This song was posted before and had 515 views as of March 19th, 2010. I removed it and uploaded it once more in a better format to improve the quality of the video. The song was brought to my attention by my step-dad (Wayne) and I'd like to dedicate this slide show to him. I have been welcomed into their Colorado home for many years where I have had unlimited freedom in exploring the grandeur of the San Juan mountains of Colorado in and around Lake City. While I've not heard Salestrom sing in person, it's my understanding that he still performs in various parts of Colorado like the Broadmoor Hotel/resort in Colorado Springs. I like Salestrom's version the best of those I've heard online.

I had the wonderful pleasure of listening to Jim play this nightly when he and I worked together in Breckenridge in the early '90's. A terrific talent, a wonderful warm man and a great tune.

I stumbled upon this by accident, having previously heard of Hugh Prestwood songs but not this one; neither had I heard of Jim Salestrom. I love everything about this. The arrangement is so compelling, with the waltz tempo and the archaic harpsichord feel to the guitar. It's really special. I love it.

Love this version. Heard it at a funeral for my boyfriend's great aunt this weekend. We miss her so badly, but this fits her well. I want this for my funeral now. Such a beautiful song--what I think happens to us when we die. No afterlife, just nourishment for the next generations...more beautiful than any heaven I can think of.

Brought tears to my eyes. My father loved the White Mountains of California and took me there often while he was alive. We scattered his ashes in those mountains. Thank you.

Heard Mr. Salestrom sing this (and other songs) at the 1994 Folks Festival in Lyons, CO. The following year picked up the now long out of print "Folks Live!" CD of that festival. "Bristlecone Pine" is my favorite song from that CD and festival and Mr. Salestrom does a great rendition.

Love this song...I have never heard it before. It sure says a lot about life. The thought that you would return to the earth and find yourself part of this old but beautiful tree is, in some strange way, is very comforting. Thanks for posting it here for me to find.

it cuts like a knife......this is definition of masterful writing/presentation....sit your children down, let them listen/watch...expose them to perfection to protect them from low brow trash being served up by commercial mtv type smut peddlers.THIS type of music will teach them a bench mark...PEACE

Actually our heart is unfolding... and the bristlecone is an observant life form. It is hoping to witness, and record, our evolution.

This is one of the songs that kept me company in some confusing dark times! Over a year ago, a friend sent me this when we were playing songs for each other, and I fell in love w/ this immediately! It spoke to me in several ways simultaneously. Thanks merhlin :)

Loved this song the first time I heard it. I put seeing the tree on my bucket list then as I had never heard of the tree, or the song before. I surely hope to see it before I take up the rockin chair, or the dirt nap. Thank you.

Superb, thanks for setting this video to this gorgeous song I first heard years ago. This summer (2011) I learned for the first time that there are 2000+ year old bristlecones in Colorado; then found and visited some of them -- not trivial!

This is a *stunnng* video. I don't think the creator gets enough credit, really. For something of this power, this video should have 200,000 views by now. What's new, though? Was it that long-haired Palestinian that said, "Let the dead bury their own dead." ? I first saw Jim Salestrom sing this song in a park in Palisade, Colorado, 18 years ago and it was a spiritual experience. I am working on a video of his song "Grateful" and hope to have it posted here soon. Joy, -JSB

I would love my ashes unpolluted with formaldehyde, to be scattered in the mountains 'neath the Bristol Cone Pines. Be reborn in the West, and a simple natural life; happy, content, loved, and loving.

There is a tree named Methuselah -- At 4,841 years old, this ancient bristlecone pine is the oldest known... organism on Earth. Mathuselah was a character in the Bible who lived a very long life (900 years?)
