant and thoughtful and you might just get something intelligent back into the conversation. As for Glass Onion, it was indeed something so short it must have been shot in a day or two, making the answer correct and honest.

As an English person, Hugh grants responses can be interpreted as a little dry and a little sarcastic. And as English folk we often feel comfortable in this day to day exchange as we get by, happy enough. What Americans and anyone else need understand is that we communicate very differently with one another but it is in no way considered malicious or intentionally rude this is simply a reflection of Hugh grant acting and likely feeling awkward in a likely awkward situation. Americans are definitely not fake in their social interaction but different. Just very different to us. We generally say "hi are you alright?" Which is the same as "hi how are you?" and I get confusion all the time with my overseas friends

Anyone who's giving Hugh Grant benefit of the doubt to the point of defending him, cannot seem to do so without putting the interviewer down, belittling her questions, demeaning her and her work even. Just like the $hithead their idol is. Now imagine if this was a male interviewer interviewing a female celebrity. And the exchange had remained the sane word for word.
