Hugh Jackman may not have the best voice of everyone whose ever sung this song, but for someone who hasn't been studying vocal music his entire life, he sings it very well. More importantly, his acting is spot-on, something that many others with a great deal of experience with vocal performance failed to do.

Maybe not the vocally polished version but his is the only version I've seen who actually seemed the understand the lyrics (his delivery of "dead right I've sold out", "I like the lady", and "I'm a writer", and the slight pause before "elegant solution" has convinced me that they should ALWAYS be done that way), and OMG he sure nailed that final note!

The acting here is so precise it's just amazing.. Nothing is too much, everything comes organically. My favourite performance, next to Michael Ball and Alan Campbell, Jackman is just such a good character actor.

Here's my feeling, he didn't do the most vocally impressive version of this song, but nobody has acted it better than him. He got everything so right. Barowmen was fine but a little flamboyant for the character.

i must say that Hugh's voice and singing fit the character better. i actually enjoy his singing. you wouldn't expect a character like this to be soft spoken and meek.

Wow, a lot of people don't seem to like his voice. In my opinion Hugh Jackman has a fantastic singing voice - a very unique sound. Amazing in The Boy From Oz, will always have a soft spot for him in Oklahoma and yes, not as good as Colm Wilkinson but I think he did a fantastic job in Les Mis.

what i love about hugh is that he can also do light and fluffy, i think the training he had for oklahoma really enabled him to hone his talents (his oh what a beautiful morning is magic and he is incredible in the boy from oz)

I must have watched this at least 30 times in the last day or so. I think the acting and vocals are perfect. Barrowman's version seems much too happy and cheerful. This version is great. Much more emotional than the others. Particularly "a rancid smell" and "I like the lady".

Well Barrowman makes this song into a cheesy showstopper by trying to show off his voice, whereas Jackman actually acts it and makes the sacrifice of sounding not as good as he could in order to retain the believability of the character. Jackman's performance is raw and realistic, I love it.

Hugh Jackman's performance of this song is the definitive. He may not have the smoothest and nicest voice, but who cares?! The acting is IMPECCABLE. The way he acted "And if I'm honest, I like the lady" is quintessential Joe Gillis.

My best friend and I totally agree. We love both Jackman and Barrowman and in comparing their performances we found indeed that John sings it better but Hugh acts it better. I prefer Hugh, she prefers John overall, but it shows what two great performers can do with the same song and part. Good observations.

Can I remind jealous/negative commenters that Hugh Jackman not to long ago won the award for best male lead on Broadway in the last decade. As for how he got the Les Mis lead, Cameron Mackintosh the creator of the show said to Tom Hooper if you can't get Hugh Jackam as Val Jean please don't do the film. Mackintosh also asked Jackman in 1997 to take the lead in the West End but Hugh turned it down at the time.

sunset boulevard is set to become a movie in 2009. no official actors to play the roles are announced, but they are considering glenn close, elaine paige, or barbara streisand for the role of norma desmond and ewan mcgregor or hugh jackman for the writer

I've seen both Hugh's and John's and I love Hugh's the most. My reason is, you can sound as preaty as you want, but it's the combination of acting and singing that realy sells me, speaking as a preformer. So after comparing the two I would much rather see Hugh Jackman play this part then John.

There's a documentary on youtube where there's a short clip of him performing this in the musical (this particular clip is from a tv program, I think) and in my opinion it's better. Cause he's moving around the stage, his singing's better.. when he's not just standing there singing into a mike, it makes a huge difference. Course, I didn't see this musical on stage and I imagine it's an entirely different experience than watching it on a computer.. for better or worse.

I watched both John Barrowman and Michael Ball after this clip. And I have to say that Jackman is my favorite. He puts much more emotion into than the others. They are both good, Barrowman to be me better than Ball. But Jackman is by far better. Rather than just singing the words he feels them and shows those emotions in his voice. It is spectacular.

Hugh Jackman would have been a perfect had this got round to being made as a movie. There is a tendency in recent years to cast Joe Gillies as a clean cut all American. But he isn’t that. he’s rough around the edges. Morally ambiguous, a little sleazy. William Holden played it perfectly and thats why Hugh and Kevin Anderson will always be the best at capturing Billy wilder’s Joe Gillies
