History of this song....Claude Ely, a songwriter and preacher from Virginia, describes composing the song while sick with tuberculosis in 1934 when he was twelve years old. His family prayed for his health, and in response he spontaneously performed this song. Originally recorded by Bozie Sturdivant in July 1942 (and released in 1943 as "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down") in a slower, African American gospel style and in 1946-7 by Sister Rosetta Tharpe with barrelhouse piano;[1] the song in Ely's version was recorded (and copyrighted) in 1953, even though he wrote it as early as 1935

I completely agree. Please try to find the original version written and performed by Brother Claude Ely. It's a bit different. He was a Pentecostal Preacher who was in a TB ward at the age of 12 (I think) when he wrote this song. Praise Jesus for being God's first fruits in the resurrection!

I never thought I’d have a funeral (always felt too close to the return of Jesus!!!) but if I do-it’s this song and Julie Miller’s “All My Tears (Be Washed Away) from the Orphans and Angels album ❤❤❤ I’m reading Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning; he’s talking about what kind of mindset enabled people to endure the concentration camps during the Holocaust. He says (and I agree) that if your suffering has meaning, you are enabled to endure it. These songs point to the meaning I stake my life on: Jesus loves me and gave Himself for me; and one day, because of His work on the cross-I will rise again and live with Him forever! I don’t want anyone to face life-and death-not knowing this same meaning of life!!!

Beautiful. I grew up in Harlan Ky. Claude Ely held revivals in our church. I was about 5 years old. He would give all of the kids a nickel. When I was older Mason Ely took over his ministry. He was a great man. I can still hear his powerful voice singing this song

Bother, the Apostle Paul felt the same way in Romans chapter 7-we hate what our flesh wants. But further reading into Romans chapter 8 we, those that are saved and under the blood of Christ we are not under the condemnation of sin. To proclaim victory over our temptations in sin continue to relish God’s word like it’s the only food source you only have-which it is. In Ephesians chapter 5 we are told to walk in the Word of God every waking moment. So carry on and keep the breast plate of Righteousness and helmet of salvation close your your heart.
