When building tones with the Grandmeister 36 amp I have found that the best place to start with eq. is turning the presence completely off and bass all the way up. Then add in mid and treble to taste. Very bright amps..at least the 36 is. I would like to try a Deluxe 40! cheers!

my experience is, that h&k divides guitarists. I'm a huge h&k fun and i tried many amps and finally I've got back to kettner. i like very much marshall, mesa, cornford and whatever else but h&k is killer for me.

Overall, fantastic coverage of the amp's abilities and it's uses. I would have had the amp settings differently though. The clean wasn't exactly clean and I know from experience that this amp can be MUCH cleaner than the test demoed. About the amp, I personally would have preferred a clean channel without gain, but that's just my style. All in all, great job Henning!
@Escapism71337 жыл бұрын
You're right that the H&K sounds similar to the AC30 on the clean channel but you had the bass knob rolled off quite a bit on the H&K during that comparison. I agree that the Vox probably handles pedals better but I think the H&K was at a disadvantage due to that bass roll off. Unless you changed the settings after 33:26 (the bass is set at 23%).

I have the HK 40 and the 11R. I have them in a 4 cable method currently and have worked with the 4cm extensively,. I am at the point where I am ready to split them and go back to A/B configuration feeling that this will give me more individual control over both devices and be less complicated when I have to grab one of these and go jam. I run a wet dry wet type scenario and the 11R main outs are superb for the wet on the outside. The HK with its mono out is in the "dry" / middle. I also have the red box to my RME 802 and Protools 2018, as well as a cab link from radial to another channel . Blending all this together over three PA systems sounds chilling. This video has prompted me to work more with the individual channels. I have a few pedals on my board, compressor, boost, pitch fork, tc quint, Wampler PEQ. Th pitch fx you can hear, the boost, optional. Compressor with mild settings, and the PEQ, very good pedal but the influence is almost indiscernible. I can hear it but I doubt the audience will be to tell. I run the output of the HK preamp through a compressor and an eq set flat, for gain with a cut on the bottom 4 and the top 4 on a 28 band. It tapers the high end and tightens the lows. I run the Protools / 11r on midi 1 and the HK on midi ch 2. Thought about combining and maybe even a Voodoo Control but decided to keep them separate. Too many control surfaces. If anyone is running a similar setup and wants to discuss please feel free to contact me.

From what I was seeing you do: 1) You mentioned "That's loud" indicating that the input to each amp AFTER you added the pedals was hotter. 2) The Delux 40 may already be driving the input hot, and if you add more 'hotness' (higher voltage) this may be the difference you don't like. 3) Until I see you put a voltmeter on these amps, and determine what voltage is too much for each, driving them into areas where they stop sounding good, will I then agree with you that "It can't handle pedals well" 4) All amps (as far as I know) have two inputs (1 & 2) and the second input is a lower voltage. I know this to be the case on Fender amps, as well as many others. If I were having problems of the pedals not sounding good, I would try each input. I would also adjust the gain of the channel to make sure I'm not overdriving the input too much. 5) Any reviewer who doesn't take the time to adjust anything, and concludes that it doesn't sound good? Really?

It sounded to me like you had the bright clean boost on the Grandmeister deluxe 40 when you were doing the pedal into different amp comparisons. Was this the case? I think that if you did it makes it way brighter sounding, and that might not be a good thing for it being good amp for foot pedal enthusiast. Did the other amps you were testing have a bright clean boost enabled? I haven't done much playing a round running pedals into my Coreblade, which is a different amp, but the H&K sound was still there with the tubes they use In the Coreblade. I'm also wondering were you using the Cab designed for the Grandmeister Deluxe. I think this makes a big difference since H&K are pretty bright amps tonally. I never bought the originally 4x12 for my Coreblade so i can't say if that would of made a difference, but I did have to find a different combination of tubes to use with the cab, and speaker combination to smooth out the brightness, and add a little bass. My amp sounds much better now that i found a good tube combination compared to what it originally came with.

I'm planning on getting a synergy system now but a few years ago . I went to a guitar shop planning on buying a grandmeister and they also had a blackspirit 200 . I tried them both and end up going with the bs200 . I thought the bs sounded better and is easier to wok with . But the look of the grandmeister defiantly has the cool factor going on with the over all look. But even though it don't have tubes I think the bs200 is the better head .

I'm not sure about your assessment about the pedals. I have had this amp for several years. I don't use the amp's effects I use the footswitch with pedals. They all sound awesome so I'm not sure how your pedals didn't work well... I use a tube screamer on the clean lead and ultra channels. That pushes the lead and ultra channel forward in the midrange and kills most that low end! Give it a try!!!! This post just now came up on my feed.

There are 10.000s of pedals out there. It's a bit harsh saying "it's not a pedal amp" when you demo it with ONE overdrive. But OK, you can say it does not take low gain overdrive well. What about distortion? Or modulation, or fuzz, or wah or octave... pedals? You see my point: you cannot say it's not good for pedals. Probably not good for some pedals, but you should not use such strong words as verdict.

I tried other pedals like the rat or my Vox Wah and I was disappointed. Oh, yes - tuners also work well. I used Hughes and Kettner amps in the 90ies, than Mesa Boogie and later Marshalls. I bought the Grandmeister 40 last year and I really love it.

Mi Pe honestly it’s not a good pedal platform amp. Is it a good amp? Yes, indeed but not a pedal platform amp. Maybe you own the amp and you take offense to this but I’m sorry it’s the truth but don’t ignore the facts and truth. I’m sorry you live in denial. Next time choose a better pedal platform amp and preferably the best clean channel you can afford and more wattage for more headroom. I have a PRS Archon 100 - perfect pedal platform with amazing clean channel. I seriously don’t think you understand playing/guitar/amps/pedals much and you certainly don’t understand what makes an amp a great pedal platform amp. Possibly you bought what you have without understanding, which happens and sometimes takes some of us years to find thee amp. Btw,,,,,,,,,, almost any amp can play well with distortion, overdrive and fuzz but this doesn’t make it a good pedal platform amp. You sound very immature and high school like education when it comes to this stuff. You posted 2 years ago this immature comment so hopefully you’ve grown up by now and learned more. I’m sure those who gave you a “Like” or thumbs up for your comment probably own this very amp or don’t understand just as yourself. Again drop the “know it all” attitude like most millennials which you probably are (not judging, just based off your ass hurt comment you posted) and do your research. And don’t take word for word every forum post on the internet on someone else’s opinion or what they think is correct/right, do your own actual research. Imbecile

I found you were a little bit unfair on this one. I already noticed that these beautiful Berumen pups added a tiny fuzziness on other demos. For me, GM36 is a great sounding amp and takes pedals relatively well, especially compared to a VOX AC which is well known for being a bad pedal platform. That's why generations of users modded it. Search tonecap mod on the web... Great demo anyway... You're awesome...
@EytschPi427 жыл бұрын
Boris Hebert hey Boris... I have to disagree.... in a direct A/B comparison it is obvious that most other amps sound better with a pedal than the H&K... that A/B comparison can't be made in most stores because you really have to switch back and forth. The AC30 takes pedals really well in my opinion and definitely trumps the H&K... the Grandmeister offers a lot for the money, but it is a bad choice as a pedal amp.
@jeromesnail7 жыл бұрын
EytschPi42 sorry but you didn't even TRY to set up the amp correctly... I love your reviews but I'm with Boris on this one, really unfair conclusion.
@borishebert78607 жыл бұрын
If you tell it... in my opinion, what makes it a great pedal platform is the programability... On a normal amp you set your clean tone perfectly and then you try to engage your drive pedals or other effect but, more often, you'll have to scoop the mids or add bass on the amp to really find the sweet spot. Here, you can handle this problem easily, making a second preset perfect for your pedal. And with a looper-switcher midi capable and well configured, you only need to tap one switch. I personally found this GM a bargain.
@EytschPi427 жыл бұрын
Sorry man, but I have been using this amp since January... I have been using it in many demos, switching to it many times... I have direct comparisons to other amps around it and it just doesn't handle pedals well. You can try to set it up any way you want. The bass drops out compared to other amps... there is no way to dial in more. It also tends to distort a pedal more than other amps. It makes drives quite fizzy as well. But that is not a big deal since the whole idea of this amp is to be an in the box solution with everything built in... if you are looking for a pedal amp, you gotta go somewhere else.
@jeromesnail7 жыл бұрын
EytschPi42 I'll take your word on that, but still I think you should have made the comparison with proper clean channel settings to make your point clearer ;)

@zoltanmartel1937 жыл бұрын
100% agree with the conclusion. I've used Hughes and Kettner amps for years for cover band work, just because of that functionality. It's what they do best. They also facilitate live performance because of where they sit in frequency response and directness. I prefer other amps for my own creations though. And I agree that musicians in such bands should get a Hughes and Kettner before seeking a digital modelling/convolution solution, but not because those are evil (Kemper has stolen a lot less than Apple for instance, who stole there entire operating system from BSD, hey, the digital industry is meretricious by nature, welcome to the digital age where everything is fake and adult content and copyright infringing sells the most bandwidth...), but because they make you a less good musician, they take away your focus and inhibit the artistic nature of the performance. If you look at the music industry, the musical instrument industry, etc... through the eyes of the artist, it's really hard not to find everything evil, but then that's why you're an artist, the very moment you made the choice to become an artist, that's when you elevated yourself to the intellectual elite who's always going to struggle and be exploited by the hordes of opportunistic snake oil salesmen who are going to degrade you, and abuse your creation to sell consumers the dream of being an artist. Any artist with experience in performing his/her work to an audience, knows how precarious that is. You have to expose your soul every single time, but you play for yourself, you get in your creative zone where there are no boundaries, all you can do is share yourself with the audience while doing that. The added value of that is so high, that none of the petty salesmen could even calculate the price that should be paid for that service. That is why artists are the intellectual elite, why they are not forgotten but enrich humanity going forward, while the petty salesmen are forgotten. The price artists pay for that privilege to enrich mankind is very high, it was always very high and it will always be very high. And I fully agree that part of the task of the intellectual elite is to make people think about what's real and what isn't, about what is consumption and what is creation. And I really appreciate that you take that to heart, it's a constant throughout the content I've seen from you.

soundwise the engl ironball might to take the cake for a great affordable portable amp''i'm a biased engl fan tough XD'' but you can get great sounds out of a grandmeister 36 or a 40, just the sweet spots are in diffrent places. The pressence on the granmeisters is in the midhigh area so cranking it up a bit to cut throught wouldn't hurt. the meisters can sound a little dimed compared to the bigger amps and the fexibility of tweaking sound on the spot is a bit of a thing. i have the grandmeister 36 and am pretty okay with it at the moment. Had a ironbal but the ironball didn't ''quite'' cut it, those 20 wats get lost with a high cealing gig when unmiced and the fact that the fx isn't switchable with the footswitches bothered me, i still kinda love it's sound tough.

I just got one (a Grandmeister) myself after a lot of looking around. It's the only amp that fit all of the checkboxes I was looking for: tube, 4 channels for clean, crunch, distortion and lead sounds, built in direct recording output, noise gate, and delay. The only other option I saw was the Revv G20 which is coming out this month. The G20 sounds great from what I've heard, although it took a bit to find demos that were not only metal, it does some amazing clean and crunch tones too. It does not have any built in effects though, and only 2 channels, but it does have a built in Torpedo cab simulator, but no effects. If you don't need all of the extra features, there are a lot of great amps out there. I agree with Eytsch that there are amps that can do better, but usually it's on one or two tones, and few have 4 channels, most 2, some 3. That's not saying that they won't all do a clean, mild crunch, heavy rock sound and lead, but you have to redial sounds or use external pedals. It really comes down to workflow and flexibility.

Good, informative review. Thank you. From my perspective, a band that plays in Sweden travels with Kemper Amps of course like any other clever touring band in the world does. That means a band is travelling with their own sounds, profiled from their guitar amps . . or someone else's hehe, in a lightweight package. They doing this to avoid playing with shitty rental amps like in the old days. So why travel with some half assed sounding compromise as suggested in the video if every serious player can have Christoph Kemper's answer to all guitar amp related problems when it comes to guitarists on tour or playing gigs.

Question for anyone who cares to comment.... How does this all in one tube amp compare to something like a Tech 21 Paul Landers Fly Rig which is also designed to be an all in one unit in pedal form?

Do you think if you run a pedal through the loop it won't be as compressed?
@EytschPi427 жыл бұрын
the loop is fine... for delays and reverbs, but as far as drives go, they have to be in front of the amp, unless you have a preamp type pedal.

What a killer video great job ! Nice dialing in. That amp just rips. The effects are lush. The options are excellent. How does it feel cranked up ? Especially in a live situation... The mean channel reminds me of a diezel type tone must be the German vibe .

Great video. When I switch from the Ultra channel to the Clean channel, it makes a loud popping sound, not just a click. Only from Ultra to Clean. Does anyone else have this issue? Trying to figure out why or if this is normal for this amp. Thanks
@BOUZOUKISIGNIS5 жыл бұрын
I think it's the noise gate. Deactive it in both channels and try again.
@willman1005 жыл бұрын
BOUZOUKISIGNIS Thanks for the advice. I tried it with the noise gate disabled on both channels, but the same issue. I contacted H&K support. They said it was designed that way, and is normal. They said it’s only noticeable when the amp is at bedroom levels, and would not be noticeable at a band set volume. Still curious if others have this issue.

If you want my money: Give me a Grandmeister 50 with the potis of a Behringer V-Amp Pro (readable positions), the sound of a Framus Dragon (breathes fire where the H&K is just coughing), without the "illuminate my fingerprints"-design (make poti section matte black), with a well organized online sound library and a windows editor and space for own cab impulse responses in the red box. Just do it. That would be the end of compromises.

Again thanks Henning and, of course, the switch witch 😍 I'd buy this immediately but there is an absofuckinglutely no go: App only for iPad! So there is an app for a device with a market share between 10-20 % worldwide which means 80 to 90 % of all potential buyers can't use all the features it brings with it by using the app. For me this is an epic fail! I know there were latency problems earlier with Android devices but that's not the case anymore. Plus you don't need low latency while setting up your presets and store them. For an amp at this price range it's kind of ridiculous. Even my 267 Euro Spark Amp can do better (40+ Euro for tax btw.). On the other hand it's so versatile that it's almost a must have and also a bargain with all the decent effects built in. Eierlegende Wollmilchsau halt 😁 I'm not 100 % convinced yet, but it's on my wish list \o/

Apple is the standard for music production though so that market share divide is prolly is way bigger among musicians
@adrianojameson6294 жыл бұрын
@@lo3572 I'm not talking about music production but simply setting up an amp. And here it fails :-) Not every player is a producer, so I don't gaf what the standard for music production is, I don't waste a shitload of money for new devices I don't need but setting up an amp. Let me quote my essential phrase again: "So there is an app for a device with a market share between 10-20 % worldwide which means 80 to 90 % of all potential buyers can't use all the features it brings with it by using the app:". I can't see anything regarding music production in this sentence. Or simplified: If I buy this, I can't use it at full range if I don't own Apple stuff. That is the point, nothing more, nothing less.
@lo35724 жыл бұрын
Adriano Jameson I think you can set it up just using the knobs though. I have a Switchblade & it has no app. I guess it’s easier to guarantee the quality of the app with only 1 OS

@aquariusdawning3 жыл бұрын
@@jameslaurent6491 I did actually. I have the foot board and the WiFi adapter running into my iPad and everything running through a Focusrite interface into an iMAC. It doesn't seem to like pedals very much but between the amp itself, the ipad presets and LogicPro, effects aren't too much of an issue so I haven't tried real hard to make my pedals work. It does well with a wah wah pedal though. Very well. Currently my WiFi isn't cooperating though. I need to troubleshoot that but I just bought a nice Taylor acoustic so I haven't really played anything electric in a few months.

Such a great feature demo, but such an awful tone demo. So, the other amps that sounded like garbage with the external drive pedal are also not worthy. Nothing sounded good with that pedal. My 8" toy Marshall sounds better with its 9V battery. -The drive pedal doesn't have knobs to adjust to different amps? -Only one drive pedal? -Only one guitar to test it with? It sounded like garbage. -How about a Strat, or something besides a LP sounding metal guitar. Watch Rabea's and Devin's videos to see what it can do. Rabea can play clean too. It is a great amp tonally, it does not have to be a Marshall or a Mesa ... it is an H&K ...
