Just read Dan Barber's book and took it to heart. What you are doing DOES matter. Some of us care and want organic, nutritious, flavorful food. Our organic garden is being expanded this year. Have four blueberry bushes.

I agree with Hugh supporting good stewardship of the land is one of the main reasons some people buy organic food. I'm one of those people. Please don't give up!

Thank you. I liked the idea of a different label for the hydroponics/potted growing. It looks different than what I envisioned when I heard "hydroponic", however I agree that my gooseberry bush grown in a pot would become root bound very quickly and so I understand why this could be considered hydroponic after a couple of years. I'm not understanding a few points however. Hugh made the point that we'd bear the brunt of the external costs of these hydroponic systems. Does he mean the cost of producing would be higher than his growing? If so, why does that not give him a price advantage? Or is he meaning that it's bad for the land/water/air/wildlife/insects. I wish Hugh and his wife continued success, and thanks to them for caring for the wildlife and the land (old growth forests, wetlands, pine lands).

Sounds like the real problems are 1. Labeling 2. Distribution. I'm not sure what to do with the legal issues surrounding labeling, but as for distribution, we need someone to come up with a technological solution to this. Much like how Uber was able to decentralize the process of getting a taxi or Airbnb was able to bypass a lot of the hotel industry hurdles. Consumers are more and more shopping for groceries online. If there were a service that sold only real organic foods and had a super easy to use website or app and their own distribution system for delivering foods directly to consumers, that would bypass the "good old boys club" that controls grocery store supply chains now. I know what the difference between berries grown in soil vs grown hydroponically and sold at Krogers. The hydroponic ones are practically tasteless in comparison. And people do care about sustainability and taking care of the earth, which clearly hydroponic does not do. People will be on the side of real organic if the message gets out there.

So many people don't comprehend the concept of externalities. All of that plastic...sad!
