The die with no thermal paste on it is the chipset. Chipsets do get warm, but no where near as hot as the CPU itself, so manufacturers like to cheap out and not bother with thermal paste. In some laptop designs, the chipset is on the same substrate as the CPU, like in these MacBooks, which could make you think that it’s part of jt. Chipsets usually require little to no cooling. Sometimes there will be no cooling. Sometimes there will be no cooling with a bare die, and sometimes there will be minimal passive cooling with a small heatsink, similar to these MacBooks. In a few edge cases, like with AMD’s X570, the chipset requires active cooling with a small fan. You did nothing wrong putting thermal paste on the chipset, I just wanted to clear up the confusion about it.
@yevoidstar4 жыл бұрын
They don't "cheap out" it's because the chipset can't physically support the temperatures that the CPU will get (and transfer to it if thermal paste is applied), hence some manufacturers even make the heat pipe recessed for the side covering the PCH
@neongooroo4 жыл бұрын
Cheap out on literally cents that thermal paste is worth? What else, the Earth is flat?

NeonGooRoo Apple sells like 20 million macs a year, and have sold 240 million computers from 2002 until now. If they saved 1 cent on each computer because of the thermal paste, then they've saved $2.4m. Which doesn't sound like a lot for a trillion dollar company, but still.

A lot of IT departments are phenomenally bad at asset management. A lot of corporations will get a pallet of new systems and 3-5 years later when the warranty drops or they're not shiny anymore will just throw them out. I work for an MSP and I've had to stop so many companies from literally just tossing stacks of perfectly working 3 year old laptops in the dumpster because they aren't shiny anymore and the executives want something new. Not even taking them to the e-recycler just into the city garbage. And e-waste companies that don't let the public look through inventory before they chop it up and ship it to China are a huge enabler of this problem. Intel hasn't significantly advanced their processors in the last 4-6 years or so and even almost decade old systems still run Windows 10 like a champ with an SSD. And yet literal cargo ship loads of totally good still very powerful and useful less than 5 year old systems get trashed and destroyed every day. These often aren't 8 year old beat up Celeron systems with a swollen battery and a dead display either. We're talking capable executive workstations with color accurate displays and discreet graphics and powerful processors. I once only barely stopped a client from dumping a stack of 8 totally working Precision 7520s some with 120hz display, most with 16gb+ of ram, all with i7s, most with SSDs into a dumpster because they had lost the chargers they came with.

A lot of people seem to be shaming the girls for their usage of their laptops, but I've honestly seen some laptops in much worse conditions with some of my friends. I used to use the exact same model (Early-2014 MacbookAir) and here are some of the issues I had with it as well: 1. Denting is to be expected in a student environment, even if you have a really nice cover, a slight nudge too much on the side of the table can cause a dent, something you won't get on Thinkpads for ex. 2. Screws come out by themselves after 2+ years. If you're area has 3rd party companies that provide them, great. If not, don't bother going to Apple's genius bar for such a minor issue because they will overcharge that + a simple internal cleanup. 3. My battery went after 2+ years as well and had to replace it in Dec 2016. I expected that since I played CPU intensive games on it during that time like CS:GO and Cities: Skylines. Cost about $150USD to replace. However battery went again in 2019 but I didn't bother replacing it since I mostly used it at home by that point. It's common to hear middle-school private school children to spill liquid on their macs as well. Though I haven't heard of such issue with High-School and older users. Overall, I'd think it was a waste that the school almost decided to throw these out as a lot of these parts can be recycled/re-purposed as they still have their worth. However, I wouldn't bother repairing them and giving them to other people as repairing them cost an insane amount (few 100 at least) and there are cheaper, newer and faster budget alternatives on the market. It made sense to buy MacOS in 2014, but with Windows 10 now it makes no sense to the normal consumer.

how did you kill the battery that fast mine has over 1000 charge cycles and is 5 years old still lasts about 2 hours on light usage

Cheap chromebook with touch screen will only set you back 200 bucks depending on where you get them. Cheap low end windows OS will set you back the same. All perfectly good computer. Mac books are just over priced computers.

@@kameljoe21 Ya I love Apple software but the money and overheating issues not being able to upgrade the laptop yourself just turns me away.

3 schools in my area I get PCs from every 10 years on tap its great worst case I part them out and make money or I sell the ones that work right away sell them as I work on the ones that are not working. this was so satisfying to watch, love how you put Linux on the 3 problem laptops I would do the same.

@@supersop1367 they are on eBay and Amazon, they aren’t trash, you can use them for daily tasks easily + you can install any os on them. just cause they’re 6-7 years old doesn’t mean they’re bad.
